I heard about this show in Nylon magazine so I checked it out online. Apart from those horrible southern accents, it looks pretty neat, it may be worth watching.

Anyone else interested?

Oh my god, the promotional campaign for this show has been CRAZY in New York. In one of the most notable cases, I actually saw a girl on a street corner talking about anti-vampirism (of course she worked for HBO).

But I'm really excited for it. I mean, Alan Ball, hello!

I love this series. The southern accents are pretty accurate for the Louisiana area (very annoying and drawn out).

Suki is so cute. I've already watched the first 3 episodes - can't wait till Sunday.

My friend watches this show and I have to admit the ads on the bus stations really interest me. whistling.gif My speakers aren't working atm, but I'll watch the trailer when I get the chance. I do love Vampires, though.

I bought the series (DVD) on sort of whim, after watching one episode (similar thing happened with Veronica Mars). I love this show. I even ordered HBO for the summer so that I can see new episodes.

There isn't much that Alan Ball is attached to that I don't like (although I think that American Beauty is pretty overrated).

I like that it isn't typical vampire fare. The southern setting is perfect - a fantastic mix of comfort and absolute creepiness. Lots of nudity, sex and drug use, which I wasn't prepared for but doesn't seem to be superfluous, as it's fitting for the series. The characters are diverse and the acting is very good, in my opinion. I'm definitely not a big fan of Anna Paquin, so it's saying much for me to state that opinion.

I'm looking forward to season two (although there is a favorite character of mine who more than likely will not be returning). I LOVE Eric and supposedly there will be much more of him this season.

Oddly, I prefer the series over the book (I've only read part of the first book).

@Janette (and I know the post is older), but the only similarity to Twilight I see is that both mythos have heavy vampire involvement. Sookie's telepathy was written long before Bella's "talent" was revealed (they both have "mental" type abilities). Harris isn't nearly the prude that Meyer is and although both books are pretty elementary to read, Harris is definitely more entertaining and her mythos translates well for an HBO series (it seems that HBO is even more lenient that the typical rated R fare).

Oh, pretty season 2 trailer:

i'm so sick of someone mentioning twilight whenever someone says vampire.

can we all just agree that stephanie meyer's "vampires" are not really vampires? maybe call them "manpires"?

I've lived in the south (Nashville) for nearly two years now and the southern thang grows on you (well, it grew on me at least). I might not have enjoyed the series as much had I first seen it while I lived in southern California. There is something seductive and at the same time, absolutely grotesque about the south. The LA setting is perfect for this series. I'm also very impressed with all of the actors' accents. The main vampire (Bill) actor is British. The actor who plays Eric (another main vampire) is Swedish and the dude that plays Jason is Australian.

The second season looks more interesting, as a whole, even though I very much love the first season.

Have I mentioned how friggin awesome I feel about Eric being a more prominent part of season 2 (Eric plays a major role in the books, from what I've read/heard).

Holy shit, ok I finally finished season one.

The acting is amazing plus the accent grew a little on me. Of course, I think I'd prefer it without the accent, but I must admit, it gives character.

Love Bill, love Eric more, on the fence about Jason, on the fence about Sookie (yeah, really can't get Rogue out of my head and seeing Rogue's tits was not on my top 10 list of tits I want to see... not that I keep a list).

Not going to start season 2 until it's done airing.

Which... will be a few months of waiting I guess. :(

Rebs - how was what you've read of the books? I'm thinking about reading it, but I don't want it to ruin the series for me.

The acting is definitely fantastic. It's weird, I actually loathe Anna Paquin as Rogue (for a variety of XMen comic fan girl reasons) so it's been very pleasing to see her in a role that better suits her.

I've read half of the first book and only snippets from the next 3. Honestly, I favor the series, which is very atypical of me (I usually prefer the books). The series has a better pace and I like the direction of the characters more. Eric becomes more and more prominent in the books and the series is following suit (which is awesome, because I friggin LOVE Alexander Skarsgård).

I'm only subcribing to HBO when the series is currently on. I like it THAT much.

Soooo, I started reading the books and am halfway through the 2nd book. Eric is, by far, my favorite character right now.

LOL ok so for some reason, I found this conversation between Sookie and Eric in the 2nd book really funny

QUOTE
"The reason I called you is that I need you to go to a party with me tomorrow night."

A long silence.

"Bill is no longer your bedmate? The differences you developed in Dallas are permanent?"

"What I should have said is, 'I need a bodyguard for tomorrow night.' Bill's in Dallas." I was smacking myself on the forehead with the heel of my hand. "See, there's a long explanation, but the situation is that I need to go to a party tomorrow night that's really just a . . . well, it's a . . . kind of orgy thing? And I need someone with me in case . . . just in case."

"That's fascinating," Eric said, sounding fascinated. "And since I'm going to be in the neighborhood, you thought I might do as an escort? To an orgy?"

"You can look almost human," I said.

"This is a human orgy? One that excludes vampires?"

"It's a human orgy that doesn't know a vampire is coming."

"So, the more human I look the less frightening I'll be?"

"Yes, I need to read their thoughts. Pick their brains. And if I get them thinking about a certain thing, andpick their brains, then we can get out of there." I'd just had a great idea about how to get them to think about Lafayette. Telling Eric was going to be the problem.

"So you want me to go to a human orgy, where I will not be welcome, and you want us to leave before I get to enjoy myself?"

"Yes," I said, almost squeaking in my anxiety. In for a penny, in for a pound. "And . . . do you think you could pretend to be gay?"

There was a long silence.

Damn woman, you've been busy. You've far outread me now. haha

I don't know, I just really like the series and everytime I start reading, I get bored or feel like I'm forcing the 'read. Might be timing though and my overwhelming lack of it lately. :x

You know, the more I watch the episodes, the more Jason grows on me.

lol yeah. I think the first two books were pretty interesting, then after that, I sort of just skimmed the rest by searching for "Eric" (torrented the e-books, lol) since he's, by far, the most interesting character.

I just don't like the books because they're told in first person, so you only get Sookie's point of view. The shows definitely did a lot with fleshing out the rest of the characters.

Plus, Sookie gets on my nerves.

I LOVE Eric. Alan Ball said that his little fascination with Sookie (in the show) will continue, so I'm totally happy. I like Bill too and sort of like the whole Buffy/Angel/Spike thing, I think she's meant to be with him (like I believe Buffy is supposed to be with Angel). Funny, dark hair vs light hair vampire too. haha I'm always pulling Whedon out of my ass.

Sookie, in the books, gets on my nerves. In the show, not so much. Sometimes I'm a little distracted by Anna Paquin's split (her teeth), but other than that, I'm fine with her portrayal (and she won an Emmy for the role, which is cool).

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Tara. Tara is very minor in the books, so I'm glad she's more visible in the series. Plus, that actress rocks. I love the speech she gives to the fat guy in the bar about her name.

Also, sad sad sad about Lafayette. He dies early in the second novel and I'm 99% sure it's him in Andy's car at the series one end. He's one of my favorites. :(
