Diving, swimming, gymnastics. But I'm looking most forward to diving. It's my favourite. My mom and I make a game out of making fun of the crappy non-Chinese divers who make huge splashes. AZNPRYDE YEAH.

Guo Jingjing is pretty (and a HELL of a diver), and so is her boyfriend Tian Liang. (ex? I can't remember).

I just saw this spread of Michael Phelps in People Magazine. Holy crap, is he ever ugly. And full of himself.

The Olympics start on August 8 (8th month, 8th day, 2008) and end on the 24th, since the number 8 is considered lucky.

Posted by: Joannnnnne Jul 23 2008, 11:14 AM

Posted by: superstitious Aug 6 2008, 02:32 PM

Judo. I watch as many as I can. I wish I could find a printable schedule. :(

Posted by: Gigi Aug 8 2008, 11:16 AM

Who watched the Opening Ceremony?

FCUKING AWESOME.

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 8 2008, 12:15 PM

Ugh, I had a plan to wake up at 5 in the morning to watch it live EXCEPT MY ALARM CLOCK DIDN'T WAKE ME UP!!!! So I woke up when I heard my sister asked my mom why she didn't wake us up at 7.

Dammit. I guess I'll have to wait for the rerun later today. = =''

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 8 2008, 06:35 PM

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 8 2008, 11:40 PM

Favourite part(s) of the entire ceremony?

For me, it's got to be the printing part! It was pretty flipping incredible...

Posted by: towntown2 Aug 8 2008, 11:48 PM

I'm watching it right now.
Palestinians are making their way around the track right now.

Posted by: Melie Aug 9 2008, 12:08 AM

i'll be watching the gymnastics, basketball and maybe swimming

but i'm so pissed about how the opening ceremony isn't being broadcast on youtube or on the nbc website.

Posted by: hollywoodawaits Aug 9 2008, 12:08 AM

Im excited!

I want Tom Daley to win his diving event, even though im from the US. he's pretty cute 2. lol

Posted by: Teesa Aug 9 2008, 12:28 AM

wow, great job nbc for delaying coverage and then (at least for colorado people) having major blackout problems.

anyhoo, caught almost all of it-AH-MAZING! the guys with the drums were unbelievable. some of the countries had horrible outfits (i think it was hungary who had the women in those ridiculous flowered outfits), but some looked quite classy =)

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 9 2008, 12:30 AM

HOOOOOOOOLY CRAP, the next olympics, whereever it may be.. i doubt they can ever top that.

Chicity has no chance laugh.gif

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 9 2008, 01:45 AM

^ Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC. =(

Posted by: Tungster Aug 9 2008, 01:54 AM

You know Kobe Bryant had the loudest ovation. That's amazing. He got more cheers than the Chinese President, the Russian, and George Bush. The moment was so odd that even U.S. journalists were looking at each other in puzzlement.

Oh, and I was watching the Girls Gymnastic training earlier, and the girls were hot! I have white fever. blush.gif

And oh, I'm watching badminton too since it's my favorite sport. And this Japanese chick literally broke this Iceland chick so she had to forfeit haha. Then I watched this Indonesian chick beat this German chick. It was a hella good match. Went down to the very last point.

Posted by: towntown2 Aug 9 2008, 01:56 AM

WOW!
OMG!
That was so amazing.
The torch runner? The last torch runner?

Hm, I should look for the full schedule of the events...

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 9 2008, 02:29 AM

yea agreed they look like a bunch of red cherry blossoms lol. the US' outfits were nice but too bland to stand out from the whole, i did like the barretts though.i think i like the swedish womans outfit, it was simple and modern.

Posted by: rockguy Aug 9 2008, 08:44 AM

omfg that was some nice work the chinese did..
i liked how the torch was lighten at the end with the runner...
hell i liked everything haha... never seen something like it...
&the Bird's Nest, what an amazing work of architecture
what an amazing culture :)

Posted by: doughnut Aug 9 2008, 09:17 AM

i watched swimming heats which was quite intense.

Posted by: Gigi Aug 9 2008, 10:42 AM

As a Chinese person...f**k YEAH I'M PATRIOTIC. GO CHINA!!!!!!!

ZHONG GUO JIA YOU, AO YUN JIA YOU!

You know I would type Chinese if I knew how. Sorry for the fob moment. I can't help it. The atmosphere is electric in HK! Haha people stop in the streets to watch the huge TVs in malls and cheer China on.

FIRST GOLD FOR CHINA - girl from Guangzhou. Weightlifting. Friggin awesome. You know if it was Canada up against China, that I would TOTALLY cheer for China.

