Since the Apple operating systems have been gaining popularity after... the whole "Windows is hax0rable" thing... and the new G5 system came out, more hackers will be targeting the system and trying to exploit it. Of course... it'll be harder, but like you said, there are companies that have been able to do it, someone else will also be able to do it. Nothings safe, unless it's unknown...

Like they say, the best antivirus/firewall is to have a internet connection that doesnt work... or not have one at all. =)

A lot of people tend to assert that, but there's little evidence to back up such a claim. There are more security precautions inherent in the operating system that there are in Windows. I'm sure more exploits would be found in Macs, if they were more popular, but I doubt there'd be as many or as widespread vulnerabilities as in Windows.

but you must admit- it is partly because of the smaller target that there aren't that any viruses around for OS X.

the move to intel processors could also open up things that apple doesn't expect... (yea, i'm just speculating.

Oh, yes, it's partly due to the fact that it is a smaller target. But it's a stretch to say that if OS X was as popular as Windows, it would be just as exploitable. But yes, the obscurity of the OS is certainly a factor in its security.

I don't think the move to Intel will cause a lot of problems in this regard, however. The actual processor has little to do with the security of a system, and since OS X operates the same whether it is on the PowerPC or Intel procs, there shouldn't be much of a change. The only thing that might result is an increased popularity of OS X, which could result in more exploits.

I dought the switch from PowerPC to Intel will spark a gain in popularity.

i think the opposite.

most people i know would love to try OSX, it's just that they don't have the hardware for it. once companies sell it as the default OS, it's going to pick up.

An interesting point, and one with which I agree. I think a lot of people would like to at least try out Mac OS X, but can't afford the hardware necessary to run in (a plight I with which I can identify). However, if a user could run OS X on their existing PC hardware, I think a lot of people would switch to OS X, or at least dual-boot Windows and OS X.

One problem, though: Apple has officially stated that OS X will run only on Intel-branded Macintoshes, not commodity PC hardware.

However, there are some signs that point to the fact that Apple may not be serious about this claim. One is the fact that in a month or so, Apple is shipping an Intel-based PowerMac to developers, along with a copy of Mac OS X 10.4.1 for x86. There are several key points regarding this fact:
  1. It is expected that Apple will use Intel's upcoming LaGrande to keep OS X from running on non-Apple machines. However, that technology is not readily available yet, so the developer release of OS X 10.4.1 for Intel will not have such technology, which means it will probably run on commodity PC hardware.
  2. Most releases of OS X, especially developer's copies, are quickly pirated and distributed in P2P programs, especially BitTorrent.
  3. Apple's executive's undoubtedly know this.
Given those facts, it seems that Apple is not taking many steps to prevent such an eventuality. Now, naturally, the developer's release is not upgradeable, and won't work far into the future; but it will give users a taste of what it would be like for OS X to run on their existing PC. I personally think this is because Apple plans to get out of the hardware business (or at least reduce to dependence on high-margin hardware sales) and focus on two things: the iPod/iTunes, and Mac OS X. I think eventually you will see OS X released for commodity PC hardware.

Anyway, that's my $0.02.

Apple is officially allowing Windows XP to run on Intel-based Macs! With their Boot Camp software (currently in public beta but an official part of Mac OS X 10.5), one can easily create partitions for dual-booting Windows XP and Mac OS X. One can also run the BIOS-based XP on the EFI-based Intel Macs.

Well, if you've never used a Mac before, how do you know that Windows is way easier to learn? tongue.gif

iMovie is gOd.

But Windows is where the home is for me.

I'd like to try Linux. I might do that once I get a new computer.

That's not to say that computers not running Windows are not powerhouses. In fact, in the last supercomputer ranking, most of the 500 most powerful machines in the world ran Linux.[1] And even on desktop operating systems, computers not running Windows are fairly powerful.

I don't really like Linux for desktop machines. It lacks support for a lot of key things, especially multimedia. Even setting up a DVD drive is a pain in the ass on Linux, since almost no Linux distributions come with the software for DVD playback (since it's not free software).
