Sweet, I am looking forward to it, though I am worried slightly, I cannot see the night-time skin anymore _unsure.gif

Posted by: Gigi Nov 12 2008, 05:03 AM

He said he's re-enabling them when he's done.

Posted by: rjohnson1991 Nov 12 2008, 05:33 AM

I love the changes!

Posted by: Anarchy Nov 12 2008, 06:12 AM

Posted by: Gippersnap Nov 12 2008, 07:05 AM

Yeah, I actually like it

Posted by: Blaqheartedstar Nov 12 2008, 07:12 AM

wow this will take a while to get use too. would it be possible to get the boxed navigation on the top? without looks soo plain.
its really wiiiide.
look forward to having the skins back. Latte would be coming back right?

edit: aww man no affiliates link at the bottom?

also its great you didn't change the 100x100 icon for the 1.0 layouts. when i saw the new icon for the 2.0 i was dreading if it was the same for the 1.0

yeah for real i don't get why it needs to be so wide. it just feels like it's all out of balance to me with the tiny navigate and huge screen shots for the layouts, ect. it's so plain white and boring now on the front page mellow.gif

suppose i'll get used to it. i dont look at the homepage much anyway. at least some of the bugs are fixed.

you should keep Wp layouts, I tried submitting couple times but they never made it to the que :[ and Im sure there have been people who submitted, but after I upload the .zip file, a blank screen comes out, unlike when I submit myspace layouts, it says either I made a mistake during submission, or it will take a week to process the que 0_o
but I like the new CSS edit :]

Posted by: dreamgurl36 Nov 12 2008, 10:43 AM

At first glance, it's really... white and plain. The increased width is good, because I have widescreen. I agree with Blaqheartedstar too. The top navigation should have some colored bg, maybe?

Nice and big screenshots, though. XD

Posted by: schizo Nov 12 2008, 11:09 AM

Woah, this is going to take a lot of getting used to.

I like it, but all the screenshots for the resources are super pixelated. That's the only thing that's bugging me.

Posted by: moorepocket Nov 12 2008, 11:31 AM

nice to have you back.

Posted by: only-tuesdays Nov 12 2008, 11:34 AM

I agree on keeping the WP layouts too. I've been working on a few for submission. tongue.gif

Posted by: arcanum Nov 12 2008, 12:43 PM

Oh man, its so wide. hahaha. I like it though, I love the simplicity of the links up top, though they will take a bit of getting used to.
Yay Jusun! thumbsup.gif

looks VERY cluttered with the banner ad right underneath of the dropdown menu.

Dido.

I like everything but the new favicon and the nav!

It sorta messed up the profiles. The width will take some getting used to.

Cause i liked the thin minimalistic look.

But im glad your not done. haha

agreed. i guess that will change to a cb banner soon, which will be a little better. but still, it feels cluttered to me in general.

Posted by: paperplane Nov 12 2008, 01:44 PM

Really, I think it's excessively wide.

Posted by: kryogenix Nov 12 2008, 01:54 PM

I think it's a bit wide, as well, but I guess now people can't get so pissy over thumbed images.

Posted by: Tung Nov 12 2008, 01:57 PM

I think it was poorly done, and rushed imo. It is too cluttered, and you said you wanted it to look more professional. But I think it makes it look more distasteful though.

Yea. I like the old layout better. And yea, Gabi's right, I hate how the some of the screenshots are pixelated. And a lot seems cluttered. sad.gif

Posted by: mackenziee Nov 12 2008, 02:49 PM

I kinda like the old layout better.
I hate that ad under the menus.

Posted by: paperplane Nov 12 2008, 02:53 PM

I hardly ever have my windows maximized, so having to scroll a shit ton to read things is a pain in the ass. I can't even see the whole fast reply box at once, and this window is more than half the width of my screen. I'd rather have to thumb people's pictures, thanks.

Posted by: allvanishing Nov 12 2008, 04:18 PM

CB looks too wide now, but I'll get used to it. I see someone edited my layout for this update for Profile 2.0. Nice.

Posted by: Tung Nov 12 2008, 04:18 PM

This is like how Facebook got all wide and shit.

Posted by: heartquasm Nov 12 2008, 04:26 PM

Yeah, my main complaint is the width. I always have my windows resized as for easy clicking everywhere and anywhere... the horizontal scroll is just annoying.