Opening Ceremony: totally loved how they painted the thing RIGHT THERE. And then the athletes coloured in the bottom bit with their footprints. I thought the whole thing was really creative.

The lighting of the Olympic Flame/torch runner dude was SO AWESOME. I loved the collective gasp in the audience haha.

I liked how the American outfits were the same for the men and women (I mean, in colour scheme. Obviously the cutting would be different). Pretty much all the other countries had different colours for the two genders. OH agree with whoever said that thing about the country with like, the Hawaiian shirts. Ew. Chinese outfits were so blah for the women - that garish shade of yellow. Eurgh. Should have made them all wear red. Then it would have been a huuuuuge sea of red, and a little bit of yellow, like the flag.

Joanne - haven't you seen those outfits at the Bay for the Canadians? They looked gross on TV, but they're actually not that bad. But they got criticised for having them made in China - lol.

The Olympics are always so intense for me, and yet I'm like the least athletic person ever haha.

Guys, since a lot of you love it so much - Diving tomorrow, Women's Synchronized 3m springboard final! 2:30pm Beijing time. You do the conversion.

That was an amazingly long post. Patriotism kicks in, sorry.

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 9 2008, 11:49 AM

^ A springboard final already? Good thing it's not sometime between 1-6am here. xD

I stayed up last night so I could watch the Canadians (or, at least mainly Kyle Shewfelt) compete in mens gymnastics... but I ended up falling asleep. Damn. And the different time zones really suck! I feel like I'm missing out on so many of the events... So far I've only watched a bit of womens beach volleyball (Russia vs Australia) and a bit of mens gymnastics (America).

Posted by: Gigi Aug 9 2008, 12:15 PM

There's events in Diving for the next 4 days (Sunday to Wednesday), all finals, all at 2:30pm Beijing time. I think it goes like Women's Sync 3m Springboard, Men's Sync 10m Platform, Women's Sync 10m Platform, then Men's Sync 3m Springboard.

WATCH ON WEDNESDAY FOR ALEXANDRE DESPATIE (CND). WOOTWOOT.

Full schedule here: http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/index.shtml

Posted by: Teesa Aug 9 2008, 12:20 PM

i'm super excited for men's basketball and men's tennis to start tomorrow!!

Posted by: Gigi Aug 9 2008, 12:23 PM

^ MEN'S BASKETBALL!!!! China vs USA...Yao vs Kobe lol. It'll be intense!

Posted by: Teesa Aug 9 2008, 01:00 PM

but i feel really bad for yao because his body is so riddled with injuries and he's definitely not in top shape sad.gif but go team USA!

Posted by: Gigi Aug 9 2008, 01:13 PM

^ Yeah. sad.gif Honestly though, I expect the Americans to win.

Speaking of Yao, I love how they had a little kid walk next to him during the Opening Ceremony. The kid was actually 9, but next to Yao he looked like he was around 5 haha. If you saw him, you probably noticed a bald spot on his head - apparently he got it from an injury when he was saving someone in an accident (details fuzzy, and my Chinese translation is no good). But he's an orphan too. Poor kid.

Posted by: Hedonism Aug 9 2008, 01:15 PM

I watched Volleyball, Cycling, Rowing, and Beach Volleyball and I'm bored,

I kinda wanna see Diving, and fer SURE I gotta see Gymnastics.

Posted by: tininja Aug 9 2008, 01:19 PM

Lol, I'm watching women's volleyball with US vs. Japan. So freaking close.

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 9 2008, 01:21 PM

^ Haha, I'm kind of watching that one now too!

omg! that kid was so freaking adorable! he was a survivor from the earthquake and apparently, when he was rescued, he gave a little salute to the soldiers who found him. isn't that so cute? and i also heard the announcers say the little boy also saved a couple of his friends. amazing.
and i know, he barely went up to yao's waist!

Posted by: tininja Aug 9 2008, 01:30 PM

Aw, that kid was adorable! He did look like he was 5 compared to Yao. laugh.gif The story was touching. I think he got more attention than anyone else there. XD.gif

Posted by: Gryffindor-Girl Aug 9 2008, 01:37 PM

Swimming, gymnastics,And diving.

Posted by: xoxo_proud Aug 9 2008, 02:00 PM

Definitely watching Gymnastics, swimming and soccer. The USA volleyball game was intense and winning all 3 medals in fencing (sabre) is great!

Posted by: Gigi Aug 9 2008, 02:25 PM

Thanks for explaining in detail about the kid - what a cutie! Amazing how he saved his friends as well. A truly touching story.

