if the person is willing to trade one account to gain access to another which is currently banned, i say why not? what's the harm in that? they've changed enough,

and if CB Admins really wanted to BAN people, they'd make sure that person can't register for a new account, so there's no real point in banning people when they can just make more accounts.

^ The only way to make sure that they can't register for a new account is to ban the IP address a person is using. We don't do this for multiple reasons, but a simple example would be people who log on using a campus computer (there's a lot of college age people here). If we ban a shared IP then anyone using that IP can't access the site. And a lot of people who create duplicates are sneaky and don't use only one IP address. Besides creating duplicate accounts isn't reason enough to get banned from the site, which is why there are "Duplicate" member groups and "Banned" groups.

btw i wasnt asking you to change my username, but just to not BAN every account i make, cmon, only james was cool enough to have every account banned upon activation
also you liar, i thought you stepped down for a better life
Not going to nitpick about the banning. But why should you get special treatment and be allowed to have duplicate topics when other people can't, mister?

also, no lies, I did step down, but nobody seemed to be modding Feedback.

I still don't get what the problem is with dupe accounts.

I suppose if you are using dupe accounts abusively, like using them to vote multiple times in a poll or something, then it's bad. But if you just got bored with your name, or want to get a fresh start, why is the dupe banned on sight?

Understood, but really, why can't people just wait to change their name. I mean, that is really what this (particular thread) is about. I'm pretty cool if someone completely f*cks up their name change and will change it to something else. But in this thread, we're talking about a dude has asks us to change his name several times and for him to make duplicate accounts because he wants another name change is sort of insulting, you know?

And duplicate accounts have been more problematic than not. The majority of the duplicate accounts I've seen here have been used to spam so I guess you can say that those who have done so are somewhat responsible for that rule.

No sorry Rebs, I dont see how it is insulting at all. I don't claim any mods to be incompetent or lazy. I make dupe accounts cause I dont want to pester mods with petty things. Its not like you don't IP check most new users anyway, as long as it matches up with mine, and usually its not hard to tell that its me. Btw, sorry about the gonorrhea too

I don't get the problem either. I'll admit, I have several alts, but I never (read rarely) even have any reason to log in to one of them, let alone abuse them.

They are afraid that if I get to make a shit load of accounts, then everyone else will. (kind of sounds like the republican's view of gay marriage), but if they IP trace an account and see its mine, I don't get what the problem would be.

The majority of people in jail are black, so should we ban black people from this website?

Why not enforce no dupes on a case by case basis? If someone is abusing it, it's grounds for banning. You can ban without IP banning, can't you? What is the purpose of a separate dupe group (haha that rhymes)?

Hey, I'm up for discussion for just about anything and we can think about and discuss duplicate options but I have to tell you, I have yet to see a duplicate account that hasn't ended in spamming. I'd love to get additional opinions as well from community members and staff members.

i don't think i particularly care either way. although i still don't get why screen names are such a huge deal and you can't sleep at night unless you have the one you want.

if people wanna discuss changing that rule i think it's a good thing to discuss. it wasn't a big deal until tung went through that phase of wanting to run around being a jackass, get suspended, make a new account and get back on here to continue being a jackass. i think that's when the rule was put in place because he was getting out of any punishment for his bashing and shit by just making a new account to have his warning level back at 0%

Admins will have to transfer warn level to the new accounts, so even if they don't have to put old usernames into the duplicate group, it's not like a person creates a new account and forgets about the old.

That is definitely something to consider. I'm sort of thinking of the PokeSpam Fest (and I know that it wasn't just one person). It would have been warnings x the amount of duplicate accounts, if that makes sense.

I don't know, like JC I'm personally neither here or there about duplicates at the present. I do see the disadvantages from a staff perspective more than I see the positive though, to be honest but obviously since I'm one who may have to do some of the clean up, I'm probably a bit biased, which is why I like the idea of a discussion.

I don't really know why this is being discussed, because it will always come back to staff asking WHY and members asking WHY NOT.

Consider this:

Many successful forums (Facepunch Studios, SomethingAwful, etc.) allow alternate accounts.

Actually, Many forums that I have seen DO NOT allow alternate accounts because its stupid to have people bounce from one account to another on a whim because they are "bored with that name for the week".

The point of joining a forum is to create a identity for yourself so to speak. People should be able to get to know you under one name for a while before one decides its time to change their name. That is the POINT in why there is 6 month bloody wait before you can change a name. Multiple accounts defeat the purpose of this.

who cares. awful reasoning that no one cares about. why should we force people to keep a name for the sake of other people "getting to know them". makes no sense to me.

Sorry, but just because other forums do it isn't reason enough for us to. That doesn't answer why people want this to happen.

Let's work with this one. How about an answer to why should duplicates be allowed, other than "why not?"

If you head to Facepunch's OIFY, or SomethingAwful's FYAD, then you're going to see some pretty barbaric stuff. We have our VIP lounge, which isn't quite the same, but is there for the same purpose.

Outside of OIFY, Facepunch has some of the strictest moderation of any forum out there. I've seen people get permabanned for too many misspellings in one post.
SomethingAwful's ten dollar registration fee keeps out morons.

And besides, even google thinks Facepunch is f*cking Incredible.

My take on the duplicate accounts. Is that they're more trouble than their worth. It'd work if it was treated to a case-by-case basis. However, who has time to do that, if someone is making a new account each day. The majority, as Rebecca did point out was that the people that are using duplicate accounts are either to a) anonymously berate others, or b) spam anonymously.

I'm with Kevin about the username thing, I had mind changed, and changed it to something I liked at the time, and was over with a week later, though, I did wait for 6 months before I changed it to its current. For the user to be able to change their username when they want to by making another account should be fine, if the other account is disabled. It get's more troublesome to the admins, and it has glitches with the cb profiles when admins are changing people's usernames.

I'm kind of on the fence on this issue, because I've used duplicate accounts for both reasons, one to anonymously voice my opinions about the site in feedback. And also to spam anonymously. But if better moderation of these duplicate accounts are taken, such as someone requests to an admin before one is made, then the admin accepts the request, dupes the current account and lets the user use their dupe, I wouldn't see the problem. I don't feel the same way if you let one user have full rights on their 20 different accounts though. One at a time please.