Posted by: Tomates Nov 12 2008, 04:28 PM

i like the old way better ;A; no offence

Posted by: misoshiru Nov 12 2008, 04:44 PM

I agree. _smile.gif

Posted by: Gigi Nov 12 2008, 05:20 PM

I don't find the wideness that much of a problem. It could be because my windows are ALWAYS maximized.

Posted by: paperplane Nov 12 2008, 05:27 PM

It's just not very practical for those of us who can't not multitask

Posted by: ArjunaCapulong Nov 12 2008, 05:58 PM

I like that it's wider (for pix), but perhaps it's a tad too wide. Before though, it seemed like there was wasted space on the sides.

the affiliates are now at top. wanted to give it more exposure as an incentive for people to join.

what 100x100 icons? most of the thumbnails have been resized (html) but hasnt yet been properly resized (image) so they all look pixilated. ill make a script tonight to automagically resize and fix this.

QUOTE(mipadi @ Nov 12 2008, 07:54 AM) *
Yeah -- looks good, but now I have to scroll horizontally!

you need to use 1024 x 768 resolution or more. if its windowed, youll have to resize the browser accordingly.

the reason why i removed wp (even if the submitter wasnt working properly) is because they have their own internal http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ which means its very very unlikely someone whos trying to set up wordpress will look for themes outside of wordpress.org. mt just isnt popular anymore, since they still use perl, when php has taken over the hosting industry 5 years ago.

QUOTE(kreios @ Nov 12 2008, 10:45 AM) *
You should have gotten rid of the Hi5 layouts, and kept the WP & MT, those are starting to get more popular.

One thing I noticed (don't know how easy it is to fix):

i replied to the same question above.

if you have your browser windowed, why not make the window larger? im assuming youre in front of a large monitor, in which case, you can enlarge the windows without much effect on other things you want to see. cb has "stetched" ~200px.

It's sort of unfair to assume that other people browse and manage their windows the same way as you do.

I always have my browser window width taking up only about half of my widescreen so I can work on papers, notes, etc at the same time as I'm on cB. The horizontal scrollbar would still be there, but I wouldn't have to actually use it to click on the "fast reply" button.

I don't really know many people who browse with their windows maximized.

That's just my two cents.

Oh, also, I think the "Submit!" link looked better to right of the search.

oh i apologize. the thing is, with the larger thumbnails, its not possible simply to change the col width using css. plus were adding to new sections to cb soon, which wouldnt fit 770px as well using the old navbar.

Posted by: heartquasm Nov 12 2008, 07:26 PM

Hm... Is it possible to just change the width of the forum then?

Posted by: paperplane Nov 12 2008, 07:26 PM

I have to stretch the window to 80% the width of the screen not have to scroll, at which point I cannot do anything practically with the room that's left. But yes, the issue as Melissa mentioned is that I have to scroll now just to use fast reply. Other windows, like when I'm watching movies, will not let me resize the window small enough that it fits with the new cB width without it being dreadfully annoying.

I only use the forums; the size of the thumbnails are of no matter to me at all.

Posted by: karmakiller Nov 12 2008, 07:38 PM

I agree with everyone else about the width of the forums. I don't have to scroll horizontally, but they look too wide. It was easier to read people's replies when the boards weren't so wide. It feels like when you go to website to read something and all that's there is text, so you need to resize the screen.

The navigation does seem a little cluttered with the ad right underneath. But as long the latte/mocha skins are coming back... haha.

Posted by: Aberisk Nov 12 2008, 07:45 PM

I know this is irrelevant but why does the favicon look like a l or d? Just curious :]

Posted by: Da1nonlyjon Nov 12 2008, 08:45 PM

i kinda got surprised because i thought that i got signed out, but then i read the WELCOME BACK message, and noticed that its bigger!
i hate how you have to click on the layout or script inorder to see the Screenshot better, so its kinda bothering me...plus the Skin on here now is hurting my eyes.. cool.gif

Posted by: brooklyneast05 Nov 12 2008, 08:50 PM

what's the point of having it wider in the first place? i don't see why it needed to be wider really. especially since just about every complaint has been over the width.

it fits on my screen and i'm one of the select few who browse with my windows maximized and it still think it's too wide. if i was one of the people who has a horizontal scroll bar now i'd be pretty annoyed.

