Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel committee said they wanted to support Mr Obama's approach

US President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The committee highlighted Mr Obama's efforts to support international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament.

Mr Obama - woken up with the news early on Friday - said in an address at the White House that he was "surprised and deeply humbled" by the award.

He said he did not feel he deserved to be in the company of some of the "transformative figures" who had previously received the award.

Speaking outside the White House, he said he would accept the prize as a "call to action".

There were a record 205 nominations for this year's peace prize. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Chinese dissident Hu Jia had been among the favourites.

Instead the committee chose Mr Obama, who was inaugurated less than two weeks before the 1 February nomination deadline.

There was widespread surprise at the committee's decision. While world leaders were largely supportive of the award, thousands of people have contacted the BBC with more sceptical views.

An estimated 75% of comment sent to the BBC expressed surprise at the award. Some said awarding the prize to Mr Obama was plain wrong, others that the decision had come too soon, before he had made any concrete foreign policy achievement.

If he actually accomplishes what he's trying to do then I say he deserves it, but for just attempting idk.

this sort of devalues everyone in the past who has ever won one now...

Ironic how in the past 30 days,
Obama successfully Pissed Iran off pretty bad.

"Good job! Heres the NPP!"

^how is that ironic?

it's ok guys. if you dislike obama getting the prize then you're not alone. the taliban feels the exact same way.

i think the committee wanted to do it to put pressure on him to carry out what he's started, and to him and show that they support his efforts at diplomacy and nuclear disarmament. i hope he does too.

Haha I meant it's ironic that he gets the Nobel Peace Prize right after the incident with Iran.

And I agree.
I don't think he's gonna get rolling anytime soon though.
He's been on what?
was it 5 vacations since January?

I think the fact that Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize already devalued the award quite a bit.

I find it kinda funny (not trying to make this sound bad or anything) how a lot of CBers were Pro-Obama and it seems like more are becoming anti-obama.
I was never really for obama in the first place.

Anyways i was astonished when he received the nobel piece prize. I dont why he did. He hasnt done anything to deserve it.

i dont think its about being pro obama or not. but the fact that many nobel peace prize winners have been rather unreasonable and more like a political farce, it just makes me put the nobel prizes at a much lower esteem than before. well, i mean, ghandi never got his award and was rejected five times.

Im not saying that being pro-obama got him the peace prize.
IT was a seperate note saying that many obama supporters HERE on cb dont seem to have differ in thoughts now.

Natalie, I think you misunderstood. Just because people disagree with Obama receiving the award, it doesn't mean that they are/have become anti-Obama. People can still support him and believe that it was premature.

I wasn't aware that people could win the Nobel Peace Prize for their "efforts." I thought it was given to people who actually accomplished something. I guess you learn something new everyday..

then through the darkness, it spoke the one word, that i shall hear forever more

the award is initiative based, not achievement based. many of its recipients were not successful in their activism, while others would not be successful until many years after being awarded.

Like...not relating to each other.

hope he got extra points for overthrowing democratically elected prime minister of japan, causing chaos in thailand, invading haiti, building a base in colombia, and using drone attacks in pakistan.
