Tried unplugging/plugging mic, already updated latest drivers - what else?

I'm using the GeForce 210 hdmi thingy for my video and audio so maybe that's a problem.

close down anything that might be capturing the mic (steam, skype, etc.)

I got a new mic/headset. It works. Now I'm selling wow account though.
