I heard about this show in Nylon magazine so I checked it out online. Apart from those horrible southern accents, it looks pretty neat, it may be worth watching.

Anyone else interested?

Oh my god, the promotional campaign for this show has been CRAZY in New York. In one of the most notable cases, I actually saw a girl on a street corner talking about anti-vampirism (of course she worked for HBO).

But I'm really excited for it. I mean, Alan Ball, hello!

Posted by: manic Sep 24 2008, 10:11 PM

I love this series. The southern accents are pretty accurate for the Louisiana area (very annoying and drawn out).

Suki is so cute. I've already watched the first 3 episodes - can't wait till Sunday.

My friend watches this show and I have to admit the ads on the bus stations really interest me. whistling.gif My speakers aren't working atm, but I'll watch the trailer when I get the chance. I do love Vampires, though.

I saw this and my first thought was "uh, Twilight?"

Posted by: superstitious May 31 2009, 08:25 PM

I bought the series (DVD) on sort of whim, after watching one episode (similar thing happened with Veronica Mars). I love this show. I even ordered HBO for the summer so that I can see new episodes.

There isn't much that Alan Ball is attached to that I don't like (although I think that American Beauty is pretty overrated).

I like that it isn't typical vampire fare. The southern setting is perfect - a fantastic mix of comfort and absolute creepiness. Lots of nudity, sex and drug use, which I wasn't prepared for but doesn't seem to be superfluous, as it's fitting for the series. The characters are diverse and the acting is very good, in my opinion. I'm definitely not a big fan of Anna Paquin, so it's saying much for me to state that opinion.

I'm looking forward to season two (although there is a favorite character of mine who more than likely will not be returning). I LOVE Eric and supposedly there will be much more of him this season.

Oddly, I prefer the series over the book (I've only read part of the first book).

@Janette (and I know the post is older), but the only similarity to Twilight I see is that both mythos have heavy vampire involvement. Sookie's telepathy was written long before Bella's "talent" was revealed (they both have "mental" type abilities). Harris isn't nearly the prude that Meyer is and although both books are pretty elementary to read, Harris is definitely more entertaining and her mythos translates well for an HBO series (it seems that HBO is even more lenient that the typical rated R fare).

Oh, pretty season 2 trailer:

i'm so sick of someone mentioning twilight whenever someone says vampire.

can we all just agree that stephanie meyer's "vampires" are not really vampires? maybe call them "manpires"?

saw this. If your interested in porn, vampires, and vampire porn then this is a good show for you.

tbh the southern accent is why i've put off downloading/watching this series. i'm super duper bored now with nobody i know in nueva jersey, so i'm in the middle of torrenting season 1.

Posted by: superstitious Jun 1 2009, 09:44 PM

I've lived in the south (Nashville) for nearly two years now and the southern thang grows on you (well, it grew on me at least). I might not have enjoyed the series as much had I first seen it while I lived in southern California. There is something seductive and at the same time, absolutely grotesque about the south. The LA setting is perfect for this series. I'm also very impressed with all of the actors' accents. The main vampire (Bill) actor is British. The actor who plays Eric (another main vampire) is Swedish and the dude that plays Jason is Australian.

The second season looks more interesting, as a whole, even though I very much love the first season.

Have I mentioned how friggin awesome I feel about Eric being a more prominent part of season 2 (Eric plays a major role in the books, from what I've read/heard).

Posted by: kaijubot Jun 3 2009, 10:54 PM

Holy shit, ok I finally finished season one.

The acting is amazing plus the accent grew a little on me. Of course, I think I'd prefer it without the accent, but I must admit, it gives character.

Love Bill, love Eric more, on the fence about Jason, on the fence about Sookie (yeah, really can't get Rogue out of my head and seeing Rogue's tits was not on my top 10 list of tits I want to see... not that I keep a list).

Not going to start season 2 until it's done airing.

Which... will be a few months of waiting I guess. :(

Rebs - how was what you've read of the books? I'm thinking about reading it, but I don't want it to ruin the series for me.

Posted by: superstitious Jun 4 2009, 01:16 PM

The acting is definitely fantastic. It's weird, I actually loathe Anna Paquin as Rogue (for a variety of XMen comic fan girl reasons) so it's been very pleasing to see her in a role that better suits her.

I've read half of the first book and only snippets from the next 3. Honestly, I favor the series, which is very atypical of me (I usually prefer the books). The series has a better pace and I like the direction of the characters more. Eric becomes more and more prominent in the books and the series is following suit (which is awesome, because I friggin LOVE Alexander Skarsgård).

I'm only subcribing to HBO when the series is currently on. I like it THAT much.

