Forums _ Technology _ CreateBlog IRC chat

Posted by: mipadi Mar 7 2009, 01:09 AM

Hey everyone Technology forum aficionados and other interested parties,

I got an IRC chatroom set up for createblog on my server. We used to have one back in the day and it was kind of fun, so I thought I'd try to get it going again. So grab an IRC client and get chattin'! Here's the info:

Server: irc.foonetic.net
Channel: #createblog

If you need directions for connecting, read the thread or just ask. Or read http://www.createblog.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=219488&view=findpost&p=3243961.

Also, NickServ is running on the server, so feel free to register your nick.

OMG Thanks, I knew that something was missing here.

The AIM live chat is...idk..
I dont use AIM

Posted by: jcp Mar 7 2009, 01:41 AM

I actually have no clue what that is?

Posted by: 9001 Mar 7 2009, 11:55 AM

Damn. I suggested this in some topic once. It got shot down immediately.

But we needed this. I'm joining now.

Edit:

I'm getting the same thing.

Posted by: brooklyneast05 Mar 7 2009, 11:57 AM

i don't get it. what's the difference between this group chat and what we already have?

Posted by: Deospeon Mar 7 2009, 11:58 AM

Its best if we change the server to Dejatoons or LucidChat.
Because seriously, I'm having problems in connecting to your server.

Not everyone uses AIM.
So IRC is best for Chats.

Posted by: brooklyneast05 Mar 7 2009, 12:01 PM

but if you have to download a client isn't it the same thing almost _unsure.gif

Well.. AIM is something that slows down my computer (idk why)
I use Neebly as my IRC Client (bye bye mIRC).
Neebly is free

Posted by: 9001 Mar 7 2009, 12:02 PM

You don't have to download a client. There are tons of Java based online IRC clients, but they're usually pretty laggy.

Posted by: iDecay Mar 7 2009, 12:03 PM

It's really just going to split up into two chats. shrug.gif Most AIM cbcers probably won't even touch that.

Exactly. Just download aim instead.

You have to download an AIM client, too.

Anyway, this isn't a replacement for CBC -- this is just something for CB's nerds to do in their free time. The IRC channel was fun, back when we had it. Plus IRC is way older than AIM, so it has a legacy on the Internet that nerds enjoy.

Ooh, see what I did there?

But seriously, the reason I put this in Technology was to alert the techno-nerds, not the whole of CB, since it's just an unofficial IRC channel for CB, like the old one.

Posted by: Deospeon Mar 7 2009, 12:05 PM

I'll download AIM right now.
But I'm still looking forward to this IRC

Are you contacting it on the right port (6669)?
Do you have SSL enabled?

Posted by: jcp Mar 8 2009, 10:29 AM

You have to specify the port number. Try /server ppartment.homeip.net 6669.

Posted by: jcp Mar 8 2009, 11:01 AM

I tried that already. No luck. Its probably cause I looked in all the settings but couldnt find anything about ssl.

Posted by: Deospeon Mar 8 2009, 11:28 AM

try this now

/server irc.dejatoons.net
enter
/join #CreateBlog

or simply just go on

What client are you using?

Posted by: mipadi Mar 8 2009, 12:05 PM

Okay, I opened up a port for non-SSL traffic. Here's the info:

Server: ppartment.homeip.net, port 6667 (standard port, so you shouldn't need to specify it)
Channel: #createblog

Posted by: jcp Mar 8 2009, 12:25 PM

Woohoo! It works!
Edit:Someone get on!

Posted by: jcp Mar 8 2009, 01:30 PM

Step by step instructions on how to get into the IRC chat:

1. Download a IRC client. This is kinda like a IM Program. I installed http://www.neebly.com/.

2. Once you install a client you open it up and in the line where you type, enter
/server ppartment.homeip.net and hit enter.
Once you have connected enter, /join #createblog and hit enter again.

You should be in!

I'll stick with Meebo so I won't have to download Aim.
What's the difference between IRC and AIM?

IRC is internet relay chat. It's a much older system, and has very few bugs. There are no friends lists, you can change your name whenever you want, and it's a billion times better.

No registration, lighter client, better chat.

And you can't use IRC on meebo.

Posted by: superstitious Mar 8 2009, 02:21 PM

Just tried it. I like IRC wayyyy better than AIM.

This is nifty, Michael. Thanks for setting it up. I miss old IRC chating in general.

Posted by: Deospeon Mar 8 2009, 10:32 PM

Ok, You guys should be able to enter our channel with no hassle.

Those who dont want to risk the thing with downloading IRC Clients, can just
go to http://fantasycore.heliohost.org
You can enter ppartment.homeip.net from there.

k i has IRC now

Posted by: jcp Apr 5 2009, 04:40 PM

Its not connecting?

Posted by: mipadi Sep 3 2009, 10:05 PM

Okay, I want to get this IRC thing going again.

I'm pretty bored at work and sometimes in the evening, so I'm starting up the CB IRC channel again. Unfortunately, my former roommate doesn't have IRC up and running, so I found a new server to host. The server is:

irc.foonetic.net (on all the usual ports)

Server info is available at http://foonetic.net/. The channel is

#createblog (duh)

foonetic runs all the usual services (NickServ, ChanServ, etc.). More info is available http://foonetic.net/ and http://wiki.foonetic.net/wiki/Main_Page. If you get on and know at least a bit about IRC, I'll give you op status.

Questions? Just ask in this thread, someone'll help you out.

EDIT - well I gotta go, so I just signed out. ;P

Posted by: jcp Sep 8 2009, 12:43 PM

I just use chatzilla btw. It is a firefox add on which I like a lot!

Posted by: superstitious Sep 8 2009, 02:55 PM

I keep forgetting about this. I'll log on when I get home (maybe) since I still haven't re-installed aim.

Posted by: superstitious Sep 9 2009, 07:17 AM

I had a hell of a time logging in last night for some reason. Then I realized that the first post might be dated. :x

Fun fact, IRC came out way before AIM. Can't we just use the IRC clients that have been on our systems since 1989 instead of using a long lengthy procedure?
