YAY more contributors!

Carrie that colour looks lovely - what'd you use?

Yan lin - I use a fluorescent desk lamp

Yes mine's Hello Kitty too, and looks almost exactly like that XD. I tilt the head so it shines directly in my face, then take the photos with a digital camera. I keep it at Macro, no flash, but all other settings are default. You just have to make sure that when you're taking the picture, your hand isn't blocking the light from the lamp and you get a shadow.

Posted by: hi-C Sep 14 2008, 04:09 PM

Oooh, fluorescent desk lamp, I'm gonna have to remember that for later.

And thanks, Gigi happy.gif I used four different colors: a dark purple ("Purple Silk," The Body Shop) on my lid line (although it doesn't really look like it), a bright green ("Sprout," MAC) and bright gold ("Eldorado," Urban Decay) on my lids and a lighter gold ("Gold Chiffon," The Body Shop) right near my eyebrow. And then smudged it all together with my finger.

For the first one I used ZA 101 over the lid and 107 gold below the brow
and Mac Electric Eel on the lid. Lined with black, smudged around a bit. Also lined with gold pencil shadow... forget what brand.

The bottom was just straight up wet n wild eye pencil biggrin.gif In this periwinkle blue color. +fake eyelashes lol.

Hm, I love colored eye-shadow, but they tend to make me look like a clown, so I usually just stick to naturals.

lol, the nailpolish is me being stupid at Sephora and trying out one of the orange shades ><

I'm pretty sure I'm using some Duane Reade brand eyeshadow I bought because it was dirt cheap. And eyeliner & mascara are some shade of brown from Maybelline

Hm, you can barely see the eyeshadow, but it's a combo from the "Meet the Stones" Bare Minerals pack. And eyeliner & mascara are probably something from a convenient store.

And I only show one eye because I was born with a birth defect that makes my left eye stupid.

prettyyyy. I haven't worn makeup in so long. hahahha.

Posted by: espressive Oct 10 2008, 06:34 PM

gigi, i love the goldish brown shade! what did you use? i seriously think i'm gonna go get it. i can never find a good gold color that isn't tacky and i really like how natural it plus i'm a fan of sparkles =) it looks like you used at least 3 shades right? the goldish one by the tearduct, the light brown in the corners and i think a reddish brown above that? oh and plus the white highlight under your brows? good blend! looks.

Posted by: Gigi Oct 11 2008, 04:44 PM

^ Pretty much. I used 4 shades though. Light pale, frosty yellow in the inner corner, mid-tone orangey-gold in the middle, coppery colour in the outer corner, plus a matte brown in the crease. Under the brows I used a satin cream colour, and then a pop of the pale frosty yellow I used in the inner corner RIGHT under the arch of the brow.

Which goldish brown shade are you talking about? Since the shadows I used are different from what you thought they were, I'm not sure what area of the eye you're talking about. Tell me and I can suggest what to use. :D

Most of the shadows I used were cheapo ones though, or very old eyeshadows, and hard to find. I could suggest a few alternatives though.

Oh, and it's probably helpful to note that I used a gold cream eyeshadow underneath it all as a base.

Thanks!

Posted by: espressive Oct 13 2008, 12:36 AM

i like the satin creme color right under the arch of the brows & the yellow-gold in the inner corner & the matte brown by the crease! have any suggestions on where to get those colors?

and please enlighten me on how to apply eyeshadow as an lower eyeliner cause it also turns out weird/the eyeshadow flakes. i think it's just the brush i'm using. i use a sonia kashuk angled eyeshadow brush?

Posted by: Gigi Oct 13 2008, 12:46 AM

I used MAC eyeshadow in Vanilla for the satin cream colour.

Matte brown is pretty easy to get anywhere, the one I used was pretty neutral toned (i.e., not a lot of red in it). I might suggest MAC eyeshadow in Espresso for that.

Yellow-gold, maybe Ricepaper by MAC?

I suggested all MAC products because I'm pretty familiar with them, plus I know it'll be easy to find. Of course there are a lot of alternatives, so don't think those are the only ones you can use. I'm sorry I can't recommend the exact colours I used because they're impossible to find online or anywhere now (I tried!).

I've never really experienced eyeshadow flaking so I'm not really sure what you're talking about - do you mean like, the powder goes everywhere? Maybe use an eyeshadow base on your lower lashline - either an actual eyeshadow base or some sort of cream eyeshadow, anything "sticky". I used the tip of a flat eyeshadow brush for the lower lashes, but an angle brush should work. Try dabbing the shadow on instead of sweeping it across.