Posted by: kaijubot Jun 4 2009, 10:37 PM

Soooo, I started reading the books and am halfway through the 2nd book. Eric is, by far, my favorite character right now.

Posted by: kaijubot Jun 4 2009, 11:15 PM

LOL ok so for some reason, I found this conversation between Sookie and Eric in the 2nd book really funny

QUOTE
"The reason I called you is that I need you to go to a party with me tomorrow night."

A long silence.

"Bill is no longer your bedmate? The differences you developed in Dallas are permanent?"

"What I should have said is, 'I need a bodyguard for tomorrow night.' Bill's in Dallas." I was smacking myself on the forehead with the heel of my hand. "See, there's a long explanation, but the situation is that I need to go to a party tomorrow night that's really just a . . . well, it's a . . . kind of orgy thing? And I need someone with me in case . . . just in case."

"That's fascinating," Eric said, sounding fascinated. "And since I'm going to be in the neighborhood, you thought I might do as an escort? To an orgy?"

"You can look almost human," I said.

"This is a human orgy? One that excludes vampires?"

"It's a human orgy that doesn't know a vampire is coming."

"So, the more human I look the less frightening I'll be?"

"Yes, I need to read their thoughts. Pick their brains. And if I get them thinking about a certain thing, andpick their brains, then we can get out of there." I'd just had a great idea about how to get them to think about Lafayette. Telling Eric was going to be the problem.

"So you want me to go to a human orgy, where I will not be welcome, and you want us to leave before I get to enjoy myself?"

"Yes," I said, almost squeaking in my anxiety. In for a penny, in for a pound. "And . . . do you think you could pretend to be gay?"

There was a long silence.

I don't know, I just really like the series and everytime I start reading, I get bored or feel like I'm forcing the 'read. Might be timing though and my overwhelming lack of it lately. :x

You know, the more I watch the episodes, the more Jason grows on me.

lol yeah. I think the first two books were pretty interesting, then after that, I sort of just skimmed the rest by searching for "Eric" (torrented the e-books, lol) since he's, by far, the most interesting character.

I just don't like the books because they're told in first person, so you only get Sookie's point of view. The shows definitely did a lot with fleshing out the rest of the characters.

Plus, Sookie gets on my nerves.

I LOVE Eric. Alan Ball said that his little fascination with Sookie (in the show) will continue, so I'm totally happy. I like Bill too and sort of like the whole Buffy/Angel/Spike thing, I think she's meant to be with him (like I believe Buffy is supposed to be with Angel). Funny, dark hair vs light hair vampire too. haha I'm always pulling Whedon out of my ass.

Sookie, in the books, gets on my nerves. In the show, not so much. Sometimes I'm a little distracted by Anna Paquin's split (her teeth), but other than that, I'm fine with her portrayal (and she won an Emmy for the role, which is cool).

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Tara. Tara is very minor in the books, so I'm glad she's more visible in the series. Plus, that actress rocks. I love the speech she gives to the fat guy in the bar about her name.

Also, sad sad sad about Lafayette. He dies early in the second novel and I'm 99% sure it's him in Andy's car at the series one end. He's one of my favorites. :(

WHAT HAPPENED.

Posted by: superstitious Sep 14 2009, 01:48 PM

MaryAnn took control of Lafayette’s mind, so he was a part of her posse as well. Not enough Eric. She held Sookie hostage (sort of) as a bargaining chip to get Sam to sacrifice himself for her “God”. Not enough Eric. Random stuff, random stuff. Queen of Louisana is the one having Eric sell V. She wants to make sure that he gets Bill to stop poking around and asking questions about it. Eric says he’ll take care of it. That’s all we see of Eric. Sam gets stabbed by Eggs (who has been doing all the heart cutting out shit this season). He looks dead. Sookie cries. She tears down all of the random monuments MaryAnn put up for the sacrifice ceremony. MaryAnn gets pissed and gives everyone a migraine. Sookies cries more than keeps tearing shit down. She runs. MaryAnn chases her. A horned beast appears. MaryAnn gets weepy. Beast stabs her in the chest with one of his horns. Sookie pouts and gives her best “I’m scared f*ckless” impression. Beast morphs into Sam, who rips MaryAnn’s black heart out. Sookie thanks Sam. Merlottes is re-opened, no one remembers anything except for those who weren’t possessed by MaryAnn. Sookie wishes people knew how special Sam is. Sam decides to find his paternal parents. End of episode shows Bill being taken, but the person taking him is not being shown. Right before that he proposes to Sookie, who freaks out and skimpers to the ladies room. She cries and pouts in front of the mirror but decides she wants to say yes, goes out and sees that Bill is gone. Not enough Eric.

In a nut shell. I'm sure I left out a bit.

