should we make the lounge an unmoderated forum?

I do get tired of threads being closed because they are too long, or because there is some thread, somewhere, buried deep in the annals of the forum, that covered the same topic a year and a half ago.

I also get tired of every thread having to have a "point". There are so many threads were a person posts something interesting but, out of necessity, has to end it with a dumb question like "Has this ever happened to you?" And then no one discusses the original point--everyone just posts their own anecdotes. Sometimes I just feel like posting an observation about my own life or experiences without feeling the need to elicit a similar observation from others--it's perfectly acceptable to post something, not ask a question per se, and just let discussion flow.

I do think some moderating needs to be done--moving topics to more appropriate places, closing inappropriate topics, even closing threads that are clearly duplicates of recent topics. Also, sometimes people need to be nudged back on topic--for instance, if there's a thread about a specific topic, and someone comes in and starts posting something clearly irrelevant to the discussion, it does ruin the discussion for everyone else.

In general, I think a good rule of thumb would be for The Lounge to promote general discussion, and any moderating should seek to achieve that end. I think The Lounge would be much cooler if there were actual discussions, rather than an poster simply asking a basic question and a bunch of people responding to it. In other words, threads should utilize active listening and talking, rather than passive discussion. I think any moderating actions should seek to achieve that goal.

Plus, sometimes going off-task helps us learn more about each other. People on cB are so locked into sticking to the topic expressed in the first post of the thread, that it becomes very hard to truly learn something about each other.

I think that there should be a mod. Mods help run things.

Hmmm...what happens if there's a longstanding topic on the first page and then someone makes like, the same topic, cause they just didn't look?...Can we still merge them?

i think they should be able to close some, just not good, older topics. because if there was no closing at all people would post obscene things that dont follow the rules.

I like the idea. It should be more fun. If not revoking the ability, at least have the staff be more lenient on what should be closed and what shouldn't. A lot of the other forums probably need more moderating, and the staff should focus more on them, if that helps the considerations any.

oh honestly woman, you'll just use your judgement, oviously. no one is suggesting we abandon all guidelines and jump straight to anarchy, are they?

there wont be a written protocol for every possible eventuality, will there? you'll still have the power to moderate when necessary, all he's suggesting is that the mods chill!

there should be a new forum section called "junk". mods can only move, they can't close. so they can move the topic that they would normally close into "junk". it can be discussed in the junk forum or whatever whether or not the topic should be moved back into lounge.

seriously, i've thought about making so many topics but i havent because i didnt want about ten mods on my ass talking about how there's a topic back in sept 04 that's the same. and when i find that topic, i dont wanna post in it because it would be closed for bringing shit back. seriously, either the mods need to chill out or this non-moderated thing should happen. plus, what, you think we're all gonna go psycho when we realize you can't close our topics? someone determined to spam is going to spam, regardless of whether or not their topic is going to be closed or not.

EDIT: scratch all of that, i just read the whole second page of the thread. WOOT. YES. GO MICRON. WOOT.

my idea of an unmoderated lounge (which would be great)

- NO ADVERTISEMENT and SCAM
- No buy/sell/trade
- Respect other members
- No religious/political discussion

only rules that should apply

mellow.gif They all do, minus the last one, but usually those topics go in the debate forum.

Nooo. mellow.gif We need the ability to close topics...it's not necessarily bad all the time, but...we definitely need that.

Just tell mods to be more lenient on closing topics that have been dead for a year. I know I like to make my own topics if the topics have been gone forever, so I would definitely follow that suggestion.

i agree about that, but maybe you should only close spam topics such as go to (insert link here) so i can get my free ipod! and duplicate topics that aren't over a year old.

i know they do. however, there are a bunch of other rules that are applied that try to turn this forum into being nice and a "everyone loves each other" forum. the mods act really anal about anything that violates their extra rules. im just saying that only the bare essentials are needed, nothing else.

if a topic isnt worth having, it will die by itself.

i find it ironic that we have the rule "No one word replies, in that case no short posts such as "i don't know", "cool", "nice" and etc. " yet replying with just one smiley is considered ok.....

It isn't... mellow.gif It's considered spam as well. If it's not in the guidelines, then I'll add it in.

if you read the entire thread, it was not proposed that the power to close threads which violate community guidelines, e.g. in terms of inappropriate content be taken away from teh mods, so that argument is irrelvant.

and how on earth is deleting dead threads a different solution fom just closing them?
Sorry, but I'm not going to study this entire thread like it's a homework assignment.

Maybe the topic starter could have been more specific in the title so people wouldn't keep posting these replies that seem to upset you so.

And..it IS a different solution. Maybe not a good one, but it's definitely different.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the argument that the mods should just delete old topics, because it's true, they could be used for reference. But I don't think they should close them, that's for sure. The bumper could have had something new to say, new to offer, which could bring up more fresh discussion. Like Mipadi said, why do we have to stick DIRECTLY to the topic the whole time? That's boring. I could understand the moderator closing a dead thread if the bumper said basically the same thing as all the previous posters. But even so, why does the date of a thread have to carry so much importance? It's still a thread.

But really, why does everything here have to be so freaking STRUCTURED? I mean, don't get me wrong. I love cB. But c'mon, it's a MESSAGE BOARD. Chill out people.

Yes, we do need to be moderated. Someone might just post a bash topic, or might show porn. Those must mustt be closed. However, topics shouldn't be closed just because it was talked about before. Nobody wants to have to read a year old topic, and then find out that the situation has completley changed in those x amount of years.

But some topics have to be closed, it shouldn't go completely unmonitored.

The Lounge. Have a laugh, make new friends. Anything off-topic.

What happened to that? The rules seem to be very strict, and sometimes I just wanna post to say, "My foots asleep. Don't you hate that?" or "I just wanna hide under the covers". Things like his "I just wanna fly" post...

how do you intend to contribute anything worthwhile without knowing what has gone before, without being tedious and repetitive? how specific do you think it is possible to be in a thread title? the arguments dont upset me, the needless repetition of itrrelevant points of concern irks me, its tiresome and unneccessary
