Have you perhaps tried to start a petition? Find out when your town is having its next meeting and see if you and your parents and anyone else can go and express your concern. If you talk, they'll listen. Just keep it up and make sure that your city officials know that you mean business.

P.S. And incidentally, how is this advertising? The guy was just posting a link to what seems to be a pretty important webpage. How else is information supposed to be disseminated across the Web?

Well because it isn't a personal website it is a form of advertising.

I thought that adverting personal websites was what the rule was trying to prevent; it seems contrary to the spirit of the Internet to prevent the spread of information on other websites, especially useful ones such as this one.

I'm sure he can advertise the petition in his sig.

No, sorry. You have that backwards. Personal website are ok. Anything else is not.

Anyways, let's help him with some ideas. This topic is about his towns water problem, not what advertising is and isn't. If you'd like to discuss that, PM me where it is appropriate, not in this topic where it's spam. If anyone is interested, feel free to PM him or give him some ideas in here.

That is allowed because it is your source it is not advertising or promoting a certain cause or company. You are simply citing where you got your facts or story from.

I think you should seriously bring this up in a town meeting or get a few friends to help you with a petition or something.

So, then all this topic needs to do is change the content a little. Say change it to:

La Mesa watersheld is being threatened. Do you think this is right in the name of building new homes? Here's the petition site that will give you more information. While you're there, signing your name to the petition will be greatly appreciated.

So then the link is not promoting a cause, it would be a source of information. No longer advertising, thank you very much. Can we have the link again?

I suggest just PMing the person that posted this post for the Link if you would like to sign the petition. Spritied Away, you hold a good point, I do agree. Although some people are always going to disagree and it could be a sign of advertising.

Its very nice of the person that made this topic to ask for people to help him with this. I think its very nice of the people that want to help him But if anyone would like to help just PM the guy.

You know I'm glad you mentioned that because I was thinking this could be into news some how since is is an issue in his community. And I believe that links in there is a given because it's giving credit to where you got the information so it's not plagiarism, as is the same with the debate forum and to add to the point you are trying to make. You know that. Don't play dumb.

If you want to look at the rule strictly, yes, this was a form of advertising according to the rule. I personally questioned it but as a moderator, I have to abide by the rules and enforce them. In that case I won't put the link back up because rules are rules. Maybe we should change the rule around a bit to allow links such as these. Until then, the best solution is to to PM him because I'd love for you to help him out. I'll even talk to him about posting something up in the news section. Maybe an article about the issue and then he may supply the petition.

Just to clear this up, did you just accuse me of playing dumb by any chance? I will bring this up in bylaws if I have to, but saying that you deleted the link because you were "strictly" following the rules is rather funny because it makes all your mod peers and all the mods who preceded you look completely useless and lazy. He wants to make things better for people that want to sign the peptition so hes PMing the guy to make a topic in news about it and to post the link so he can get people that want to help him to sign the peptition.

WTF guys, he put a link in his post because he's supporting a CAUSE. This has been done before, hasn't it? There are a lot of sites that support breast-cancer awareness, aids awareness, diseases awareness, whatever awareness... are those not allowed to be posted up, either?

He happens to be petitioning something and he can only do it through that particular website. It's promoting a good cause, yes, and I guess that can be seen as "advertisement"... but do you guys have absolutely no common sense? There's a difference between advertising a product or a website for the sake of advertising and advertising a cause that can build up to something great for his community.

And just because I'm on this train of thought... cB's gotten really pathetic over the past two years. Mods used to actually have a brain and use the common sense that they've been blessed with. Now it's all about "strictly following the rules."

What's happening to your community is almost like what's already happened to mine. Our town's currently owned by a development company and every year, they're cutting down more and more of the land that residents used for recreation and turning it into shopping centers, housing projects, etc. The situation's not as serious as yours, obviously, but having an H.E.B or Walmart open up in your backyard is really, really annoying.

How does that make THEM (PREVIOUS MODS NOT HIM) look lazy and useless? Strictly following the rules means taking all "references and links to anything that is not personal, such as websites and forums" out. That is "strictly" following the rules. Who agreed that this is advertisement? Who presented a better case?

How about we all just be mature about it. The guy has been PMed to make a new topic about it in news and to post the link to get some help on it for anyone to sign the petition.

How about now spamming his thread in here also, so maybe he can keep it and start keeping things to the topic on which this topic was made for.

I most certainly will and I believe I know what you're talking about in the by-laws but, technically and unfortunately, the by-laws aren't in effect yet. I believe James (I Shot JFK) is still typing them up and there are a few odds and ends that need to be finished. I'm a little foggy on the subject, but last I heard, that was the case.