Posted by: espressive Oct 14 2008, 12:33 AM

omg.gif you have just introduced me to a new realm of cosmetics! i now want to buy every single shade of eyeshadow that mac has to offer... they're all so pretty! and i'm only shopping online - imagine what i'll be like when i'm in an actual mac store! so instead of buying like a bunch of eyeshadows, i was looking at the eyeshadow suite. how about http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/shade.tmpl?SKU_ID=SKU30775 maybe?

i don't own any cream shadows cause they always creased very easily, but i'll try the dabbing idea! i think i might just not have the right features for that. like your lower lash line is more inset than mine so it looks really good. erhm it's a hard feature to describe, but it's a good thing! =] i usually don't wear anything on my lower lash line for that reason. if anything, i'll put on top eyeliner. speaking of, i'm running out. perhaps i'll get a mac eyeliner lol.
i'm just gonna go on a mac extravaganza. thanks for the suggestions!!

Posted by: Gigi Oct 14 2008, 12:46 AM

Don't let online pictures fool you! MAC product photos are infamously deceiving. They're never the same in person =_=.

The Suite Array shadows have been getting crappy reviews, but you never know until you really go and try them. Sweet Liaison looks like an appropriate colour though.

http://pics.livejournal.com/karlasugar/pic/0000cebq
^for swatches

Yeah cream shadows crease for me too, not unless I use Urban Decay Primer Potion! :D Love that stuff to death. I would recommend it to anybody.

I'm glad I fueled your MAC addiction (maybe? LOL). Check out http://specktra.net if you're really into it. The ladies over there are very, very helpful.

I want the Manish Arora stuff just for the packaging. ph34r.gif

Posted by: misoshiru Oct 14 2008, 01:58 AM

well, they're still online, so I'm assuming that they still have them at the stores. haha, a lot of the manish arora stuff is sold out already though. D: but i wasn't a huge fan of their colors.

Posted by: Gigi Oct 14 2008, 02:00 AM

I know, it sold out in like 2 days! I wasn't a fan of the colours either (when am I going to wear yellow eyeshadow and bright orange blush?!) but the packaging was purty.

http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY31026&PRODUCT_ID=PROD10342

Yan lin - Very nice! I wish I could pull off dark colours. I always look like I got hit in the face, or really bitchy LOL.

ugh. I really want to get MSF but I hear it only works for some people.

Posted by: Gigi Oct 26 2008, 12:45 AM

^ Some people have complained about it breaking them out. I find that it's okay. If you don't use too much of it, it looks quite natural because it's very sheer.

Oh I also used MAC Mineralize blush in Nuance if that's what you meant by what I used on my face, Irene.

Posted by: espressive Oct 26 2008, 01:14 AM

QUOTE(Gigi @ Oct 26 2008, 12:45 AM) *
Oh I also used MAC Mineralize blush in Nuance if that's what you meant by what I used on my face, Irene.

no i meant the Skinfinish Natural thing you were talking about :-p i'll look into that! i think i steered away from powder cause it comes off really easily (okay nasty example, but if i blew my nose, the powder will come off on the kleenex) so then i used liquid cause it blended better... but i walked past a MAC store today and couldn't stop staring at all the lovely cosmetics!

i wanted to get an eyeliner with my shadows, but i couldnt decide on which type/shade. i've narrowed the shades down to prunella (dark purplish) & teddy (brownish). any recommendations on the type of eyeliner? i didn't get the difference between the kohl and whatnot.

Posted by: Gigi Oct 26 2008, 01:23 AM

I can't, for the life of me, use liquid foundation unless I've exfoliated my skin like twice. And vigorously. I have these patches on my cheeks (they're not even dry patches, I have NO IDEA what they are), and they are greatly accentuated by liquid foundation. I have no idea why this happens. So I'm pretty much limited to powder. Plus I have oily skin, so it all works out.

I can't really recommend you eyeliner because I hardly use it (smudges like a mofo on me). So I'm not even well-informed about eyeliner, because I don't care about it. I've heard Urban Decay's 24/7 liners are AWESOME though, apparently they are very long-lasting and glide on smoothly. It depends on what you'd like your eyeliner to do...

Between the two I'd get Teddy since you would get more use out of it, especially if you don't have any eyeliner to begin with.

