When it's over

I'm only 17, but time shoots by so quick,
I watch the hours pass, and hear the seconds tick.
It could be tomorrow, it could be next week, or even 50 years,
And when it's over, that fateful day, will someone shed their tears?

What about the mark I leave when my time on Earth is done,
Will I leave my children, will the third World War be won?
These questions are so angry, so terrifyingly real,
And sad, but true, we face the fact that they hold so much appeal.

It must be our avidity for where we are, and where we're going,
Our animal desire to be in constant knowing.
One sunny day, your inflexible path will indefinitely be crushed,
And when it's over you'll be left in penance at how your life was rushed.

Carpe' diem, sieze the day, clutch it in your grip,
Hold it sacred, your top priority, and never let it slip.
For the day lasts 24 hours, the week 168, 8,765 in a year,
And the day your screen goes black is drawing very near.

In your time, cherish life, and enjoy the gift of fun,
So you can say you've done it all, when it's all said and done.

-- Me, 8.01.04.

Thought I'd share it with you all.