Posted by: ArjunaCapulong Nov 12 2008, 09:33 PM

On the other hand, it makes the essays I write from time to time look less intimidating.

Anyway I think it's a little too wide as well. And this is what cB used to look like, and we dealt with it before, so I really don't think it's a nuisance.

Btw, am I just stupid or is there no longer an Advanced Search button?

no the image in the layouts. The one thats used as a default image filler for the myspace layouts. Thats what i meant. Sorry to confuse you on that. And i totally didn't notice the added section the top nav. Great that its up there now. I have to say i really go agree that its a little too wide. maybe from 770px to 870? I think that 770px to 960px is far too much.

and the box nav was pretty awesome in fact it was the best feature of the last CB. it was also easier to spot. now we can accidentally end up clicking the add instead.
The search bar being under the account nav, same with the submit button, just looks weird being soo close to the rest of the links.

I like the wider screenshots, hopefully that can be fixed to look more clear.

The layout/graphic info was ok the way it was, under the ad, instead of on top.

would it be possible to box in some of the layers? like add a background color like before. Instead of all that white. I think thats whats putting people off.

Posted by: allvanishing Nov 12 2008, 11:03 PM

It could of been a bit wider from the old one, but not this wide. It looks like im reading a report. Maybe because there is no Latte.

Posted by: Markster Nov 13 2008, 12:18 AM

Does the ad banner haaave to go at the top? And right below the nav? :[ I think it would look sick if, instead of it being the advertisement, it was a super-pro graphic design. It would be immensely cooler if there were multiple designs that showed at random.

Posted by: fameONE Nov 13 2008, 12:58 AM

Once the kinks get worked out, I think it will look pretty good.

Would it be appropriate to change the font for the entire site, just to bring something else fresh to the table?

Posted by: micron Nov 13 2008, 01:18 AM

ok, a lot of you aren't digging the new width and wondering why its like that. the primary reason why its wider now is to make room for the larger screenshots. cb4.5 is optimized for 1024x768 resolution or higher, since people no longer use 800x600 (which was what cb4 was optimized for). granted, i didnt realize when i was designing cb 4.5 that many of you have cb windowed, which is why we have this problem now.

so, heres the deal. im running a script thats automagically updating the layout thumbnails as i type. check out the layout section and see if you still dont like it. ill port the nighttime and mocha and latte in the next few days. after you try that and you still really really dont like the fatter cb and would much rather prefer that we go back, what ill do then is make a "thin" version, where ill just have to reshrink the thumbnails (outside cb) via css at the expense of making it look choppy (since the image is larger than what its made to fit into). that way everyone's happy.

QUOTE(Aberisk @ Nov 12 2008, 07:45 PM) *

oh, its supposed to be "cb" italicized, but i can see why someone can be confused. when i finish everything, ill work on another icon.

i suppose its relative. cb4 was boxy, and although it didnt use any tables, the boxiness gave an effect that it did so, which gave me an impression that it was outdated.

oh hmm, im still confused. =( there is no filler myspace layout image.

i decided to do away with the boxes, since when im adding new sections ill have to recalculate the width to make sure everything will still fit.

the screenshots are automatically being replaced as i type.

ok. what ill try adding some colors to the navbar and see. you know, cb4.5 is very similar to cb3 and cb2, which is interesting because when i launched cb4, everyone hated it because it looked so different. and now people are wanting it back. =(

i suppose its relative. cb4 was boxy, and although it didnt use any tables, the boxiness gave an effect that it did so, which gave me an impression that it was outdated.

I think the boxyness of it made it more organized in my opinion. This new one seems more downgraded-ish. Its like the layouts swapped and this one should be 4 and the last one would be 4.5

Odd as it is, the only change I like is the width change, but that's really only because I have a 9-inch screen and feel like a page is finally maximized for me, but I would HATE to have a horizontal scroll-bar.

That said, I do think cB took a small step back if the goal was the professional look. I don't like the underlines on the navigation at the top, and much preffered the shaded-box style of the previous layout.