Posted by: misoshiru Oct 26 2008, 01:31 AM

liquid foundation works on me. but i use both. :X

and I prefer to buy liquid liners because pencil does not stay on me (other than MAC's dualedge liner). You should try MAC's liquidlast liner, because that shit works really well.

Posted by: Gigi Oct 26 2008, 01:35 AM

I have MAC Fluidline too. I think gel liners, in general, are much easier to use than liquid liner, and are quite long-lasting.

Posted by: espressive Oct 26 2008, 01:43 AM

^ i think i'm gonna try that, cause i need like a powder to set in the liquid creme. otherwise my face looks just a tad shiny.

liquid liners are too harsh on me (tho they do stay very well!). and i don't know, it just doesn't look good... probably cause i've only used a clinique creme liner and a crappy covergirl one. the creme liner smudges like crazy, as do most eyeliners for me. i ALWAYS get a faint eyeliner mark on my crease from blinking and it looks retarded. i've been trying to find a eyeliner that battles this annoying problem (currently i use http://www.lancome-usa.com/makeup/eye-pencils-and-liners/le-stylo-waterproof.htm#anchor001 in prune, but it ran out. it works the best so far) but i'm starting to think that it's just my stupid eyes pinch.gif yes, i have tried setting the eyeliner by dabbing eyeshadow on it after application - it doesn't work.

Posted by: Gigi Oct 26 2008, 01:52 AM

I get the liner mark on my crease too, but only if I draw my liner too thick. Your crease could be different from mine though. If you have a pretty thin crease, maybe try doing your liner thicker, up to the point where any creasing would just blend into the actual liner...if that made sense.

The only way eyeliner doesn't crease is if I use a primer underneath (Urban Decay Primer Potion), and setting it with eyeshadow on top. Although lately I've just been using eyeshadow straight-up as a liner.

If it REALLY REALLY bothers you, try using an eyeliner sealant like Benefit's Shelaq.

and since Sandy doesn't get my eye "defect"... this is the only picture where you can sorta see it. People say they don't notice it until I point it out, but that's probably because I have side-bangs to cover that shit up.

My left eye (to the right) is single-lidded while my right eye is double. -_-. makes me super self-conscious.

^ I now understand what you mean about being self-conscious. My allergies have now made my right eye have hundreds of folds (or no folds at all on some days) while my left one looks totally normal.

Posted by: espressive Nov 4 2008, 02:53 AM

^ stop rubbing them! & take non-drowsy allergy meds! & use ice packs (esp in the morning)!

it works, i tell you! this was my remedy routine after my eyes were like that for 2 weeks... except both my eyelids had like a ten folds each. i looked spectacular those 2 weeks haha

Posted by: Joannnnnne Nov 4 2008, 03:08 AM

I try very hard not to rub them and I take a Reactine pill every morning. And I don't use ice packs because usually when my eye feels like shit and has a bunch of folds, it also gets kinda pink-eye-ish, so I have to used boiled water to sooth it. Thus making it puffier.

See Joanne. EVEN THIS STRANGER GIRL TELLS YOU NOT TO RUB YOUR EYES! LISTEN TO THE WISE GIRL! XD

Melissa, that happens to me a lot. Not to your extent, but sometimes I get like 3 folds in one eye and one reeeeeeally undetectable one in the other. Pisses me off. You could probably make your eyes look more even by making your eyeliner thicker on the single-lidded side, up to the point where your eyeliner reaches on your double-lidded side if that made any sense. It'll create the illusion of more even eyes I suppose.

Or eyelid tape but I hate that shit. Anyway your "defect" (lol...no) is unique. :D

Posted by: espressive Nov 4 2008, 03:13 AM

why don't you put wet drops in? or take a hot shower?

then use the ice packs! =] seriously, ice packs does wonders. i use it on/off for like 20 minutes in the morning and my mound-of-fat of an eyelid heals instantly!

Posted by: Joannnnnne Nov 4 2008, 03:18 AM

I've tried using eye drops, but they just screw up my eye even more. And I can't take hot showers because my skin is very sensitive to it. Yes, my health is super f**ked up.

Anyway, enough about my eyes. LOL

lol, yeah, I usually do my makeup to hide it, but I've been getting lazy, lately. Most people don't even know what I'm talking about when I describe my "defect" so I guess that's a good thing, right?

I'm getting surgery on that eye as soon as I'm 21.

But what kind of pale lipstick? Like nude? And since I'm, you know, chocolaty, it makes it hard to pick that stuff out.

Posted by: Gigi Nov 4 2008, 02:08 PM

^ You could use a little concealer with some gloss on top to get the pale look without having to get a pale lipstick. Just a tiiinnny bit though.

