Do you like the checkerboard background? Or is it too hard on the eyes? (no transparency is very hard on the eyes) If I come to a conclusion with no checkerboard background then the background will be white... or any other suggestions?

I like it with the checkered background, but I think it should be lighter so it's easier to look at. I definitely like the idea though. :)

yes... I think it should be much lighter. Not such a harsh gray next to the bright white. Make it softer on the eyes.

But I would keep some sort of checkerboard in the background.

Yeah, a little lighter would make it perfect.
