QUOTE(misskentucky @ Dec 26 2005, 12:23 AM) Agnostic, Atheist, Freethinker, Deist, I pretty much agree with all those. I was reading about religions tonight. I can't decide on one. Agnostic I suppose. My friends always try to convert me to Christianity :\. I was baptized Christian/Catholic though. Parents. How can you be an atheist and a deist?.. |

Well, I'm not atheist. I suppose I switch on and off. I do believe that there's *someone* up there, watching us and hopefully for the better, guiding us, but I don't think he/she/it has total control or that he/she/it is all-knowing. Strange world, this is.

I'm Lutheran which is like a form of Christian. But I'm not very religous. I mean I pray and stuff and believe in god but I don't go to church.

QUOTE(Acid Bath Slayer @ Dec 25 2005, 10:50 PM) Just because you are an agnostic doesn't mean you can't be a theist or an atheist. In fact, you have to be one of them. You either believe in god or you don't. Even if you do believe that we can not know spiritual truth as an agnostic, you still either believe or you do not believe. It's the law of the excluded middle. I hold agnostic trends, but I also do not believe in any gods. This makes me an atheist. Agnosticism is an epistemological position, nothing more. Is it true that you believe in God? If it isn't. You're an atheist. Simple. Here, read an older LJ post I made about the subject. I needs to be updated, but it's still a decent article. The Agnostic Trend: What Do We Know? I did not say that agnostics cannot be theist or atheist, I said, in short, that agnostics do not have to be categorized as theist or atheist because many of them are unsure of either. I, myself, am atheist sometimes, and theist at random. It makes sense to me that God created the universe and it also make sense that there isn't a God and that the universe came to be on its own. Will you elaborate more about why I must be atheist or theist? Agnosticism is an epistemological position and the consequence does not contend that an agonostic must be theist or atheist. You defined, in your article, that agnosticism, in layman's term, is without knowledge, yet you force agnostics to have knowledge of whether they are theist or atheist with no in-betweens. Does this not defeats the concept of agnosticism altogether? Hmm, I understand that there is a case of weak and strong agnosticism that may define agnostic theist and agnostic atheist, but it seems you don't think belief in between the two can exist. Also, within the full context of the short quote you took from Huxley, agnostics can accept that which can be proven to be true. Agnostic theists then, have probable cause to believe that a god may exist and this may be proven and the opposite is true for agnostic atheists. But what of agnostics who do not have probable cause for either? |