Posted by: hi-C Nov 4 2008, 02:15 PM

Hmm... Interesting. I might have to try that out. I never thought about using face stuff on my lips. Thanks, Gigi! =D

Posted by: Gigi Nov 4 2008, 02:38 PM

That's what they did at one of the oooold Gucci runway shows. Black smokey eyes + pale concealered lips FTW, says Tom Ford.

Posted by: hi-C Nov 4 2008, 02:47 PM

I've never been able to do the smokey eye, mainly because eyeliner and me don't get along well. I hate putting it on, I never do it right, and when I think I do it right, it doesn't show up. That might because I have (had) cheap ass eyeliner.

Posted by: misoshiru Nov 4 2008, 02:52 PM

I know people use concealer or foundation on their lips first and then use a paler/nude lipstick on top.

I've been into bright lips and nude eyes lately.

Posted by: ----- Nov 4 2008, 03:03 PM

Hm. I love the Bourjois glosses.

I think this is the color I have, too - rose a l'eau

I usually wear that or something clear. If I'm going out, I usually wear this pear color by Estee Lauder:

So yeah, I'm pretty into light/pale lip colors. If I go dark or bright, I look really gaudy -_-.

I focus more on the eyes, though, lol.

I think these pictures are from various nights of going out last year:

Question: how y'all clean your brushes?

Posted by: Gigi Nov 9 2008, 12:34 AM

In between uses I use MAC Brush Cleanser. I take a piece of tissue and put a few drops of the brush cleanser on it, then swirl the bristles into it. When I'm out of brush cleanser though, sometimes I just use water-based eye makeup remover.

Every month or so I'll wash them with a little bit of shampoo. Just make sure that when you rinse them, don't do it with the brush ferrule pointing up or else the water can trickle down the bristles and mess up the glue.

What if my eye makeup remover is glycerin-based? (I think it's glycerin-based.) Is that safe to use?

Posted by: Gigi Nov 9 2008, 12:59 AM

I have no idea, but I think it'd be fine. A lot of mixing mediums that you can use with brushes are glycerin-based, so it certainly wouldn't do anything harmful to them.

Ah okay. Thanks, Gigi happy.gif Such an expert.

Also, any recommendations as far as foundations go? The one I'm currently using is Clinique Perfectly Real but it makes my skin REALLLLY greasy and after a few hours it starts to look like I'm wearing a mask.

Posted by: Gigi Nov 9 2008, 02:20 AM

Foundation is a pretty personal thing though, so I'm not really sure what I could recommend you, except to always look for a formula that's oil-free, or even one that's especially for oily skin. Look for words like "matte" and "oil-control" as opposed to "dewy" and "glowing". On the Clinique site, you can even browse foundations by your skin type.

Without recommending you a foundation though, there are a few things you can do. These have worked for me:

- Use a primer before foundation but after moisturizer. Something with silicone, dimethicone, any "-cones" will instantly mattify the skin and help keep oil in check. I'm thinking Smashbox Photofinish Primer right now, but amazingly enough, http://usa.adflakes.com/index.php/view+classifieds/id/12170/The+Truth+About+Monistat+Chafing+Powder+Gel+as+a+MakeUp+Primer+ works the same way. You're probably like, shit Gigi, you want me to put that on my face?! I promise you that it's fine XD. And it's relatively cheap! I don't use it too often though in case it DOES do something weird, like clog my pores or w/e.

- Might seem obvious, but cleanse and moisturize before putting on foundation. If you don't moisturize, your skin could overcompensate for your dry skin by producing more oil.

- Set any cream or liquid foundation with a light dusting of powder.

- Apply as little product as possible. I find that if I use too much foundation, it gets seriously nasty. Try using a sponge to apply it so it goes on more sheer.

- Oil blotting papers, or even brown Starbucks napkins in a pinch to blot the mess away :D

Here's a great thread on Specktra with tons of suggestions:

Only use Monistat if you don't have oily/acne prone skin. Monistat creates some sort of "barrier" on your skin; this is what allows your skin to be matte because it's trapping the oils in your skin. However, this doesn't allow your skin to breathe. Many people have experienced break outs from Monistat. So be careful!

Otherwise, it's a pretty good (and cheap! thumbsup.gif) alternative to the high brand primers.

Btw, I love how you do your makeup Gigi.

i've never used clinique foundation. but you can try putting http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY15108&PRODUCT_ID=PROD1430 over your foundation, which will absorb the oil in your face so your skin isnt shiny looking.