But! And I really hope this doesn't come off as a oh-I-should-say-something-nice-because-I'm-afraid-to-offend (do people still think that of posts?) comment, but I am glad for the nighttime skin. Unless, of course, it's always been around in this version and I...never noticed.

the screenshots are automatically being replaced as i type.

ok. what ill try adding some colors to the navbar and see. you know, cb4.5 is very similar to cb3 and cb2, which is interesting because when i launched cb4, everyone hated it because it looked so different. and now people are wanting it back. =(
oh can you give me a screenshot?

Aww i actually liked cb4, just wasn't digging the new standards for layouts when cb4 launched.

i agree that the navbar is somewhat cluttered (with teh ads). in all honestly, the ads are strategically placed there to maximize exposure. youll notice that now, we only have a banner ad (with the link ad to the right) and a 300x250 ad littered on destination pages (ie layout code page). before, we had a lot more ads everywhere (including a skyscraper ad on destination pages that sort of messed this up. since the ads now are getting more exposure, well have less ads everywhere else.

the width makes it look a little more web 2.0 ish, which would technically be a step forwardin design. the "in" thing in web design nowadays is going for the bigger, wider look (e.g. - facebook). if anything, we're a little late on the trend.

the problem is that it's not as functional for some people as it is for others. though, i am glad that you're trying to move forward; i found it amazing that there are some people out there still on 800x600 (throw out your monitors already!). as for the issue of people resizing their windows, i guess it just depends on how small you resize. i've always resized my browser, but never smaller than ~2/3 of my widescreen just 'cause i hate vertical windows; therefore, this is no problem for me.

i think a good compromise would be to keep the "fast reply" aligned to the left of the screen and make it smaller (around 2/3 of the current size would be ok i think). that way, people could fast reply without scrolling horizontally.

i agree with what was said about the aqua color; i much prefer the old duller blue, which imo is more professional looking as well. the banner is in disaray purely because everything (text, graphics, ads) is within a white bg. i think some kind of framework/color change would be needed to organize it.

A lot of websites on the internet go through different skins, and themes until they find one that suites their site best. I think a lot of people missed the part about there being more links to the navigation in the future. I'm guessing right now, this is only phase one of the changes that are going to be made. The horizontal scroll is web 2.0 a lot of designers are starting to make layouts in this way. As for the users, they are going to have to be more accepting to change. And realize that not everything stays the same forever. Don't fret over something as small as a horizontal scroll or some extra pixels on a forum site. There are things that you can do on your end to adjust to the new changes. You could get a widescreen monitor, or update your graphics card to adjust to higher screen resolutions than the current site's size (1024x768). My screen resolution is 1440x900 I can still have cb windowed and everything still looks fine. Hopefully you guys will just move past this bitching stage, and accept that our "active" community accounts for about 5% of cb's users. Seems like the other 95% don't mind the change to come here and bitch about a horizontal scroll.

Posted by: paperplane Nov 15 2008, 12:33 PM

Some of us have new computers with high resolutions, and this width is still hella annoying. As for horizontal scrolls being web 2.0...I really don't think that's the case. Styles may change, the impracticality of having to scroll two directions has not. I don't know what makes you think that because some people don't post, it makes the rest of our input less valuable. I'm all for changes, but the width is unnecessary.

Posted by: change Nov 15 2008, 12:36 PM

Paperplane,

I didn't say that because the active community is a small number that the input it provides is invaluable. So please don't put words into my mouth.

If you recall from Jusun's post about adding more to the navigation bar. How can you have 13+ links and a search bar on one line without the width of the site being larger?

Posted by: paperplane Nov 15 2008, 01:50 PM

No. Quote it? I really don't care about anything but the forums, and accordingly skimmed most of his posts.

When you have active forums that help the site survive, you can't disregard how changes to other parts of the site effect the forums or their users.

Posted by: Deetard Nov 15 2008, 03:38 PM

this has nothing to do with web 2.0. web 2.0 is now used more for portfolio websites, and instead of scrolling vertically, it's the new thing to scroll it horizontally. this, however, is an online forum. stop with the web 2.0 bullshit.

Posted by: brooklyneast05 Nov 15 2008, 03:52 PM

i don't think it makes sense to say that only 5% of the community dislike it becuase only 5% are giving feedback. just because other people don't come to the forum doesn't mean they like it any better than the ones who do. i go to sites all the time that change stuff and it annoys me but i don't go to their forum becuase i don't regularly frequent their forum in the first place. it's not like not giving input automatically means you like it.

i was registered on this site a year before i even realized there was a forum. if i had gotten on and there was a horizontal scroll bar i would have thought it was annoying as hell but i wouldn't have known where to complain about it on the forum or even thought to.

i also don't think anyone should have to go buy a monitor so they won't have horizontal scroll bars all the time but yeah...

i hope a thin version is still going to come out.

