Forums _ School _ AP or no AP?

Posted by: loveOURworld Sep 11 2010, 09:23 PM

So I am a junior this year in high school and I am currently taking 4 AP classes: AP Biology, AP Language & Composition, AP Psychology, and APUSH. I am okay with all my AP classes except my AP Lang class. I have it as my last period and because I am in a sport, this means I will be going to miss a majority of that class during the season which doesn't end until late October. I thought about switching periods, but that would affect my schedule entirely, and it wouldn't work out. I was debating whether or not I should drop out not only because of the sport but because I'm not sure if I can successfully handle all 4 of my AP classes. My teacher said we'll be doing lots of writing and such in that class and if we were to miss it, we would have to make it up somehow and being in extracurricular activities is no excuse. Should I just drop out and switch to honors just to be safe? I know junior year is important and I want to do well. Please give me your opinions.

really there isn't much reason behind taking AP classes. if you're an underachiever switch to basic, otherwise honors is good.

if you think you're not going to keep up with your english AP classes then switch to honors if you can. i think the only harm being done to your schedule is just having your AP classes in different periods than normal.

if you keep your AP classes, make sure to keep your agenda updated with your assignments and find ways to spend time wisely.

Well, I'm not really into writing too much but I know this class will benefit me. It's just this year is the teacher's first year of teaching AP Lang and I don't know what kind of teacher she is. Also, I don't want this decision to affect my chances of not being able to get into a certain college.

go for it then. if you hypothesize the teacher isn't doing their job so well, then it's your responsibility to get everything you need to prepare for. maybe you could switch out for another AP English teacher?

Yeah but I really don't like writing and I know we will be doing alot writing in that class. So I feel if I do stay, I'm not going to be happy and I'm going to be dreading it every day. And there is no other AP Lang teacher so that is not an option.

Switching teachers is a bitch at my school. It's almost impossible. I don't know about yours though.

Honestly 4 APs is way too much. You look like you're trying too hard. You're lucky CB is no longer penalizing if you get a question wrong on an AP test. Is there absolutely no other period of AP Lang?

EDIT//

If you don't like writing, why the hell are you in an AP English class?

Well, my school is so competitive and I want to graduate in the top 10% of my class. There are other periods but it doesn't work with my schedule, I've tried.

I don't enjoy writing but I know I'm going to take English courses that are at a college level anyways, so I thought why not just start now and see how I do? Like, I don't want to take it but I know it will help me with my writing skills. I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up dropping out of that class though because I want to focus on the three other AP classes I'm already taking.

Those AP classes are not the same as college even though they say so.

I think three AP's are good enough for me this year. I hope I will be able to switch out tomorrow before it's too late. Thanks for all your help everyone!
