LOL. i think this is going to turn into a spanish speaking thread. Why are you spamming? Stick to the topic. I expected more from a mod. What kind of example are you setting for non-mods like us? Umm, since I'm the one who actually goes to UC Davis, I say Segundo. Tercero area stinks like cow. Cuarto is far from campus, and it's a bitch to bike/walk to your classes. Segundo is closest to everything. |

Shut up.
http://ucdavis.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=...&topic=4870 QUOTE -----------------------------------------------------
CUARTO ----------------------------------------------------- Located just slightly northwest of the main campus, Cuarto is the only area out of the three that is off-campus, though still very close to campus. It's about a 2 to 3 minute bike ride or a 5-10 minute walk to the edge of the main campus, which is the Segundo area actually. Other than being off-campus, Cuarto has a unique element in the sense that it is the only dorm area that is suite-styled. Unlike the traditional dorm style, each suite has two to three bedrooms (these bedrooms can be singles, doubles, or triples) in that suite. So you may have both roommates (depending on whether or not you get that single) and suitemates, as well as floormates! You also share your own common area with your suitemates inside your suite. One of the downsides of living in suites is that most people feel that it is harder to socialize with your floormates and other people in the building, since more people tend not to leave their suite door opened, whereas in traditional style dorms, you can just walk around and find people with their doors opened. Cuarto also has two dining commons: the Oxford dining common and the Castilian dining common (DC). Since Cuarto is split off into two areas, which are separated by a park, there are two DCs. Popular opinion, however, is that the Cuarto DCs have bad food and facilities. But you'll find that most of those people who think that have never actually eaten there, or have only eaten there once or twice. I lived in Cuarto and I have eaten at all four DCs (two cuarto dcs + the segundo and tercero ones), and my opinion is that the food isn't that bad at Cuarto. There is less variety and choice at the Cuarto DCs, and the salad bar isn't as good as the Segundo one though. But in general, the food is on the same level (they all get their food from the same place anyway). A couple of other things about Cuarto are that if you have any desire to bring a car up as a freshman (this does not apply to transfer students), chances are you will want to opt for Cuarto. That is, you will find that as a freshman, it will be nearly impossible to obtain a parking permit for campus. At Cuarto, since it's off-campus, you can just park on the street. However, I should probably warn you that parking is hard to find on weekdays, so sometimes you might have to fight over spots! (Not physically, of course!) And lastly on my mind is that you have to pick up after yourself! Your suite is pretty much the home for your suitemates and yourself. Yes, it comes with its own bathroom, so you are expected (and required) to clean up after yourself. Toiletries such as bathroom tissue, etc. are NOT provided in Cuarto. You are expected to work it out with your suitemates and supply them yourself! Oh and yes, Cuarto has a community kitchen at the first floor of each building. It's not large, but it does have stove tops, an oven, a sink, and a countertop. ----------------------------------------------------- SEGUNDO ----------------------------------------------------- Possibly the most popular out of the three dorm areas, Segundo is the closest dorm area to the Memorial Union (our student center), where most classes are situated around. From Segundo, it is approximately a 5-10 minute walk to the Memorial Union or else about a 2 minute bike ride. Unlike Cuarto, Segundo has traditional-styled dormitories. That means the buildings are designed with several rooms to a floor, and that you have roommates (one to three). Traditional-styled dorms tend to have a more tighter-knit floor community than suite-styled dorms. In all honesty, I would say that it is easier to actually socialize with your floor in traditional-styled dorms as opposed to suite-styled dorms just because people tend to leave their room doors opened in traditional-styled dorms like Segundo. But of course, it also matters how social of a person you are! Unlike Cuarto, which only has five dormitory buildings, Segundo has nearly a dozen buildings. Only three of these buildings (known as Segundo North) are new buildings (built sometime around 2003). Most of the buildings are old, but fairly well-kept. Each floor has one to two bathrooms for your gender. --From my understanding, there are no co-ed bathrooms in the dormitories at UC Davis. These bathrooms include shower areas. Newer bathrooms have shower doors, older bathrooms have simply a shower curtain. Other than being the closest to the center of classes and most campus activities (the Memorial Union), Segundo also has one of the two new dining commons. While this is by opinion, I think that Segundo has the best DC out of all four. Tercero and Segundo serve usually the same variety of food, and are both large and modern, but in my opinion Segundo has a better salad bar, which is why I'm giving them my thumbs up! You should definitely try multiple DCs and decide for yourself! Yes, your DC meal plan swipes will work at any DC, regardless of where you actually live. Lastly, there is also a type of small store located in Segundo known as "The Junction." This store is maintained by Sodexho, the same company that maintains and operates the dining common facilities. That means your swipes will also work inside these stores. However, please note that your swipes only have a cash value of $2 after you purchase them. (You purchase them at anywhere from $4 to $8 per swipe, depending on how large your meal plan is.) So it is generally more affordable to go purchase food items from Safeway, Albertsons, or Rite Aid. ----------------------------------------------------- TERCERO ----------------------------------------------------- Similar to Segundo, Tercero is comprised of traditional-styled dormitories. I am assuming that you have been reading along, so I won't repeat what I said about the social aspect of traditional-styled dorms. Instead, this section will highlight the differences of Tercero from the other dorm areas, particularly Segundo. While Segundo is located at the northwest corner of the main campus, Tercero is located at the southwest corner of the main campus. In fact, it's location makes it so that it is bordered on the west by the cow pens, and on the south by the horse stables. While you normally won't smell the cows in Cuarto or Segundo, or around most of campus, you will definitely smell them in Tercero when it gets hot or when it is windy. But there are upsides to living in Tercero. That includes Tercero's modern and spacious dining commons. Also, the Tercero South buildings--the most recently built dorm buildings on campus--are a plus side too if you get them. They have traditionally been the buildings which summer orientation has been held in, and are usually the buildings you will tour if you go on a dorm tour in Tercero. With that said, it should be noted that most of the Tercero buildings, just like Segundo, are old. Most of Tercero are traditional-styled dormitories, however there are mini-suites located in one of the building complexes in Tercero. These are just like suites where you share a bathroom between two to four other rooms. However, unlike the suites of Cuarto, there is no common area in a minisuite. Also, I believe the bathrooms are maintained by the custodial staff in minisuites. Similarly to Segundo, Tercero also has its own shop where you can buy food, drinks, and snacks. It looks a littler cuter than Segundo's Junction though, and there are also patio tables outside. Tercero is also the closest dorm area to many engineer and chemistry classes. It is also the closest dorm area to the Silo, which houses several fast food restaurants such as Taco Bell, Carl's Jr, Pizza Hut, and a variation of Starbucks. It also has delicious Silo Subs (sandwiches) and crepes to-go. (Please note: meal plan swipes do not work at the Silo!!! The Aggie Gold does, however. So does cash and credit/debit cards.) |