Posted by: kaijubot Sep 14 2009, 01:50 PM

ugh, eric should get a spinoff. screw the original book series.

Posted by: superstitious Sep 14 2009, 01:57 PM

Oh it's much more than that, but be warned, there is A LOT of pretty vivid sex in the first season. I don't think that it's that gory, but I watch horror films a lot so my tolerance may be different. I think it's a very good mix of this and that.

How does the first season compare to the later ones? I have no interest in the current trend of vampires and other supernatural creatures on TV/in movies, but I might give this a try if it's good enough. I need something else to watch beside Gossip Girl and Castle.

Posted by: superstitious Jun 3 2010, 04:16 PM

Honestly, I think True Blood is far superior to any vampire, hell, any supernatural series out there. It's not for the weak though - plenty of violence, sex and gore to go around. This is an Alan Ball series and he isn't shy about these things.

My personal opinion? Season two was every bit as fantastic as season one. Of course, I'm very pro-Erik and he has more of a presence in season two (he'll be even more around in season three).

I'm in the middle of re-watching Season 2. I bought the blu-ray and it came with a free Amazon On-Demand rental (my blu-ray player streams Amazon VOD), so it's been awesome.

I am loving the season 3 promos. Lots of Erik. And then, there's more Erik followed by even more Erik. And wolves.

I've never even heard of him, but I've probably seen one of his productions and didn't know; I'll IMDB him later. Thanks for your input, and for Melissa's as well.

No problem! I'm all for spreading the True Blood love.

Also, my S2 blu-ray set arrived! Commentary time. :D

Posted by: spambot Jun 4 2010, 08:30 PM

Yesss. My friend was telling me about the shiz that might go down since she's read the books. I'm pumped

Posted by: spambot Jun 4 2010, 09:04 PM

It's not exactly like the book (they have said it themselves), but I have never read the books so I don't know how they are interpreting the characters as far as if they are doing a good job or not, but it is one hell of a good show. It's only one of 2 shows I fallow (the other being house lol)

Posted by: superstitious Jun 4 2010, 09:20 PM

Ah, you know, I'd more or less consider the books a basic architecture of the series. That being said, I think that the series stays true (no pun intended) to the spirit of the books and the detours that the show takes from the books have been nothing short of excellent so far.

Rebecca makes me want to get Tru Blood... eek, four days is entirely too long.

Posted by: superstitious Jun 11 2010, 07:01 AM

Aw. I'll make sure to have a Kathleen toast. :)

I finished all of season two, including re-watching the episodes with commentary.

If you pick up the DVD or Bluray, definitely watch the Alexander Skarsgård and Stephen Moyer commentary. Those two are hilarious together. Also, the Nelsan Ellis commentary is an awesome one as well.

I've been retarded busy. :x

That scene. I don't have the words. "The f*ck?" doesn't even cover it. It's a scene skipper for me (and probably always will be). Lorena has always sort of creeped me out, I can't tell you what her mere presence on screen does to me now.

That aside, this leads to the breakup (Bill/Sookie), so I'm looking forward to some Eric action. Also, Alcide hot wolf anyone? I've always liked weres.

All in all, it's was a strong enough episode to compensate for the creepy Exorcist sex.

Posted by: spambot Jul 5 2010, 03:35 AM

and I love HBO for providing kinky vampire sex for all young and old to see.

ok, so i just skimmed through the 10th sookie stackhouse book and i'm so happy because eric and sookie are FINALLY together and have lots and lots of sex. and wtf i didnt know jason was a werepanther. i sort of might go back and read all of the books, but i dont like her writing style all that much.

Still need to watch last weeks episode.

the marriage thing was only really for show or something, i think. it was a strategic move more than anything. but eric keeps calling her "my wife" and she keeps saying "dont call me that!" its kind of cute. in book 9, she had that werewolf, alcide, and bill and eric pining after her. in book 10, i think bill and alcide are with other people, but i'm not too sure.

the twists and turns in the book are so confusing now, if the show followed the book, people would be like "what now."

but i do hope they somewhat follow the eric/bill/sookie triangle played out in the books. so far, thats the only thing that's been pretty consistent.

^ It's always a pleasure to log in and see a gorgeous picture of Alexander.

The series strays a lot from the books, but in unlike many adaptations I've seen, I LOVE the way that the show has strayed. First case in point - Lafayette. Had they not strayed, he would have been the one found dead at the end of season 1. SMART move. I don't know how I'd feel about True Blood without Lafayette.

They also increased visiblity for Tara and Jason. I also think that Jason is a more likeable character in the series than he is in the novels.

I like Bill's characterization in the series more as well. He's also more likeable. I've never been fond of Bill Compton in the novels. Eric is clearly the standout suitor.

