QUOTE Example: You're debating the cause and effect of a given congressional policy based on a combination of sources; CNN, FoxNews, political websites, and the little you remember from your freshman politcal science seminar that you slept through every morning, thanks to a massive hangover. How valid is your argument versus someone has taken a personal interest in that given subject, and felt the urge to study it thoroughly, by reading up on relative issues, and a history of the given subject? QUOTE I'll use myself as an example: Prior to arriving to Iraq, I only knew what military publications reported, and then balanced that off of the information provided by major media outlets. Upon my arrival, one of my responsibilities entailed being thoroughly briefed on the political, social, and combative affairs of the forces occupying this theater. The only way to acquire the knowledge necessary for me to do my job in the intelligence field is to be exposed to information that require a 'top secret' clearance. Without posing as a threat to operational security, I'm able to debate what I know to be true (from experience and the knowledge I receive directly), and what's commonly portrayed. Where does the source of your information come from? What would you consider to be a 'valid' source of information? How does experience come into play when debating a given topic? |

people who announce they are leaving and then come back typically don't get respect. we all roll our eyes, say i told you so and move on. i don't even get where you're getting this idea, but it's backwards.

I don't know. Since I came back, I'm getting more respect. Not near as much as I'd like, but before I left, just about everyone hated me. Now I've got at least a few people that don't completely dislike me.

Now I've got at least a few people that don't completely dislike me. Agreed. Even if someone doesn't value a person they don't enjoy change. And everyone loves picking on me. If I was gone Steven couldn't be racist to anyone. |

Where does the source of your information come from? What would you consider to be a 'valid' source of information? How does experience come into play when debating a given topic? In academics, my sources typically come from the news, research from publications and interviews. When posting in a cB debate topic, it's typically from various internet sources which of course, you have to take with a grain of salt. I think that the most valid information comes from direct interviews from individuals who have experiences in the matter and from academic research. It really depends on the subject matter though. For example, if you're debating about the effect something might have psychologically, you'll probably draw from a variety of sources, including interviews from people who have experience either directly or through study. Also, what does leaving cB and coming back have to do with Brandon's topic? And why would you announce it? I know that JC has already responded with something similar, but generally, I have little to no respect for anyone who feels it necessary to make a huge PSA regarding leaving an internet forum. Just leave for goodness sake. If you come back, cool. If not, cool. |

Also, what does leaving cB and coming back have to do with Brandon's topic? On second thought, nevermind. I really don't want to sound rude or inconsiderate, but you do not seem to be getting my point/question and I'd much rather see people respond to the question(s) Brandon actually asked. (and yes, I understand that this is an old topic) |

Sadly now a days a lot of these news corporates tend to use "blogs" for a good amount of news. When it comes to news, it's simple.. you just need to cross reference. I trust BBC enough to depend on them, so I typically use them a lot more than other sources for my world current events.
