QUOTE
The Refurb Angle Consumers have also complained that if you send your iPod to Apple for a new battery, the company would often send back refurbished or repaired iPods instead of the original unit. Again, Apple representatives do not deny this. The company will use refurbished or repaired units, but always give you a "fresh" battery. If you've personalized the chrome back of your iPod, Apple will make sure that the replacement iPod has the same personalization. I was kind of surprised that the company admits doing this, but representatives insist that giving customers repaired or refurbished parts is a common practice for hardware manufacturers.

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_...934376#continue

I find that surprising because like...it's Apple. And Apple is really expensive, I always thought they would just give you a new iPod if you sent it in for battery replacement.

And it also said:

QUOTE
There are also complaints that there's no way for consumers to know about this refurb-switch policy because the practice is only noted in very tiny print on the Apple site.

QUOTE
...Apple now offers a comprehensive iPod Battery area on its site, and it's noted in standard-sized type that "Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $99, plus $6.95 shipping". It does say "replace your iPod." But neither this page nor others (like the guide to iPod battery replacement) that I scanned on Apple's site mentions that you might receive a refurbished or repaired iPod.

I never knew Apple was so sneaky. pinch.gif

They really aren't that "sneaky." Granted, this wasn't a very known issue when the 1st and 2nd generation iPods were out, but after that, Apple made the battery issue known.

My 3rd generation iPod could benefit from this court case if I could just find my damned receipt.

They only replace the battery, not the iPod itself.

I think they replace the whole iPod, because the form factor of the iPod is not really designed to be opened easily.

They probably keep a record of what iPods you returned, and either register your replacement iPod for you, or tell you to register again.

Well, if you already registered your iPod on your computer, it wouldn't matter, you would just keep transferring songs like you usually did.

no you do not have to pay

QUOTE
Your one year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your warranty to two years with AppleCare. During the second year, Apple will replace the battery if it drops below 50% of its original capacity. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery replacement for $99. Apple disposes your battery in an environmentally-friendly manner.

"IF it is out of warranty" that is what people dont get, get the icare thing and save your self 40 on gettting a a new battary when it dies

But there are places which replace the battery for much cheaper then the Apple site.

..I think the Apple people really know how to make money. I mean, they have the MP3 player for $200-$300+, then you have to buy the songs for the MP3 player that you just bought, at iTunes for .99 per song, then if you wanna replace the battery, you have to send it to the Apple Store for $100. Wow.

Yeah, this is pretty old.
It used to be 255 dollars to replace it.

Basically I think Apple is greedy as hell with the iPod.

That is by far the stupidest thing I've ever seen(and it clearly shows your ignorance), because as it's not true.

You CAN get kits to replace your iPod battery, but why void the warranty and take the risk of damaging your iPod? Apple ranks highest in their customer service. If you have problems, and you're still under their warranty, walk into any Apple store, have them take a look at it, and they'll replace it(granted it's damaged, of course) with, yes, a refurbished iPod. The first post is right, a lot of companies do replace their products with refurbished items. Digital cameras are one example... you just have to read the fine print everywhere else.

+ You're stupid to think that a rechargeable battery will last forever. The battery depends on how you use it, meaning how many charges you put it through, how many times you fool around with your iPod, etc etc. It's like a freaking cellphone battery, eventually its life will begin to decrease over time.

Anyway, get your facts straight. iPods are covered under a year warranty, within that time you may have your iPod replaced if it encounters any battery problems, free of charge. After the year is up, you may have it replaced for $99. The AppleCare Protection Plan offers an extra year after the original warranty for $59. Beats having to pay $99 for a battery replacement.

I may sound like I'm tainted, considering where I work, but people just straight out accuse and hate due to their own ignorance. If you know the facts and disagree, then fine, don't buy an iPod, but don't start hating because of your assumptions.

Yes, but that's illegal. xP
Singingfish.com doesn't have recent music, and it would still be illegal anyway, because it's music sharing. And you might as well just get a CD player if you're gonna import CDs. And I wasn't implying myself, though there are still millions of people who buy songs from the iTunes music store, y' know. wink.gif

i'm going to have to disagree with that.

apple does not rank the highest in thier customer service.

now, i'm not trying to start a war; i only know about iriver's customer service, so that's why i'm going to talk about it:

iriver: call them. tell them your problem (it can be something as small as you hear pops in the music, or that the supplied case scratched the player. )
now; once you tell them your problem, you print something out, and then send your player (only the player) to them, and you get a new, boxed player. if your player is discontinued, they will ship you the replacement. if there is no replacement, they ship you the model with the closest features, and is more expensive than your model.

sure; apple's customer service may be good, but that doesn't warrent saying they rank the highest. other companies rate higher.

oh yea, and for legitment problems, they honor the warrenty well outside the one year. for free.

Are you kidding? Apples Customer Service with their iPods suck.
My friends hold button broke. So he returned it, it worked when he got it back, But he tried his other buttons and his Play button didn't work either. Shortley thereafter his Hold button broke again.
