Guantanamo Bay Rating Options

As President Obama comes into office, one of the first executive orders he made was the shut down of Guantanamo Bay (terrorist Prison). Im torn between thinking what is right. If you think about the factor about America's image, we dont want to be seen as a torturing country, where on the other side (the Republicans) argues with criticism that the terrorist should be kept there and if Guantanamo is closed, where would they go?

John McCain would have closed Guantanamo.

If you establish this base on the soil of a foreign country, away from any known jurisdiction, the purpose portrayed (whether accurate or not) is that you're trying to evade American and international law. To be clear, Guantanamo is not Abu Ghraib and is far from being the American concentration camp (in its historically charged context, anyways) that many have tried to make it out to be. However, we---well, you (I'm not American) don't merely sign the Geneva Conventions; you've made it a condition that other countries follow your suit in adhering to their written code. And adhere you must.

Seriously, every detainee should be killed just to be safe? Are you consciously petitioning for America to be North Korea or Iran, or is this just something you have not examined further? My father defected from Iran for that reason. It is not a nice place to model yourself after.

In bold. I don't really care enough about it to research it. I just post this based on what I know from TV.

You do realize the base includes "suspected" terrorists right? There might be guilty people in there but a good amount are people who were unfortunate to get captured.

Plenty of people are held there without charges, no outside contact, no way to contact legal counsel, and for an undetermined amount of time. There have been no trials because techinically/legally they aren't suppose to be held to begin with. Also, in a time of national security concerns, apparently, you can just hold them just to be safe. How is America suppose to go out there defend our democratic country when it turns around and denies people the same things we want to protect? That we're trying to enforce on a country we just invaded?

Ethnic cleansing. Call it that.

That would make us the equivalent to the Nazis, the Rwandan Hutu militia, the dictators, and everything our Constitution does not stand for.
