Lullaby

Author: Chuck Palahniuk

Genre: Fantasy

brief synopsis from book
Quote
Ever heard of a culling song? It’s a lullaby sung in Africa to give a painless death to the old or infirm. The lyrics of a culling song kill, whether spoken or even just thought. You can find one on page 27 of Poems and Rhymes from Around the World, an anthology that is sitting on the shelves of libraries across the country, waiting to be picked up by unsuspecting readers.

Reporter Carl Streator discovers the song’s lethal nature while researching Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and before he knows it, he’s reciting the poem to anyone who bothers him. As the body count rises, Streator glimpses the potential catastrophe if someone truly malicious finds out about the song. The only answer is to find and destroy every copy of the book in the country. Accompanied by a shady real-estate agent, her Wiccan assistant, and the assistant’s truly annoying ecoterrorist boyfriend, Streator begins a desperate cross-country quest to put the culling song to rest.

What Critics Said
"Mr. Palahniuk further refines his ability to create parables that are as substantial as they are off-the-wall."
- The New York Times

"Genius-on-sixteen-different-leavels... constantly surprising, disturbingly funny... Genuinely subversive."
- Bookforum

"Among sick puppies, Palahniuk is the top dog... A unique talent."
- People

"More twisted than a sack of pretzels and edgier than an octagon, Chuck Palahniuk has pumped out another memorable read... This is his best yet."
- Playboy

My Review
First of all this definitely isn't a book for the kids due to vulgar language and sexual references.
(example: The cop grabs his crotch "This is amazing. Being with you like this, you're giving me an erection")

I thought this book was very innovative and a tad but disturbing. i was a little disappointed on how short the book was (260pgs), but it was still an excellent read. the storyline might seem like your usual "good vs. evil" but there's a lot more to it than you think. one part of the book that got to me was when to main character thought of how the world would be like if sound could kill, how listening could be the cause of death. i felt like the book was unfinished, i'm really hoping that there's a second part to the book, but i don't think Chuck Palahniuk is the type that makes sequels or anything. overall this book is a must read. if you like taking risks, i think you'll enjoy this.

haha...... i also did a book report on this and i found it hard to decide which parts of the book were appropriate to mention. so far i read four of his books; lullaby, choke, fight club, and invisible monsters.