I've even learned to like Anna Paquin's Sookie. I'm a buxom lady myself, so I have always been fond of Sookie's looks, as they are described in the novels. Paquin, while pretty in a different way does not look like the Sookie I've read about. She's far too thin and her boobs are far too small. Then again, I like big boobs. What can you do?

They've actually padded her shorts and her Merlotte's t-shirt to try to give her more of an "oomph," haha.

Yeah, Lorena creeps me out, too! It's so weird seeing an interview with the actress, as she's completely different. Well, same goes for Bill, heh.

Ha! I wondered why her booty looked good in those shorts.

The actress is actually quite plain to me, but in a pretty way (plain isn't always bad). I also think that the guy who plays Bill looks better outside of the series.

I have no complaints about Alcide. He looks awesome.

I liked the A/S pairing. Probably because it was a minute long. I love the actor they chose because he's attractive, but not in your face attractive. He's got a subtle, rugged quality that I most enjoy.

That lady's commentary almost makes like Lorena. Almost.

Not putting spoiler tags, since it's been 3 days since the episode aired.

Lots of good moments this ep - Eric and Talbot, wow. Being staked like that is awful but the scene was so delicious. The end with Sookie/Bill I could have passed on. I'm ready for a new dynamic. I would like to see her have some action with Alcide, then Eric for a while.

Debbie cracks me up. I'm so glad she wasn't killed off. No Pam though this episode. I love Pam. :(

Also, yay Jessica time!

Yeah, I liked the whole Fellowship of the Sun thing (to an extent) but the whole vampire/human war isn't interesting enough to drag on.

Speaking of completely uninteresting - Crystal. They paired one of my favorites (Jason) with the most annoying, whining, and quite frankly, the least attractive semi-season regular I've seen.

I liked the Newlins. haha Those two last year cracked me up.

It's Felton that makes Jason a werepanther and they could definitely go in that direction with True Blood, since the character has been introduced already as Crystal's fiance. I think that's Felton. I can't understand a f*cking thing that girl says sometimes.

Posted by: karmakiller Jun 27 2011, 09:41 PM

I really didn't like the first episode of the season, but it got better with the second episode. Eric's sneaking up on Sookie in the first episode was creepy, but oddly sexy. I am looking forward to more Pam awesomeness, though.

Posted by: superstitious Jul 14 2011, 08:54 PM

All caught up now. I'll skip around.

LOVE Eric. There isn't enough Eric in this universe. Alexander Skarsgård is great at playing stunned (great at playing everything I've seen of him really). He even makes Sookie seem likeable.

f*ck pimp Bill Compton. I'm not much of a fan regardless, but his screen times are my bathroom breaks. That being said, he's actually looking better this season than the last couple of seasons. Perhaps if he just stands there and doesn't speak.

HATE the new, cleaner Debbie. She was more interesting white trashy. I love Alicide though.

What the hell was with the she-panther raping scene? Jesus. That's more foul than last year's Lorena head twisting sex scene.

What the f*ck are they doing to my Hoyt/Jessica? :(

What the f*ck is with that creepy ass doll?

Can someone please kill Tommy already? I liked that kid better in Prison Break.

:( RIP fairy godmother.

Also, snarky Lafayette is missed right now. And please, no more braids. Last episode is the first time in 3 seasons I thought he looked silly. Jesus, you are hot.

Marnie = Aunt Petunia. Weird.

I forgot how much one week seems too long to wait between episodes.

I think a lot of people were worried about the amnesia part of the story, but if anyone can carry that story line, it's Skarsgard (and I think it's really just proof of his acting skills). Eric said "sorry" like 5 times in the last episode, haha.

I have no idea where the Jessica/Hoyt thing is going. When I saw them fighting I was like nooooo.

I don't think Debbie will stay clean for long, so I don't mind her cleaner image as long as it doesn't take up a lot of screen time.

A year passed and Jason is still hanging out with the werepanthers. I really, really hate that story line. That last rape scene was really disturbing.

At least amnesia Eric isn't acting like a completely different Eric. I loved the scene with Pam (although the feet washing thing was weird...) and the fact that he drained Sookie's fairy godmother. His expressions are priceless.

I just caught up on all the episodes last night. I have been kind of dreading the whole memory loss thing, but Eric is still hilarious.

Still really f*cking hate Tera. She acts like she the only person who has had shit happen to her. gtfo

Don't really like the whole demon baby thing...

Bill looks way better this season, though I hope he doesn't turn into to much of a d bag. "you scuffed my shoe....TRUE DEATH"

She's always had that boney ass body. I think she always ends up looking silly when she is trying to be sexy

thought she was more muscular though - that's just my opinion.
