QUOTE
The concept for Final Fantasy XIII's battle system is to maintain the strategic nature of command-based battles. The system stemmed from a desire to create battles similar to those found in Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Like those in Final Fantasy XII, enemies are integrated into the world environment. However, unlike Final Fantasy XII, battles do not take place in the same "dimension", but rather a short flash transports players to a new battle screen, separate from the main playing world. The Active Time Battle (ATB) system will return, but it will work differently from its predecessors. Users will be able to chain large numbers of commands together in order to achieve attack bonuses.

Main Playable Characters

* Lightning (ライトニング Raitoningu) — The protagonist of the game, Lightning is deemed an adversary of humankind, having been chosen by the fal'Cie to bring about the end of the world. She is an agile fighter, who wields a sword that can transform into a gun, called "Blaze Edge". She is described as a female version of Cloud Strife.

* Snow Villiers (スノウ・ヴィリアース Sunou Viriāsu) — Leader of Team Nora and a l'Cie, Snow Villiers is a sturdy man whose mannerism is reputed to resemble that of a cowboy. He is blonde and has a well-built body. Snow uses his bare hands to fight, but his weapon is actually his coat. In battles, patterns will appear on his coat.

* Oerba Dia Vanille (ヲルバ=ダイア・ヴァニラ Woruba Daia Vanira) — A young and spirited girl, Vanille is a citizen of Pulse and ostensibly a subject of great interest to both the Sanctum and the resistance group led by Snow Villiers. She carries a heavy burden she is not initially aware of. She wears a savannah-style outfit, and her weapon is called the Bind Rod, which has a head piece that looks like a pair of antlers. Its body contains four long wires with hooks that deal damage to enemies by latching on and pulling.

* Sazh Katzroy (サッズ・カッツロイ Sazzu Kattsuroi) — A middle-aged man with dark skin and afro hair. He owns a baby Chocobo that lives in his hair. He is described as a gentle person who is easily reduced to tears. He fights with two pistols that can be combined into a rifle.

* Hope Estheim (ホープ・エストハイム Hōpu Esutohaimu) — A young boy with silvery-blonde hair who along with his mother belonged to the group of exiles carried in the train that Lightning stopped. He blames Snow for his mother's death. He wields boomerangs in battle.

* Oerba Yun Fang (ヲルバ=ユン・ファング Woruba Yun Fangu) — A wild-looking dark-haired woman with a large tattoo on one arm and a mark of the l'Cie on the other. She initially works for the Sanctum, and uses spears as her weapon of choice.

They need to go back to the old battle system!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Beenly Jan 27 2010, 06:13 AM

I kinda agree, but it's always nice to try something new. My friends from Japan told me that this game gave could give people mix reviews.

Just bought it.

How is it?

Posted by: synapse Mar 10 2010, 02:45 AM

bought it yesterday. I'm almost finished with the pulse fal-cie place. I haven't had much time to play. Always working. :P

I like the game, my fav is still viii, however this game has a good time with switching around the characters so you don't play as one. I don't like that you can only control the leader (unless you can change who the leader is). Favorite character as of right now is lightning. least favorite are Vanille, Snow, and Hope. Their attacks just seem slow...

Posted by: serotonin Mar 10 2010, 12:07 PM

My favorite character is lightning, too. I like Vanille and Hope, Snow reminds me too much of Wakka.

Posted by: synapse Mar 11 2010, 11:06 AM

What the f*** is the point of carrying a phoneix down if as soon as your leader dies, its game over?!

Posted by: serotonin Mar 11 2010, 08:05 PM

obviously the leader is holding the phoenix downs.

the first chapter? the battle system gets MUCH better and more complex starting chapter 3, introducing roles and paradigm shifts. the styles of how the characters fight will be more expanded.. did you get the strategy guide? it helps a lot. =P

i think snow's friend ( the one with the spiky red hair ) looks more like wakka and acts like him. my favorite character so far would have to be lightning ( because of how fast she is and how she attacks when she gets a fourth ATB gauge).

my least favorite would have to be snow. idk, he isn't that much playable compared to the other characters throughout the story.

that's why you have medics in your party to heal or you just need to use potions at the right time.

try a preemptive attack. if that doesn't work, then go back and sneak again.