I was just watching the womens soccer game, China vs Canada, and omg it was the most boring thing ever. Oh, and the equestrian events are taking place in HK, and a ton of the locals here rushed to buy tickets to watch some events, but a lot of people fell asleep XD. And then they left early. So much for Olympic spirit.

"Yeah, those Chinese girls don't look 16 at all. More like 12" (In other words)

They said it like 15 times.

EDIT// But the way the Chinese steadily increase their Gold medal and total medal count at each of the Olympic games, you know that it'll only be a matter of time before we steamroll everybody. So you hold your tongue, honey.

...I should take that back. Canada is not horrible, as they are good enough to compete at the international level, but never good enough to excel. *shakes head*

But I am going to cheer on Despatie on Wednesday, because he's actually good. :D And any other Canadians, especially if the USA are competing in that event.

Well, the officials went by the athlete's passports, which said they were all (15 going on) 16, but when the country is the one issuing the passports...

People aren't really jumping to conclusions since the youngest Chinese athletes look YOUNG, like 13-14 young. Communism doesn't have anything to do with the Olympics, BUT putting out a strong showing means everything. They want to claim their place in the modern world (to which they have every right). Sometimes it seems like they'd amount to anything to look good in the world's eyes (i.e. the lip synching child in the opening ceremonies).

We all know that China's doing almost everything possible to make sure that those who came for the Olympics get their money's worth, etc.

Knowing that, can you really put the whole gymnastics thing past them?
Sure, the girls are amazing, but a lot of them really look younger than sixteen. Some look like they're barely 13!
The suspicion is valid.
And it's not because China's a communist country or anything.

If America [or any other country for that matter] had chosen to send athletes that obviously look younger than the lowest alloted age, the same suspicions would arise.

I didn't say they cheated, but there was suspicions otherwise it wouldn't be display in worldwide. When the media publicize their suspicions, it does ruin my perspective.

With that question mark indicated in my post earlier, I didn't push the claim that it was true which means I wasn't sure if I could trust them with their winnings with their young competitors that looks like their body are still developing.

When the media are putting China down WHILE china put so much money into the Olympic, it confuses me. China was able to make such a great worthy event which pleases people.

At the same time, the media is putting them down. If the government didnt have anything with the competitors, why are they letting it slide by not defending them or do something (not that i heard of)? That's makes me so confused.

Why would such a economical country spend so much money into one thing and then they got a bad reputations for their competitors.

Maybe a communist country may possibly have anything to do with the Olympic? They were the ONE who host it since communism can pretty do anything they want OVER the people's will. As you know, I'm not very bold on this part.

I dont know if you're talking to me, but i'll reply.

I think you may also be right about Asian girls do look younger than their age in general. The western media may not be familiar with a 16 years old looking girls. I mean, how much young Asians do you see on tv? Not much, but they are breaking into it the media, but there's no young Asian girls in it. I think it's also the factor that leads to accusation because the population of u.s isn’t mainly Asians. Of course, it's easy to make assumption to someone's age when you never seen them, see any familiar faces, or connect with them.

Agreed. From my own personal observation, I know of some girls that look that young, even in my own school. There are constantly 10th graders that look that young, and they're all Asian. I mean, look at Cheng Fei (the oldest girl on the Chinese Team). She's 20, but she could definitely pass as 16. On the other hand, a lot of the white girls look like they're 20! Holy crap. And also agreed with them being skinny - a lot of girls that are skinny even from a young age don't develop as quickly as other, more meaty girls.

The suspicion is valid though. And although only the passports count as proof of their age - I'm sure that if there was enough suspicion, more investigation would have been done. Also, I highly doubt that China would do something as shameful as that, because we all know how important it is for them to not lose face, especially on the international stage.

The Chinese want the Olympics to be PERFECT, and this would be a terrible dirty mark on their otherwise good record. As much criticism as China (constantly) gets for their government policies, environment, toxic crap in random toys (lol), I have to say that the Olympics have been a great success so far.

She didn't fall, it was the other Chinese girl (Jiang Yuyuan). The girl who won Bronze was Yang Yilin. They weren't even wearing the same outfit...or the same color eyeshadow. LOL.

Totally thought Shawn Johnson was gonna take the gold! She's so feisty.

Posted by: salcha4u Aug 15 2008, 03:07 AM

I thought Johnson was gonna take gold too...I kinda think the scoring is rigged though. CHINA IS NOT THAT GOOD. I would have thought Russia or Romania would have gotten a higher score.

Both my parents and I laughed when she fell on the vault. Then my dad laughed some more at their ridiculous eyeshadow.

Also...what would the US do without Phelps?

