That was fast! It has been just over 24 hours since Apple iPad has been available and it has already been jailbroken.
MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team has just announced that he has managed to port the “Spirit” jailbreak to the iPad.
MuscleNerd announced the breaking news with the following tweet:

He also posted a photo of his achievement:

MuscleNerd has also posted a video, which shows him logging into the iPad remotely:
You might remember that comex had also demonstrated an untethered jailbroken iPod Touch 3rd gen few days back. comex has clarified that the "Spirit" jailbreak is not the same as the userland jailbreak used for the untethered jailbreak, which could be done using Mobile Safari.
But this means that the iPhone Dev team could release the software tools to jailbreak iPad sometime in the future. MuscleNerd points out that there is still work to be done to get to that stage:

installing custom firmware, use it to get free apps, change your theme, etc.

The iPhone Dev team is working on the jailbreak for the iPad at the moment because the iPad is running on iPhone OS 3.2
i'll update this topic when there is news about further jailbreaking news on the iPad

But in a way, I kind of expected them to jailbreak it soon.
