I want to enlist into the Air Force?
(Yes, I seriously just asked that.) |

Ok, I SO don't mean for this to sound sarcastic, but... just tell them? Are they vocally opposed to you enlisting?

Ok, I SO don't mean for this to sound sarcastic, but... just tell them? Are they vocally opposed to you enlisting? Some parents are very opposed to their children's enlisting in the armed forces. Of course, your solution, while simple, is probably the most brilliant advice one could give. |

With my mom, it's up in the air. She may be for it, but she may also be against it.
I told my dad already, and he encourages it. He even said he'd go with me to the recruiter's. He just advises that I don't do the same thing he did where he was in the Navy and ended up with a job where the navy didn't do him any good. I'm really wanting to enlist myself for college payments and to become more confident in myself. Sorry if that sounds weird towards the end. |

That doesn't sound weird at all. I have a friend who enlisted because he couldn't afford college if he hadn't. He's now a successful doctor. Granted, his family had to move off and on for a long while, but in the end, it was all very worth it.
Chances are, telling your mother will be more difficult. I know that if my son came home and told me that he planned on enlisting, I'd get emotional. He's my little boy, you know? (well, literally, he's only nine now hehe) I would tell your mom and allow her time to adjust. This is a huge decision that will impact more than just yourself. :) |

Unless you have some issue at home that you need to take care of (sick parent, outstanding debt, etc), I suggest you just go ahead and do it. I didn't tell my parents I was joining the Marines, I just did it. I told them after I did the paperwork.

Well, I don't turn eighteen until September, hence why I'd have to tell my mom. And in my opinion, I'd be doing my mom a favor seeing as how she and I only argue about every little thing.

Just tell them. You don't sound too bright, so chances are you don't have the IQ needed to be a pilot, and you'll probably just end up dicking around all day and being a mechanic. Tell your mom you're probably not going to die unless you end up mistaking nuts and bolts for candy.

You : "Hey mom, what do you think about the airforce?"
And listen to how she feels about it, and then you can either say you want to or you can wait for another time. I think thats how I would do it. |

I agree with everyone else: just tell her. If you try to be sneaky about it she's going to be more angry when you tell her...

Hell, I type more proper than quite a significant number of people who use the internet now'a'days. Lame. |

He's just hatin' kinda like when illriginal insinuated you were an idiot for typing "ohkay"--that sort of hatin'. if you really want to join the air force, just explain it in the shortest and clearest possible way to your mom. if you're doing it just to escape her, i'd advise you to rethink your choices. |

I don't think they will be against it, and oddly enough, the air force is the "safest" choice amongst all of the branches. Being that you come from a military family, she might not see anything wrong with it. Both of my parents are against me wanting to be a firefighter, so trust me I know the feeling. Right. Tell me what's wrong about my English skills then. How do I not sound too bright? I'm going to towards a Spanish major in college. |

tell her you're gay first and then say that you're not really, but you're enlisting. enlisting in the air force will be easier for her to bare.