The Russians and Romanians, while technically alright, f**ked up some bits and really didn't have much of the elegance and lightweight feeling that the medalists had. And the Chinese girl WASN'T that good - that's why she got Bronze.

^what do you mean by that?

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 15 2008, 11:55 AM

I get annoyed with people just bring up China being a communist country for no reason.

And the girl is reportedly 14, not 9-11. If the FIG or IOC aren't going to do anything about it, I don't see what the big problem is. They could easily strip her of her medal like they did to the North Korean shooter. If the officials believed that these claims of fake ages are true, they would further investigate the situation.

Sure, someone argued earlier that the passports are accepted proof of the gymnasts' eligibility and that China could have easily changed their ages because the passports were made in China. But then it's also very easy for OTHER countries to change their athletes' ages too. I honestly think people are only targeting China because it's CHINA.

Posted by: Gigi Aug 15 2008, 11:58 AM

^ Yeah, and then their reason is that they're Communist.

And I'll say it again, I don't hate y'all because George Bush is a dumbass.

^^ Totally.
Long and skinny.

What are the chances of Nastia and Shawn returning for London?

Posted by: Gigi Aug 15 2008, 12:30 PM

^ I can't say for sure since I don't know much about them, but from what I do know, they've had some prior experience. And with artistic gymnastics, the younger you are as a female, the more of an advantage there is for you (hence the whole Chinese age controversy). So I would say that they're probably going for London, but they might not do terribly well, and defo not 2016.

Posted by: Gigi Aug 15 2008, 12:35 PM

Her long legs make her look really, really awkward on the beam though. Actually, in all the events. Shawn Johnson looked a lot more...gymnastic-y? Haha. But it didn't prevent Nastia from pwning.

The HK commentators here are retarded. They're like...OMG wow Western people are so open, they openly kiss their coaches. And I'm like...dude. That's her dad.

Posted by: Gigi Aug 15 2008, 12:50 PM

^ Yeah I have a problem with the American gymnasts landings. It's not that they're not clean landings or something, but when the raise their arms and move from one side to the other, they do it so fast, like they're twitching, or it feels really "cheerleader". I prefer one or two less frantic ones.

Hong Kong is a part of China, but a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. Hong Kong operates, in some areas, completely separately from China. So it's like one country with two different systems.

I suppose they could be part of the same team as China, but they are different regions, so...*shrug* And besides, no one from Hong Kong is good enough to compete on the Chinese team anyway.

The honey is actually used like Stick-um; to provide a better grip on certain elements in "hanging" events. We always see gymnasts chalk up both their apparatus (to make it easier to swing on) and hands (to prevent cracks in the skin). By placing a little honey on either their fingertips or palms (or both) gymnasts can get an even better grip on the rings or bars while swinging.

I didn't watch it live, just the condensed version, so I don't really get how they chose between He and Liukin. So they had the exact same score, then what? Someone care to elaborate?

From what I understand (and my Cantonese is not excellent), they chose based on what category they lost marks on - apparently Liukin lost more points in a more important category? But I have no idea on the details.

So you know how they automatically throw out each competitor's highest and lowest judge's score right? In the event of a tie breaker, they take away the next highest score. So even though it was a tie, with the tie breaker, it left He with 9.1, 9.1, 9.0 and Liukin with 9.1, 9.0, 9.0.

Well, the judges didn't calculate the tiebreaker, the computer did (I forgot to mention that). It does it automatically.

But the major problem with the judging is, according to the sports commentators last night, that -- in order to remove bias -- none of the countries with athletes competing have judges. So that means no judges from the USA, China, Russia, Romania, etc. Therefore the judging is left in the hands of countries like Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, etc, countries that have never produced an award winning gymnast. They don't know what to look for, ergo, they're too inexperienced to judge the Olympics.

I'm sure it's a FIG thing. Since, you know, the voting scandal last Olympics with one of the Hamm twins.

Posted by: Gigi Aug 19 2008, 12:27 PM

Carrie, I think it's going a little too far to say that they're totally inexperienced, although I realize you're just quoting this from the commentators. Just because a country hasn't put out an award-winning gymnast, doesn't mean that they're not experienced enough to judge. (Don't quote me on this because I'm not sure): The judges should be following a standardized system of giving points, and they should have gone over that extensively before the Olympics even began. From what I imagine, I don't think the judges just meet up on the day and start judging. There's definitely some qualifications that need to be fulfilled in order to be a judge. The IOC would not allow anything otherwise, and neither would the FIG. They should be world-class judges.

I do agree that they would not be as experienced as judges from the gymnasts' countries though.

