first round: book cover

first round is to redesign a book cover. you can choose whatever book you'd like. you need to do the full cover, so you need a front, back and spine. you need to set up the document to be one full piece though, not three separate images. here's an example:

the front cover is 5 and half inches, the back cover is 5 and half inches and there's a 1 inch spin. so therefore the actual document is 12 inches wide and 8 and half inches tall.

this is just a sizing suggestion. you can change the sizing but make sure you're proportionate. don't do a 4 inch wide back cover and a 5 inch front cover. also keep in mind the spine size. the spine doesn't have to be one inch, but it needs to be considerably realistic. for example, don't redesign a book that's 700 pages and give it a 3/4th of an inch spine. there's no way 700 pages are going to fit into 3/4th of an inch.

send your design to me. you just needa give me a jpg or png image of it, not the whole file. if you're doing a book that you've read and you're including things in the design that people wouldn't get if they haven't read the book...give me an explanation with your entry so the judges will have a better understanding of your design.

send your entry to me by midnight may 15th

if you've got any more questions ask here or pm me.

Could you give dimensions in pixels?
brooklyneast05
12 inches = 864 pixels
8.5 inches = 612 pixels

like i said though you don't HAVE to stick to these exact dimensions, but it still needs to be realistic and big enough we can clearly see what's going on.
Firiath
I think I'm gonna do this :D

Does it have to be a released book? Should we try and do a somewhat popular one?

so.. we can use pictures right? like not just illustrate? and if so, does it have to be taken by us? can we use a stock/photomanip it or something & give cred?

Just use stock from like DA and look for stock that doesn't require credit. Most doesn't.

So far mine is coming along really well!

yes ma'am.

you guys can approach it however you want as far as pictures vs. illustration ect. like you said though you have to give credit, so when you submit it make sure to include information on what's not original. a link to the original image would be a plus if possible.

this goes for everyone, but,

for example, if you got a photo offline and manipulated it a lot then it would probably be in you guys favor to show us the original version too. just because it gives a better sense for the work involved you know

Maccabee
Do we have to give credit even if the creator didn't ask for it. Cause I have already gotten a ton of stock images and textures from DA.
brooklyneast05
^no, just credit when crediting would apply to anything else. if crediting isn't needed in general then it isn't needed in this.

but again, to everyone, i would just encourage you guys to say something about what you made when you turn it in. in the same way that it's in your advantage to show an original version if you did a lot of work manipulating, it's also in your favor to point out if you did something like use your own photography. i duno if that's very clear or not. basically i'm just saying if you want us to know something specific you need to tell us. cause we can't necessarily just guess the extent of your work.

Pretty much make it look like it was hard to do. haha.

I have noticed that when it is designers critiquing other designers it's not really about the final product. More about how much talent it takes to do it, and how difficult it is to achieve. haha. That's why I like cB!
brooklyneast05
i mean that's true in a sense.

it sorta depends on what you make that determines how much "making it look hard to do" matters. if you're using other's images offline then what you do to the image is a pretty big factor. especially if you're competing against someone who did illustration where they made all the stuff themselves. realistically you kinda have to do more work to be on the same level.

for the record how hard it is to make isn't necessarily the determining factor for the winner so no one needs to think that.
Maccabee
O and once we submit, can we send like updates and have you cancel the previous submission or whatever? Like in the last contest? Cause i finished mine but i might want to make some updates later.

um, well you can but it needs to be reasonable and limited. i mean there's really no point in sending it now, with a week left if you're most likely going to send another version later. if someone finished and sent it to me a few days early and then realized they messed something up or saw a flaw, then yeah i'd still accept it.

i don't want new versions of things every day coming in a week before the deadline though just because there's really no point that i can see to that. if you think you're probably going to make numerous changes, don't send it.

Dang, Joseph has a lot of questions.

This is awesome, though! I can't wait to see what everyone does!
