Break out the tissues: Kimberly Stewart and Talan Torriero have broken their engagement.
After almost two full weeks of betrothal, Rod Stewart's daughter and her Laguna Beach hunk apparently decided that vow-swapping was less compelling than spit-swapping and (mercifully) decided to call the whole thing off.
The news of the duo's decision to uncouple was almost too much for a nation already reeling from the shock of Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson's startling separation announcement.
Though Stewart and Torriero's throngs of imaginary fans immediately flocked to their sides, pretending to beg them to reconsider, the twosome would not be swayed.
"It was just too soon to enter into a lifelong commitment," the pair's reps said in a joint statement. "It is better to have a brief engagement than a short marriage. The couple continue to share their time together and remain open to whatever the future may hold."
Stewart's rep, Elliot Mintz, said the twosome "remain friends," but Torriero's flack, Jack Ketsoyan, said they are no longer romantically linked.
Torriero, 19, and Stewart, 26, first announced their engagement Nov. 15, after a whirlwind courtship estimated to have lasted all of a couple of weeks.
While brief, their relationship lasted long enough for the pair to be jointly involved in a fender-bender along with Paris Hilton and her beau, Stavros Niarchos.
Shortly thereafter, the twosome made their way to Neil Lane, where they picked out a hefty five-carat diamond sparkler to adorn Stewart's ring finger as a symbol of their commitment.
"It's almost too big," Stewart gushed to Us Weekly at the time. "It's beautiful."
(No word on what Stewart's plans for the ring might be, now that the wedding's off.)
The return to single status leaves both halves of the couple free to focus on their careers. Torriero has said he is attempting to break into both the music and acting game, while Stewart, a frequent Hilton sidekick, was once rumored to be replacing Nicole Richie on The Simple Life.

"We are celebrating every moment with our beautiful boy, we just can't take our eyes off him."