Yeah that's why I said not to use it all the time, but if you ever need your makeup to last longer for an occasion or whatnot, it's the way to go :). Personally I've never experienced breakouts but it could be because I use it so rarely. And thanks!

I've never heard of anyone using it, but it would definitely help with creasing. But like I said, Urban Decay Primer Potion is the best shizz out there. I have super oily lids and this prevents ALL creasing, and also makes eyeshadows more vibrant. This is the only thing that has ever worked for me.

Carrie suggested concealer, but only use that if you have dry lids because that can crease really easily.

my new favorite must-have is the L'Oreal Colour Juice Stick Sheer Light Lucious. it has the color of a lipstick, but the moisture of a lip balm. say goodbye to chapped lips and hair-stuck-to-your-face-lipgloss cause this is amazing. there's an array of gorgeous colors to pick from with silly names. or if you just want a slight tint, i got the shade "Chai Love You", which offers just the faintest touch of color :D TRY THIS, LADIES! you can find it at Target, Jewel, Walgreen's, and pretty much any drug store. they're about $8 i think? i got mine on sale for $4 at Walgreen's thumbsup.gif

I just got the Urban Decay 24/7 liner mini set in VIP and here's me messing around with them. THEY'RE SO PRETTY!:

Posted by: Joannnnnne Nov 20 2008, 12:01 AM

How are you able to get the lines so perfectly even?!

Posted by: Gigi Nov 20 2008, 12:04 AM

Usually I'm pretty bad with liner, like I have to go REEALLY slow or fix with a Q-tip afterwards. But damn, it's because these liners are awesome and just gliiiide on, so you don't have to really tug to try to get the colour to come out. Plus they're already nicely sharpened.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Right now I'm still wearing the liner and seeing if they smudge on me or not - if they don't, these are definitely my holy grail eyeliners.

Haha, I was going to ask the same thing. I'm terrible with liquid liners, but liquid liner doesn't look very good with the shape of my eyes, even when applied correctly.

^ Post post away!

'k so the UD 24/7 liners are officially the best liners I've ever tried.

I used the copper-ish colour today, with just a tiny dusting of translucent powder on top, and NO SMUDGING WHATSOEVER, and even after 8+ hours. You probably don't understand how important of a revelation this is for me. ALL. PENCIL. LINERS. SMUDGE. ON. ME. And this one does not. I am so very impressed.

Need to buy the other colours now!!!

really I have no technique when it comes to eyeliner. I just started from the inner corner, drew along my top lashline, then flicked out lightly near the end. It's easy because this liner is so smooth.

Posted by: misoshiru Nov 21 2008, 01:09 PM

damn. this might mean that I'll have to invest in UD liners too. I don't use pencil because it all smudges, and I've gotten used to liquid.

Posted by: heartquasm Nov 21 2008, 01:32 PM

ahh, i'm a little late, but i LOVE urban decay's 24/7 liners. i bought the bourbon liner a little over a year ago and it's a dreeeam.

Posted by: Kay- Nov 21 2008, 05:31 PM

Ok the pictures don't do the make up much justice but i tried doing the flourecent light thing and i just looked like a ghost =/

I used:
Smashbox tinted moisturizer
Lise Waters liquide liner
Lancome long lasting waterproof eyeliner (black)
Lancome Hypnose waterproof mascara (black)
Clinique soft pressed blush (plum gorgeous)
Clinique colour surge eye shadow duo (like mink)
Loreal perle (turquoise)
And just some black eyeshadow

Posted by: misoshiru Nov 21 2008, 07:12 PM

need more on the eyes.

Are you sure you used all that? NO way - how can you have used all that? huh.gif I am no make-up expert, but I also agree that you need more on the eyes and you need to make it more even. The left eye doesn't match the right eye, and you need to blend more because the color just runs poorly, that all. The mascara looks good though - nice. Oh man though, I really do love Lancome mascara, even though I've only worn mine twice. :P

I tried out the pallet at the store and fell in looooove. I've never found a set where I'd actually wear all the colors, but this is perfect for me. Pictures later :D

But pictures should show off the makeup though. :P

I wish I had some instructions on how to do those smokey eyes perfectly. Cute palette, Melz!

Posted by: Gigi Nov 22 2008, 08:29 PM

^ I find that cameras don't ever do justice to what makeup looks like. You have to a heavy hand just to get the colours to show up even a little bit. I had to try out a lot of different settings and types of lighting to get anything to show.

