experience? why do people post ugly photos of their homes?

I tried this last year, but every listing that sounded perfect either didn't have an address or any contact info so it turned out to be a huge waste of time for me. Some of my friends have been successful with it though.

my two sublets in nyc was through craigslist. both places were great, but the second guy gave me a lot of trouble when i tried to leave one month before my time was up. other than that, it was a good experience. just watch out for scams.

i don't understand scam thing. how do you get scammed.

did ya'll choose by pictures or descriptions

a lot of people post up places and when you respond to the ad, they'll tell you that they're in another state at the moment, but they want you to drive by the location and if you like it, to fill out an application form so they can run a credit/background check or whatever.

i mean, it's pretty obvious to never give your info to someone you've never met, but some people do get tricked.

my priorities in order were 1) location, 2) price, and 3) description.

I found my first sublet in New York via Craigslist. I met with the girl before moving in. She seemed nice and offered me the apartment, so I took it.

Turns out she was kind of crazy. Not in a stab-you-in-the-shower kind of way. She was just weird. I was glad to get out of there after five months. Although she was cool and let me out of my lease two weeks early, and she gave me my full security deposit back, so I'll give her that.

I dunno. Craigslist can be hit or miss. I'd only use it as a last-ditch option. I didn't use Craigslist at all for my current apartment, and I'm much happier.

what did you use for your current place

i sort of kept to myself and the guy i was subletting from kept to himself. he guilt-tripped me for leaving early... i told him i was going to leave in december, but circumstances changed, so i ended up needing to go in mid-november. he then started telling me that i promised i'd stay until january (i have proof in our emails that it was december, not january) and started saying that if i didn't pay for november, he wouldn't be able to make rent.

so then i was like, "... what happened to my security deposit? i'm technically paid up until the end of november. if anything, i should be getting half of that back."

and he was like "well money moves around a lot, i don't have it anymore."

which was when i was just like "well thats not my problem."

and he goes "ok well i can't MAKE you pay, but if you can live with yourself knowing that i'm in a tight situation right now..."

i didn't ask for him to give me half of the security deposit back just because a) i did feel bad about leaving early even though we didn't have a written contract, and b) i really don't think he would have given it back to me.

That's the danger in subletting. Technically, you're supposed to set a security deposit aside and not touch the money; it's not actually yours. (In fact, in New York state, a landlord who rents more than a certain number of units -- 6, I think -- has to put it into an interest-bearing holding account, and give you the deposit back with interest. Obviously this doesn't apply to a person who sublets an apartment, but it's still a fun fact.) Unfortunately no one ever does that.

I was lucky, but also kind of surprised, because I wasn't convinced I'd get my deposit back. Then again, the girl I subleased from was had everything spelled out to the T in the contract. She was pedantic to a fault -- when I drafted a contract to release me from the lease early, she got even nitpicky about comma placement.

i haven't looked for places on craiglist, but i have posted on craiglist twice for subletting my apartment during my summers off for college, and i didn't have any problems with it, except for the occasional scammers who were easy enough to ignore.

I have yet to get a place on craigslist, though I have definitely looked. My boyfriend and his roommates are wanting to move to the beach, so we've been looking. But there are some sketch ads out there, thats fer sure.
I'm still not convinced on the whole moving to the beach thing, because the job market down there is not good {{or so we've been told by atleast 5 people}}. So, we shall see how that goes.

Currently looking through craigslist for a new place but I haven't found anything. Everyone's pictures so far are of them making out with their cats with "MORE CATS WELCOME". Ugh.

I would feel like I would get scammed from that. I don't know could be just me

Currently looking at some places on craigslist and it is funny how if you look hard enough you can wind up with some steals. I am moving back to the big city, so I am confident that I will find a place that I want in my range, but it is just whether to go with a roomie or not on the first place.....Suggestions?

idk what your price range is. if you're flat broke like i was, roomies make it a whole lot cheaper. just play it safe, meet up with them before agreeing to anything, talk everything through, make them show you their lease, etc. i was stupid and didn't ask to see his lease before agreeing to stay with him. i asked him to show it to me about a month after moving in and every time i brought it up, he was like "oh, i need to find it" or "i think it's at my girlfriend's place." i was probably paying more than him.

I never once felt safe living in this house.

This woman regularily invaded my privacy, entered my room daily without my permission, harassed my cat, and went through my things. On an almost daily basis, she would scream at the top of her lungs at me for using too much water, not washing a glass, forgetting to take out the trash, and other small issues. She would start fights, get in my face, call me names, and generally make my life miserable. I had to tip toe in and lock my door whenever I was home. She walked into my room without knocking or waiting for a reply numerous times.

This woman comes across as nice, if a bit eccentric, but this is an act. She has mood swings, and is dangerous to be around. She lives in the basement of the house she rents, and has no job and no friends, thus her life revolves around harassing her roommates.

When I was moving out (after being kicked out for standing up to her when she was threatening me), she tired to physically assult me, and hit my boyfriend in the face, resulting in a bloddy gash and his glasses being broken.

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS WOMAN. You will regret it, she is psychotic and will make your life miserable.

Her name is NINA, she live in KENSINGTON, she is about 45, slim, black hair, olive skin, and claims to be a yoga instructor.

Yeah I found all of my places using craigslist. The one I'm currently at is the best and cheapest place so far, and the actual ad wasn't very detailed and it didn't have a picture. It's about 400 dollars cheaper than my previous place and 5x nicer.
