Ok I have a serious dilemma, I can either:

  • Change myself so that more guys respect me
  • or stay the same so i still have my friends (majority are girls) and my girlfriend
Reason for 1: High school gym class is brutal for me, due to the fact that I'm small and scrawny and can't lift much over 120. Some of the jock guys have suggested i take weight training as a class (i luckily just got in), but now its even more awkward. I'm trying to be tougher, show less pain and emotion, and just be stronger and more of a guy.

Reason for 2: I've been dating my girlfriend for almost 6 months now. She completely despises the fact that I'm trying to 'man up' (her words, not mine). She likes the old (weak) person I was and despises the new person I'm becoming (in her words: a douchebag).

What am I supposed to do?

damn what is wrong with your friends. your friends are going to leave you if you get in better shape? if you wanna weight lift then why not, it's good for you. i've never heard of a girlfriend who didn't like a guy in good shape and would rather him be weak and scrawny. she should get over it. just because you want to gain confidence physically, be able to relate more to other guys, etc doesn't mean you're a douchebag.

i don't really understand the other part about how you're trying to show no pain or emotion. what do you mean? do you just cry a lot and get hurt a lot now or something?

if lifting weights to "man up" is going to make you feel better about yourself then you should do it.

I'm usually just a empathetic person (among guys: HUGE disadvantage, but girls love it), but I'm tired of just getting all this shit from other guys in gym. I'm always called a f****t and cocksucker and shit like that. I just want to prove them that I can be a guy (and less of a weakling). The general hypermasculine stoic stereotype in our high school reigns supreme. The only sport that I'm good at (surfing) , I can't play where I live. And according to the male student body (Jock = Good, Girls love you, etc.) (Not in a sport= stupid, pathetic, ugly, gay, retarded, etc.) also (any emotion besides anger= extreme weakness, [no balls, ect.]) (anger= powerful, commands respect)

My girlfriend said to try out for the football team next year (sure... great idea 5' 11', 188 pound guy would be perfect for football). whistling.gif

Also, people at my school hate the fact that i hate wrestling, MMA; the only sports team i've ever respected is the Yankees. I don't watch sports, i don't play sports.

f*ck you f****t. MMA ftw

Work out if you want to. It doesn't have to be a social event. Ignore the other guys and just listen to some music or some shit. I know plenty of guys that, while they don't care if someone will works out with them, they would rather keep the socializing down to a minimum until there just cooling down. Tell the others to suck your dick because your trying to work out.

If you are dating a girl who would break up with you for working out then that's your issue.

this,

plus i don't get how your schedule or anything you've said so far makes you a "f****t." maybe you care too much about what other people think.

You're not gay but you're a f****t for being insecure and a pussy for not doing anything about it. So you're a f****t pussy. They were right, somewhat.

Yeah..

This is so strange, that people would care so much about what YOU do. If you want to work out, you should do it because you want to, not because your friends want you to. And if working out/getting tougher or whatever ends up being something that makes you happy and your girlfriend doesn't like it, then she's being incredibly selfish.

six months is not that long, you shouldn't let your girlfriend tell you what to do or what not to do. there are plenty of fish in the sea and if she don't like what you're becoming today well tough. you should do what makes you happy.

Im also a skinny guy, sports not my thing... u mustn't take what ppl say so seriously. Just push it aside and be who you want to be. It works for me, my friends respect me for it because it shows who i am and who i dont wanna be. And its high school? who remembers high school after 10 years? and with the subjects u studying I bet you gonna be some body awesome while those other guys are just gonna be the same dumb jocks that wont knw more than 2+2 = 4 at the end of the day. But then again american's culture is very different to ours (no offence)