To be honest I never wear that much eye makeup on a daily basis, only for a special event. In the pictures it looks pretty natural but in real person it's actually a LOT. Normally I'd just wear some powder, very natural eyeshadow, maybe eyeliner, mascara and blush. If I took a picture of myself on a regular day, you probably wouldn't be able to see any of it.

I think I have finally mastered the smokey eye, but I have nowhere to wear it to! I will rock it one day at a party or something. Stila has some cool "Talking" palettes (there's one for smokey eyes) that gives you step by step instructions, although I find them pretty useless. Youtube tutorials ftw. ;)

Mel that palette looks great. I want to try out the Urban Decay palettes too, they always come with a lot of great colours.

Carrie, I love the lips as well!!

Posted by: Joannnnnne Nov 22 2008, 08:44 PM

^ Teach me the smokey eye! I want smokey eyes!!! Flora always makes her eyes somewhat smokey, but her way of doing it doesn't really end up being smokey for me. She uses a shimmery brown eyeshadow as a base on her eyelids, and then a darker brown eyeshadow to make a thickish line above the eyelash and a thinner line on her bottom lid. And then she uses a black eyeliner and draws a thin line over the dark brown.

Posted by: Kay- Nov 22 2008, 08:49 PM

^Omg im jealous! Whenever I tried to do the smokey eye, I end up looking like a big black buggy eyed freak hahaha!

Posted by: Gigi Nov 22 2008, 08:56 PM

How does Flora do it?

I'll totally teach you how I'll do it. I'll even try it on you! :D But remember, the last time I asked, you didn't want me to touch your eyes. :(

Posted by: Joannnnnne Nov 22 2008, 08:57 PM

Whoops, just edited my post haha. And ^ probably because my eyes were super crappy at the time? I'll totally let you do my eyes next time. =]

Posted by: Gigi Nov 22 2008, 09:02 PM

I was so confused at first, then I looked at your PREVIOUS post. Alright. You know what we need to do? Another makeover day. A real one. HAHAHA

That sounds a lot like how I do it in terms of colour placement anyway. I usually line my upper lashline with a pencil, smudge it out a looot. Then go over it with a dark shadow, blending it out. I use a midtone to dark shadow above that up to my crease, then a midtoned to light colour in the crease. Highlight browbone with a light colour.

What a shitty explanation.

When you said it doesn't turn out smokey for you...what did you mean by that?

Posted by: Joannnnnne Nov 22 2008, 09:04 PM

Maybe it's because I don't make the lines thick enough, but it just ends up looking like I just used eyeliner and that's it. LOL.

i've only ever used too faced eyeshadows and i like them a lot! i think the colors are a lot more practical and muted compared to urban decay, but i like the way urban decay goes on better. however, too faced is a tiny bit cheaper if you take into account the amount of makeup they offer per dollar charged (i.e. UD 2.8g eyeshadow is $18 whereas TF 2.8 g eyeshadow is $17, lol). not enough to make a difference, though.

if you're gonna get a set, i think too faced is better. you end up using more of the colors than in a urban decay set.

I have a few of the L'Oreal HIP shadows and I used to use them when I was into bright colored eyes. But now that I've gone boring and like neutral eyes, I don't use them anymore. However, they are really pigmented and I know of a lot of MAC makeup artists who use those as cheap dupes

Well I guess it all started the first time I went through the second grade. I caught my reflection in a spoon while I was eating my cereal, and I remember thinking "wow, you're ridiculously good looking, maybe you could do that for a career." Then I realized that it might not be too terribly fulfilling, so instead I decided on going to college. I was in theater in high school and middle school, and early on in my career I would do my own make up and tailoring. It's just a little something I like to do, so every now and then I whip out the kit and see what I can do!

I'm paying 30 dollars for 120 e/s! So excited. And Youtube reviews have good reviews; so does MUA. I'm mostly a beginner but once I get a hang of more complicated looks, I'm going to invest in Coastal Scent's Neutral Palette.

SO EXCITED!

only $21? o.O

shit, i sort of want it. when you try it on, tell me how the colors go on. big pallets like this usually tend to disappoint me :(
Oh shit. I want it.

Posted by: Comptine Dec 10 2008, 10:41 AM

I paid my shipment and I should get the palette soon. I opted for the 120 palette because the coastal scents 88 palette is all shimmer. This one has matte, shimmer and some pearl =) I'll definitely do some swatches if you want to see.

