Forums _ Debate _ Stereotyping Music!

Posted by: CO0KiE May 29 2009, 12:22 AM

If you listen to rock music, but don't look like it (black clothing, chains, pale face, dark make up, etc) people are surprised.
Where did this really come from? Where did it start?

Why do people stereotype someone by their race & the music they listen to?

People automatically drop their jaws when they look at me and see that I like to listen to Alesana, Cradle of Filth, etc.

instinct.

All the popular genres that people listen to today were all started by black people, so this doesn't concern me. cool.gif

Well it really boils down to the question of why people stereotype, period.

And there are really like 30 existing topics on that, and I'm tired, so I'll just leave it at that.

OK, well, you know why now. Anything else to complain about? People will not stop stereotyping, no matter how much you bore them with your silly threads about it.

This is something that happens in High School. Once you get out of High School no-one gives a shit about the music you listen to. I wore cut up jeans, wore tight band t-shirts, and had blue hair with spikes in high school. I listened to Punk and Rock n' Roll. Now I don't give a f*ck. These days it's about what you do with your life, not how you dress or what music you're listening too. Do you have potential? If not, I couldn't give a rats ass about you.

People sterotype everything. We know this.

I dunno... I've never actually taken the time to look at how someone dresses to assume what music they listen to. I mean lets be honest, some people simply shine and can easily be labeled, "a goth". I myself listen to all types of music and I don't think someone could easily tell what it is I listen to. Funny enough, I prefer to wear black majority of the time than any other color and I'm definitely not Goth or emo for that matter. And in my car I listen to anything from Country, to hip hop, to rock, etc...

ohmy.gif really? And how far back does the Rock you studied go? 1910s 20s 30s etc. You do realize that Rock music originated from Rhythm and Blues, and that the term Rock and Roll originated in blues also?

Posted by: Buttsex May 30 2009, 01:35 PM

Rock came from Blues, not R&B.

And Blues came from Cajun music.

Posted by: hypnotique May 30 2009, 01:49 PM

My bio teacher said that was a darwinian evolution mechanisim hardwired into our brains.

I mostly wear t-shirts and black jeans.

I toatally understand. In MY situation, I live in Mississippi.. I wear the whole jeans, tshirt and boots thing. Thats just how im most comfortable, yet I would rather listen to alternative/rock music. But BECAUSE I wear that attire, everyone always assumes that I'm a redneck and that the only music that I should be listening to is country..

What part of Mississippi do you live in?

Posted by: Meimiko Jul 25 2009, 01:49 AM

Probably because we don't have signs hanging around our necks telling people what we listen to. It's lame but at the same time I like it. It just adds to the interesting parts of life.

Posted by: AutumnSunsets Jul 25 2009, 03:49 PM

think it has something with the way you talk, act, behave, if you act all gay and shit, your gonna be a country cow

and people do dress a certain way if they're really into that music, goths listen to bloody rock/metal, and they dress like it, country sons have their sunrise fun, and us city folk, well, we judge you JUST BECAUSE! so get over it punk.

Because people are creatures of habit.

because we are prejudice, end of story.