^ yes we do. and we now have mocha / latte / and a new nighttime version. will still need to forum-ize them.

Posted by: micron Nov 21 2008, 07:25 AM

just wanted to say a couple of things.

for those who only use the forums, i agree that people might consider the new width a bit too wide (or is it because theyre accustomed to the old width). but for everyone else (that actually uses the site like the layouts section), i would think they would prefer the new width over the old one, considering the browsing is much better with the larger thumbnails.

unfortunately, its true that only a very very few actually use the forums. so when i was doing 4.5 redesign, i did not optimize it for the forums. logical would dictate that i should optimize the site for the majority of the people who come here. that being said, the majority come here really for everything OUTSIDE of the forums, which is much better suited with the larger widths.

another factor that i took into consideration with the re-deisgn is, less than 1% of computers today actually have their resolution set to 800x600 (this was windows 95 / 98 days). previous to cb4.5, the site was actually optimized for 800x600. but then again, the last time i did a redesign was two years ago, when there was still around 10% that actually used that resolution. considering now that people dont use that resolution, coupled with the fact that widening it would make browsing the layouts much better, theres no reason why the site should still be optimized for 800x600. with the redesign, its optimized for 1024x768, meaning for those who have 1024x768 resolution and greater, there shouldnt be a scroll bar at all. (if there is, please let me know, this is an error that can be fixed.)

obviously, this site wasnt designed to have a horizontal scroll bar. however, for those who STILL use 800x600 or like their browser windowed to a window smaller than 1024x768, you WILL see one. what i dont understand is that most of you probably have facebook, and facebook's width is also optimzied for 1024x768 for the same reason i mentioned above (about the lack of people using 800x600 today), and increasingly, youll see other sites moving on to optimize for 1024x768. like i said, theres no reason why it should be any lower, especially if the new wider width will help with the overall presentation of a site.

so i dont know. im taken aback by those who pretty much bash or complain or say that they dont care for anything else but the forums, and demand that there be something to suit their personal needs irregardless of the circumstance (the fact that they are a small minorty, which i do hope for their sake they did not realize, considering how they came off). maybe it would be understanable if its coming from our younger members since they have a lot to mature anyhow, but one would think theyd know better when theyre like 18.

that said, i will most likely come out with a thinner version (at least for the forums anyway), but im not going to make any promises. and bashing really doesnt make anything better. not that i have any problem with criticisms, but if youre going to criticize please do so conctructively.

Posted by: brooklyneast05 Nov 21 2008, 08:23 AM

oh ok

so are we not going to use cb designers banners anymore on the top in place of the add like what was first proposed?

Posted by: paperplane Nov 21 2008, 08:35 AM

Facebook is portioned off so that when you have your screen windowed, it doesn't matter whether half of the site is on there. But when you try to read forum posts that take up 2/3 of the screen, there is an annoyingly large amount of right-left scrolling to be done. It's a long way to read across in general; no blog optimized for 1024x768 is going to have the text go across nearly the whole width of the page. After all, we may not be stupid enough to still be viewing in 800x600, but it makes a lot of sense not to have the browser window maximized at all times.

I don't really know how you can expect to make changes for the silent majority and not get complaints from the vocal minority when the changes are to our disadvantage.

If most people don't use the forums, and those of us who do are complaining, why can you not just do whatever you want with the front page and make the forums narrower?

ps irregardless is a double negative

Posted by: ChaoticHeartCrash Nov 21 2008, 10:18 AM

I still keep getting bad query on the tracker.

..i dont really care how the site looks. Its fuctional, and I didn't notice the width change. I'm on a wide screen laptop everything is wide.

It's kind of pointless to bitch and complain about something that provides a free service for alot of people. Sure, feedback on how you feel about something is ok, but is it really helping to whine that YOU don't get YOUR way?