I'm just a little worried because I didn't get insurance (it was half the cost of the actual product and the shipping/handling was more than the actual product). Hopefully, if it does get damaged, it would only be cracked and easily repressable.

Posted by: Gigi Dec 10 2008, 05:05 PM

^ The CS 88 palette has a matte version, actually I'm sure that was the original palette. Then they came out with the 88 shimmer.

Matte (although they never really describe it as matte, just "not very shimmery", but I hear from other people that it's pretty much just matte.

Not the best pic cause the lighting is messed but yeh. It's my attempt at a Cranberry gold look (inspired by PurseBuzz on youtube lol). So yeah. I really like it but this pic doesn't do it justice. =p

Love it Steph! The colors work really well together and with your skin tone. I need to get some good blending brushes.

Testing out my Clinique smudge pot eyeliner. YAY!!! And have some Sephora Limited Edition lipstick. Oooh, and with Covergirl Mascara, the one for specific eyecolors.

Posted by: Comptine Jan 9 2009, 06:38 PM

Rachel, how do you like the cream eyeliner? And you have gorgeous eyes, btw.

I've been testing my new wunderfullll palette.

Layer 1 (

Layer 2 (which I have yet to use)

I've been using the browns the most. I played around and smoked out my most commonly used look. The blending could be better.

Posted by: Gigi Jan 10 2009, 11:06 PM

^OOH the marbly colours look so cool. The last row in the top layer has me droolin'. I love neutrals. I reeeeally want that neutral palette from Coastal Scents! Ugh and you have such nice bone structure.

Steph, I swear Cranberry just looks great on you!

Love the lipstick, Rachel! With the liner it looks so retro and gorgeous. You do have very pretty eyes. /jealous

Playing with my new MAC stuff. Huge-ass picture alert.

Eyes: combination of a few random browns + purples, and new Femme-Fi (LOVE THIS. Best. Highlighter. Colour. Ever.) And of course I used my new brush, the 226!
Cheeks: Nuance mineralize blush + new Redhead MSF
Lips: The redder one is the new Strawberry Blonde lipglass, the lighter one is Live and Dye lipglass. Dunno when I will ever wear the dark pink/red one but it is very pretty! It's also not as neon-looking as it is in the first pic.

Corny picture, but it really shows off the MSF well. :)

Posted by: Comptine Jan 10 2009, 11:32 PM

Thanks =)

The marbly colors are amazing. Very bright and multi-dimensional even after blending. The browns are what I use the most. There's one that gives me a yellowish tint that's weird but I keep forgetting which one. The shimmer is amazing.

Love the Live and Dye lip glass. I think the eye look works great with both lip colors. Flawless like always, btw.

Hate that my eyelashes don't curl... an eyelash perm sounds great thumbsup.gif

Posted by: Joannnnnne Jan 27 2009, 01:30 AM

I'm getting kind of annoyed with my eyelashes now... the ones on my left eye are a little bit more curled than the ones on my right, so it looks kind of unbalanced. And it gets really frustrating when I have my glasses on because my left lashes touch the lens and it feels funny. stubborn.gif

Posted by: gojira Jan 27 2009, 03:58 AM

lol i have a habit of plucking my eyelashes and i like the noise it makes. is eyelash perm the shit where they glue each individual lash to your eyelashes? shit, i had that for two weeks before it started irritating the crap out of me. though they told me not to, i ended up waking up in the middle of the night to pluck every single one out.

Posted by: Joannnnnne Jan 27 2009, 04:01 AM

^ Gahh, that sounds somewhat painful!! No, the eyelash perm I got involved some rod/stick and some thing that looked like saran wrap. I think they just put some chemical on my lashes and rolled them up. It smelled like a hair salon afterward. =\

yo im tired of waiting

f*cking juna needs to post his makeup pics

Posted by: Gigi Jan 27 2009, 04:16 AM

You. Pluck. Your. Eyelashes...? That freaks the hell out of me LOL.

oh okay I read it wrong, you plucked out your individual ones that you got put in. I think those are called eyelash extensions or sth, and they're semi-permanent. It's too much of a pain for me, seeing as how you have to be suuuuper gentle and you can't use mascara (WTF?). Yeah.

Posted by: gojira Jan 27 2009, 04:25 AM

lol they say you no longer need mascara. it does somewhat make a difference if you have nonexistent eyelashes like me. girls are critical so most will notice. the most annoying part was showering because the eyelashes tend to droop down.

i do pluck my real eyelashes. i always feel like there is something in my eye. instead of rubbing them like normal people, i have a tendency to pluck.

