Singer/songwriter Stephen Shere delves into serious topic matters such as suicide and depression with an intensity that is not for the faint of heart. Hailing from the greater Chicagoland area, he recently completed a self-recorded 14-song demo, 4 of which are featured here. What the music lacks in production is more than made up for in passion, overriding the technical shortcomings bound to be encountered on a limited budget. Difficult to categorize, the music ranges from a soft-spoken, acoustical sadness to a fast-paced, burning madness, reflecting the anguish and regret he seems to be drowning in. While encompassing such a diverse musical range, he somehow manages to maintain a characteristic style and undeniable energy throughout.

The first song listed on this site is the controversial "Nightmare of Reality", a song that seems to defend suicide rather than discourage it. Soaring guitar melodies and catchy chorus aside, the real depth of "Nightmare of Reality" lies in it's lyrical content, providing an inside perspective of the thought process and emotions that might lead one to the contemplation of suicide, attacking the concepts of god and religion in the process. "Self-destruction" is an aptly suited song title that illustrates the mental breakdown that one experiences when quite literally self-destructing, and discusses how drug abuse is not only involved in such a path but is often an extreme resort for dealing with self-hatred. "Clearly" is perhaps the most well written song on this site, eloquently and poetically comparing depression to weathering the emotions of an impending storm, and how one can feel as if they are drowning on the variety of emotions depression floods them with. Not afraid to show his softer side, "Closure" is his most personal song, exploring the pain and sense of loss evoked by life’s most inevitable and certain fate.

Shunning the industry standards of topic matter and song structure, one might be initially taken aback by 3rd Lane’s unorthodox music, particularly the time length of certain songs. Yet it is rigid time constraints and formulaic song structures that so often limit much of today’s popular music, melting it all into one big indistinguishable, overproduced, soulless void. 3rd Lane serves as quite the breath of fresh air, reminding us what music is at it’s best, what it is at it’s purest: an uncensored and passionate expression of one’s innermost emotions. 3rd Lane reminds us of the inner demons that we all must at times face.