This http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=928790&topic=54005879 is just hilarious. Gotta read it.

Posted by: CandyPop Apr 10 2010, 10:56 AM

^ I wish that I could sneak pass it. I'm at the Gripa Whitewood, and the area where I need to go to is blocked off. I can only gian access if I defeat it. I'm fighting with Lightning and Hope.

Posted by: Cum Apr 10 2010, 04:03 PM

maybe you could waste one deceptisol??

Posted by: CandyPop Apr 10 2010, 07:42 PM

I could but I actually have to fight it because the area is block off by these lazer things and it won't go away until I defeat it.

Posted by: Cum Apr 10 2010, 09:23 PM

i meant you could use the deceptisol shroud to help you get a preemptive strike.

Posted by: CandyPop Apr 11 2010, 06:23 AM

Oh, I see. I'll try that soon.
~Thanks

Posted by: Cum Apr 13 2010, 09:41 AM

damn those fcking long guis and shaolong guis

Posted by: Uronacid Aug 5 2010, 12:47 PM

This game was horrible.

Posted by: Uso Aug 5 2010, 12:59 PM

why??

Posted by: Cum Aug 5 2010, 01:55 PM

I can understand that it's not like other FF games in the series, but it offered something different than the others.

Posted by: Uronacid Aug 6 2010, 07:28 AM

Don't get me started...

1. The first several hours of this game are made up of a long, drawn-out tutorial. This wouldn't be an issue if the concepts they were introducing were complex, but the concepts were extremely easy to understand. In fact, the game practically plays itself anyway. This leads me to #2.

2. This game practically plays itself. There's so little skill involved while playing this game that it's borderline watching a movie. This wouldn't be a problem if it didn't have....

3. A predictable, borring, over-dramatic, stretched-out storyline... What are you left with at that point? People are oppressed by, something. Unlikely cast of heros attempt to save world. How could this get any worse? It can...

4. The characters are stupid:
Lighting: We have a chick who thinks she's the shit. Her heart has been harded by the loss of her sister and (spoiler, not...) she used to work for the "bad" guys.
Sazh: A black guy who sounds like he was dubbed by a white guy. He's also trying WAAAAAY to hard to act like a street rat. He's got a bird in his afro?!
Snow: The strong willed male character who believes he can do anything by facing problems head on.
Hope: The stupid boy who looses his mom and is trying to find his purpose... he's a downer.
Oerba: The stupid girl who always finds herself in trouble and never thinks anything of it. She might be retarded.

I liked FF12 and I was seriously looking forward to this game, but as trailers and gameplay videos appeared I became less and less interested. Anyway, we purchased the game for our PS3... and it sucked... as expected...

Playing FF is like watching Avatar for 50+ hours. Yeah, the graphics were incredible for a console title, but the storyline, gameplay, and characters are all predictable or borring.

Posted by: Cum Aug 6 2010, 09:46 AM

Yeah i agree with you for most of them, the storyline and the whole gameplay was the main weakness point of the game. Most ff fans just play the games for the storyline, but it actually gets a little bit better in the after game, ie. fighting shao long guis that actually require some strategy without pressing the auto-battle functions, fighting the last boss of the 64 side missions, fighting in the titan's area.

overall, yeah it wasn't that great, but you can't argue with how the music was soo good. :)

If you build your characters properly you can auto-battle 90% of the game. The stratgey is far to simple in this game. The majority of the stratgey revolves around changing your tactics when an enemy preforms a certain action. This does not keep me engaged... very little thinking involved. You're not outsmarting anything.

The music and graphics were fine. This title is a prime example of how you can produce a bad game with good aesthetics.