Posted by: Joannnnnne Jan 27 2009, 04:31 AM

^ Dude, the plucking sounds really scary. Does/did it hurt?

Has anyone ever cut/trimmed/snipped their eyelashes? My mom said she cut my sister and my eyelashes when we were babies to help them grow faster.......................... so dangerous.

Posted by: gojira Jan 27 2009, 04:35 AM

nope. oh i don't use tweezer or anything. just fingers. man i should do a video so you can listen to the noise too but it might gross you guys out.

Posted by: Gigi Jan 27 2009, 04:38 AM

I have never intentionally cut/trimmed/plucked/removed any of my eyelashes. It sounds scary, and plus I don't want to lose what little length I have.

LOL the noise. I'm curious. I'm imagining this weird twang sound.

Posted by: espressive Jan 27 2009, 09:38 PM

I LOVE THAT SECOND PICTURE GRR. Sexyy ;) love your brows too!

Hmm, cheap brushes that are good...I remember the first ever makeup brushes I bought were from Costco...Borghese I think? There were like 12 brushes under $25 CND. They're not amazing in quality but great for the price. I love the big eyeshadow brush in that one - it's so soft! They come out with a new one every year, and the one this year had a bunch of synthetic bristle brushes.

If not check out the Sonia Kashuk brushes at Target (personally have not tried because I don't live near a Target but heard great things about them), Eco Tools (I think that's the name) with the synthetic bristles + bamboo handles which I'm sure they sell at Target too.

If you want to get serious about your cheap brushes then check out http://www.crownbrush.biz/and the ones from http://www.coastalscents.com/cfwebstore/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=37 (Crown Brushes supplies Coastal Scents so they're essentially the same brushes).

gigi, sonia kashuk brushes are real good quality cheap brushes.

Posted by: Comptine Feb 1 2009, 02:24 PM

Rachel, you look like a hot librarian type. Lol.

I have some Essence of Beauty brushes from CVS. The face brushes aren't so great but the eyeshadow brushes are really good.

I've heard really good things about Loew Cornell which are actually artistry brushes but are soft enough for makeup. And they are only a few dollars each.

Posted by: misoshiru Feb 1 2009, 02:44 PM

Some people use paint brushes instead of makeup brushes.

Posted by: Gigi Feb 1 2009, 04:26 PM

I would try that except I have no idea where a nearby craft store is. I don't want to spend money on a 239 brush from MAC if I can get one for like $3.00 at Michael's.

He goes into more detail about it ;)

Posted by: Comptine Feb 1 2009, 04:27 PM

I was just watching that a few nights ago to get some info on Loew Cornell.

I got like 5 art stores near me. Might go check them out soon.

Posted by: misoshiru Feb 1 2009, 04:50 PM

yep. just need to feel the bristles on art brushes.

Posted by: Comptine Feb 1 2009, 04:56 PM

This should be in wishlist but too lazy to go there.

What it claims: Apply this morning and night for longer lashes. Protects your lashes throughout the day, hydrating them and providing them with greater firmness. Apply before using an eyelash curler to give your lashes a longer-lasting curl. Can also be used as a base for your mascara, increasing volume and helping application of mascara. Transparent, so won't affect the color of your eyelashes.

Apparently, it works.

Posted by: misoshiru Feb 1 2009, 05:31 PM

I have that one! I have so much makeup...

But I have such a hard time finding foundation because I have oily/acne-prone skin and dark under-eye circles.. So when I put on concealer, the foundation just rubs it off. Its so annoying. And you can never trust those department store ladies because they will say anything to get you to buy their products.

Posted by: Gigi Feb 8 2009, 03:01 AM

Try putting concealer on first then. Usually people advise to do concealer last since foundation tends to rub off the concealer, but since you're having the reverse problem...

Or revise how you're putting on foundation/concealer in the first place. How are you applying it?

Well, I blot my concealer on under my eyes and on little blemishes.. then I add my foundation on with a foundation brush. Then set it with a powder.
I really think it is my makeup.. cause it NEVER stays on all day.. by the end of the day my face looks all oily and red.

Posted by: Gigi Feb 8 2009, 04:31 AM

It just sounds like you have oily skin and your makeup ain't staying. My concealer rarely stays and my face always looks crappy at the end of the day too. It's been better now that I use a powder foundation versus a liquid. Maybe try a foundation more suited for oily skin?
