NEW YORK (Reuters) - Police called to a Long Island man's house discovered the mummified remains of the resident, dead for more than a year, sitting in front of a blaring television set.

The 70-year-old Hampton Bays, New York, resident, identified as Vincenzo Ricardo, appeared to have died of natural causes. Police said on Saturday his body was discovered on Thursday when they were called to the house over a burst water pipe.

"You could see his face. He still had hair on his head," Newsday quoted morgue assistant Jeff Bacchus as saying. The home's low humidity had preserved the body.

Officials could not explain why the electricity had not been turned off, considering Ricardo had not been heard from since December 2005.

Neighbors said when they had not seen Ricardo, who was diabetic and had been blind for years, they assumed he was in the hospital or a long-term care facility.

Apparently, it's still possible to go totally unnoticed in this modern era >_>, although it's kind of scary to imagine the life this man lead that nobody wondered of his whereabouts since he (supposedly) died in December 2005.

I have been immediately reminded of this song after I finished reading the article, although Black Flag's TV Party could have been a solid candidate for the OST to the most morbid article of 2007 xP.

Wow, very morbid indeed. Poor guy, his absence wasn't noticed for so long. So he was all alone and didn't have family members (who cared)? =\

What puzzles me is that the police were called over a water pipe that busted, but not over a missing blind and diabetic 70 year old man that apparently lived alone and whom the neighbours assumed would be in some sort of medical center, yet they never bothered to check. ._.;

Aww, this is upsetting.
I don't think this would turn out to be a murder case; he probably just died of a heart attack while watching TV or something.

What really bugs me is how the electricity wasn't turned off when he didn't pay his bills for months. Could be that he was on autopay or something..?

Poor guy.

Wow. That's absurd.

You'd think that people would come over to check when he didn't answer the phone or pay the bills after just half a year or something.

If I found the body, I would have screamed my head off.

That's freaky.

No clue, although his ability to keep his bills paid up to date from beyond the grave is certainly commendable.

Wow, I read about this a couple of days ago. I can't believe no one even checked up on him to see how he was doing, or at least called or something. mellow.gif
I'd hate to grow up lonely and forgotten.
