the other day because of money my boyfriend and i are raising for our 60 km breast cancer walk (we need 4000$) he and i were chosen to go to a symposium on how to make a change.
The guest speaker was world famour international child rights activist Craig Kielburger, who founded FREE THE CHILDREN. i had the oppurtunity to meet him face to face.
in his speech he told of when he was in Ecuador to build a primary school in an impovrished community. Time and supplies were running out, so Craig and his team went to explain to the village elder that they needed to get on a plane soon. She simply replied, “No problem. I’ll call a minga”.

In the local dialect of Puruhae India, she forcefully shouted, “A minga will happen tomorrow”. The next day hundreds of men women and children were at the small village ready to help build the school. many came from far away towns.

Amazed, he asked the chief, “What happened? What is a minga?” She explained that this traditional word is a call to action—it means ‘a community coming together to work for the benefit of all’. When people hear this word, they stop all personal activities and come together for the collective good. Their translator struggled to explain the idea, and he finally asked us: “What is the word for ‘minga’ in English?” Huh?

The best that Craig could come up with is a barn raising, or a riot for good.

isnt it sad how many words we have in the english language but do not have one for "minga."
i mean, we have so many terms for money, but for something as good as "minga" we have nothing.

If only this would spread and a word could be created. a sense of loyalty to your neighbour be created?
