if you delete them from your computer... there's no file for itunes to play. so no. except what i used to do to save hard drive space is put all my songs on my ipod, take off the autosync, then just plug my ipod into the computer whenever i wanted to be able to listen to my whole music library in itunes.

for the cd thing, you just import them into itunes then put it on your ipod. unless you have your ipod on autosync, you don't need the files on your computer after they're on your ipod. and why is it an issue to put all of your songs on to your ipod at once? isn't the point of having an ipod to be able to have your whole music library at your fingertips?

what i do is i have my playlist of music on my pod so when i plug in my pod i dont have this huge play list to load

you think 20 gigs is a lot

i have a 40 gig and its only like 10% full if that :-p

and if you want to put a cd on your ipod you are going to have to upload the songs to your computer first to get it onto the ipod

dump ipod.

get a player that doesn't require you to keep your files on your computer.

like iriver, or creative, or any other DAP.

You don't have to keep the music files on your hard drive. You can upload them manually to your iPod, through iTunes, and then delete them from your hard drive.

you sure about that?

doesn't itunes check if the files on the ipod are on the hard drive? and if they're not, it deletes them off the ipod? it's an antipiracy feature.

Yes, I'm sure. I used to do it on my laptop, because it only had a 20GB hard drive.

The process is simple. You load up a few files in iTunes that you want to copy, then plug in your iPod and set it to manually update. Then you copy the files in your iTunes library onto the iPod's icon, then disconnect the iPod, and finally, delete the files from your library. Repeat everytime you have new files to add to your iPod. None get deleted because you're not syncing the iPod with your computer's iTunes library.

ahh, you don't sync. i see.

so the problem is when someone goes to thier friend's house, wants a couple of tracks, and then syncs.