If most people don't use the forums, and those of us who do are complaining, why can you not just do whatever you want with the front page and make the forums narrower?
ps irregardless is a double negative

because they are considered radicals :] who have probably never had their way in a democracy :]

oh ok
so are we not going to use cb designers banners anymore on the top in place of the add like what was first proposed?

yes we will, sorry for the delay. i agree, it IS an eyesore. in the past, cb never had any ads on the front page and i would like to keep it that way. =)

uniformity is important. if i understand correctly, images can be shrunk via css relative to their original dimensions (ie 75%). ill read up on this and if this is the case, youll get your daytime thin version.

I still keep getting bad query on the tracker.

On Firefox, Mac.

But if you're still in the process of fixing this, then please just disregard this post.

oh thanks for notifying me, ill fix this shortly. its because macs and linux doesnt have the font arial. ill have to work around it using css.

I read through this but I don't know if I got everything, but when are we getting the skins back?

And everyone that's mad about the width, for now when you go on Createblog hold the Ctrl key and use the scroll thing on the mouse and scroll down one and it will shrink everything a bit and it's like having the old width.

the styles are back in the main site, but not yet on the forums.

also, the zoom option is pretty interesting, although i must say that the font is a bit too small for my liking when its zoomed out 75%. how do you people who want a thinner version feel about this? maybe itll be easier just to make the fonts a tad bit bigger so that ill look fine on 75%.

Posted by: Gigi Nov 24 2008, 03:47 AM

Hmm, well everything else looks smaller too including avatars and pictures, emoticons, etc. We should go for one or the other and not a weird middle compromise. It does look good though.

Posted by: hi-C Nov 24 2008, 10:30 AM

Can we get the "My Controls View New Posts My Assistant Live Chat 0 New Messages" row of links to appear in the non-forum parts?

Also, I don't think the font needs to be any bigger for those who zoom out. If they do that that's their fault.

Posted by: paperplane Nov 24 2008, 01:21 PM

Yeah, I forgot you could zoom. Ok, problem solved. See, I am compromising :)
But yes, it probably would be nice if the font were a bit bigger to compensate

Posted by: micron Nov 24 2008, 06:05 PM

^ hey did you try zooming out on mozilla. it seems better than IE.

zoom out once

zoom out twice

Posted by: Deetard Nov 24 2008, 06:06 PM

doesn't work on mac. problem not solved.

Posted by: Tomates Nov 24 2008, 06:07 PM

wait how can you zoom?

download firefox if safari doesnt have a zoom function.

QUOTE(Tomates @ Nov 24 2008, 06:07 PM) *
wait how can you zoom?

for IE: page menu -> zoom (or bottom right corner)
for firefox: view menu -> zoom

Posted by: micron Nov 25 2008, 05:15 PM

surprise surprise, guess what youtube's new width is? rolleyes.gif

(told you so, about sites increasingly moving to optimize for 1024x768.)

Posted by: brooklyneast05 Nov 25 2008, 05:18 PM

yeah and people are usually watching a video, which doesn't require you to see the whole width of the layout anyway for those people who like to minimize windows. they can watch just the video. unlike a forum where you have to view the whole width to read responses/reply.

just sayin, they prob don't think of it the same way.

Posted by: micron Nov 25 2008, 05:21 PM

^ like i said before, this site isnt primarily a forum website. its a layout website. and like videos, for layout thumbnails (and browsing), bigger is better.

on another note, would you like it if the side column (profile info next to each post) was wider to make the post column thinner? this i can do right away.

I always use firefox and it looks fine, but if you were offering I certainly wouldn't object to bigger font for zooming purposes.

I agree with JC. and yes, place do whatever you can to make the post column thinner. Any way to get the fast reply thinner too?

Posted by: micron Nov 25 2008, 05:41 PM

^ hows this (expanded the side columns from 160px to 200px)? the fast reply form didnt change with the widened width.

Posted by: micron Nov 25 2008, 10:51 PM

minor update to the layout browse,

when you hover your mouse over the layout screenshot, youll now see the submit date, view count, fav count, and comment count. have tested on ie7, firefox2, and chrome. please let me know if it breaks anything (if youre using a different browser). remember to refresh your browser to make sure the new css is loaded first! =)

Posted by: LoveToMySilas Nov 26 2008, 06:34 PM

I actually like the new look alot. Its a lot easier to find things, imo. ph34r.gif You forgot to add, "bring back arcade", to your to do list.
