okay, well, I'm not really healthy and it sucks. I'm not saying I'm fat because I know I'm not, just I want to live a healthier life style. The thing is, my mom is sort of...fat, so things around the house aren't that healthy and I was never raised to be active.
So, I want to try to get healthier over the summer. Thing is, I don't want to have to run outside in 90-100 degree weather (I live in Texas). So, do you guys know what I can do that will help me lose some weight and get healthier. Something that I could slowly progress into perhaps. I'm concentrating more on my lower body (calfs, abs, thighs) Plus what kind of foods should I eat... without going on a drastic diet that is? Any help from here would be nice. |

If you want to avoide the heat, go outside early in the morning (like around 6-8). If you don't want to run, you could always join a swim team. There, you would be motivated by teammates to try your hardest and it'll be a good workout everyday.
For the food part, get into the habit of reading food labels. If the first ingredient is sugar, avoid it! Follow the food pyramid, stay away from greasy, fatty foods. Eat salads, fruits, and stuff. |

Go vegetarian. Its easier than it seems. Morningstar Farms provides frozen chicken patties and nuggets made from soy and you can't tell the difference. If you barbeque a blackbean burger, its just as good as the real thing.
Excercise. Don't go crazy but get on a consistent routine 3-4 times a week for at least 40 minutes and eat 3 meals a day but make sure they're healthy. You can eat a full me, but lay off the fats. |

what's wrong with 90-100 degrees? personally when it's that weather i'm running outside like mad with a sweater on, but anywho, if you don't want to go outside, do the regular crunches/squats/whatevers and do a lot of cardio.

actually if you even walk in the heat you will burn a lot of calories. Heat makes you sweat, sweating makes you burn calories.
Try to eat mostly organic foods. Go vegetarian if you like. Join a swim team. Good luck! |

Go swimming. Swimming is one of the best workouts for your body. It works a lot of muscle groups, burns a lot of calories, and doesn't require hitting a hard surface repeatedly (like running does).

^ Jason, that is unneeded.
Anyhoo, I joined a gym, and I'm really starting to get into it. Try to convince your mom to buy healthier foods for you and let you join a gym. If your gym offers it and your mom can afford it, they can offer you a personal trainer. They work wonders. Hope that helped! |

You could probably purchase a treadmill, stay at home and jog/run on the treadmill, and avoid the heat by turning on the air conditioner or using an electric fan.

QUOTE(sk8ter4life750 @ Jun 28 2005, 1:25 AM) Actually, that's a really good idea. You won't lose weight with lifting--in fact, often times you will gain wait, because muscle weights more than fat--but you'll most likely be thinner, and having more muscle mass means your body uses more calories to maintain that muscle mass, so you won't have as much energy being stored as fat. |

Be more assertive about your approach to making a healthy lifestyle for yourself. If you want to eat healthy, go grocery shopping with your mom/dad and convince them to buy more healthy food, and then help with the cooking, and cook stuff that's healthy. Do some strength training stuff, lift books, and boxes. Also, you can do power walking in a mall, you don't have to run outside.

Swim, because it helps...A LOT. Advantages:
1. Grow taller 2. Get muscles 3. Get toned I used to swim three hours a day, wow. Now I wish I never stopped, because swimming kept me in really good shape. |

I live in Texas too. What I do is some basic stuff at the house. Situps and stuff. Then I just walk a lot either early in the morning or late in the evening (its been taking a long time to get dark so a little more time to walk) (and if you want you could run). Make sure you keep a bottle of water with you out in this heat though.