However, I have a bone to pick with the commentators. The competitors were judged by the same people, who, as I mentioned before, should have judged them fairly, objectively, and by the same standards. For arguement's sake, let's just assume that the judges were inexperienced. The Chinese team faced the same inexperienced judges as the American team. What the commentators are making it sound like is that the inexperienced judges only benefited the Chinese team, and f**ked over the American team. If anything, the judges would make the same errors in judgment for both teams, and therefore their inexperience in judging would be a moot point. But for the commentators to imply that it was the judges that gave the wrong points to America is to imply that there was outright cheating going on, cheating that only benefited the Chinese.

Isn't it a little funny that this comes up only after the tiebreaker controversy? How about all the times that the Chinese (or any other country, for that matter), came in to a close second or third to the Americans? There's no conceivable doubt that the American gymnast was more deserving. However, if this inexperience truly applies to all the gymnasts, then wouldn't all the times that Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin won their gold medals be in question? The point I'm trying to make is that all the gymnasts have both benefited and judged wrongly by these so-called inexperienced judges, and therefore it's an even playing field for everybody. The hope is that the net result of the judging should reveal the true winner. In He's case (and Johnson, and Liukin, and every other medal-winner in the gymnastics so far), I think that has been the case.

Sorry for the outrageously long post. Also, no one should take offense in what I say - it just seems like the American commentators are being nitpicky at something that's not really significant.

-----------------------------------

Anyone read about the American silver medalist for Women's pole vault, Jenn Stuczynski?

She's the one that made the "I hope Americans would kick some Russian Butt" comment. Yelena Isinbaeva, the Russian gold medalist, replied with: "She must respect me and ... know her position ... Now she knows it."

Stuczynski's reply: "I think Yelena talks a lot ... I think she's told what to say so I don't really read anything that she says, that she might come out with." Stuczynski said her goal "isn't really to catch her."

What's your opinion? Honestly I think Stuczynski's being a sore loser, and Isinbaeva really f**king KICKED ASS that day.

Yeah, I think the commentators, although I agree with them in that Liukin should have won last night (I like her style better), are putting too much emphasis on judging mistakes. There's a reason why they're commenting and not judging the competition themselves.

LOL @ the exchange between Stuczynski and Isinbaeva. That's almost as good as that French dude and that Serbian dude hatin' on Michael Phelps.

I have a feeling that Stuczynski's coach has something to do with her comments.
I don't know why, but it's mostly from the way he acted when she went over to him before Yelena broke the record.

Good for Yelena to win.
She did really good.

^ i know! her coach was maaaaaaaaaaaaaad, haha.

and gigi, i didn't know she hid under her blanket-how cute! yes, she definitely kicked major butt.

lol carrie, i've never been there, but i (like the rest of america) have michael fever. wub.gif

yeah, i agree gigi-i've always been wary about the judging in sports that seem to be more subjectively judged (i.e. skating, gymnastics, etc.) i don't know. i don't have that much faith in the system, but hey, i don't have that much knowledge on the subject either!

I think Nastia should be recognized for the grace she displayed while handling the situation.
She looked disappointed, but she remained a good sport about it.
She's gaining like a bajillion sympathy points now.

She had such a good attitude about it...and the fact that she didn't even care about He's age.

I'm sure she does.
She can't really say anything about it publicly, but I'll bet she and her teammates dish about it behind closed doors.

Trufax, man.

Is anyone else looking forward to the gymnastics Champion's Gala tonight? It's my favorite part of the Olympics.

Although I've heard a shitload of controversy surrounding gymnastics, at the end of the day, I feel like Liukin and her teammates are great sports about it - none of this Stuczynski bullcrap. That's not to say it doesn't happen in the locker room XD.

The Chinese women's gymnastics team was weak this year - they only won the team gold because others choked. Liukin and Johnson are way better competitors - if you could make a team with just those two, they would win for sure. But all the Chinese girls f**ked up along the way in the individual events. So while they're (allegedly) using their young age as an advantage, their inexperience also bites them in the butt a bit.

Chinese men's gymnastics KICKED ASS though. I'm definitely curious to see what London 2012 will bring us.

Speaking of London - HOLY CRAP what an ugly logo.

It's ugly fosho. But I'm wondering if the numbers are supposed to look like something...like a dude holding a torch maybe? Confused.

^ Hey... it's a "2012" all funkified! I like it happy.gif

Posted by: Joannnnnne Aug 20 2008, 06:14 PM

^x2 WTF at the logo. I think it looks so ugly... maybe they were trying to make it look like Greek lettering? LOL

btw, YAY FOR CANADA! 13 medals wooooot! =D
