Easy to use, user friendly, and really big screens. Oh. And they have underwater cases. This is more of a... Tourist-y camera.
Got it. Thanks.
Thanks for making this topic. Only one Canon made the list
I have a Canon Powershot http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=11157. I've it pretty much since it came out. I might to Germany this summer for an exchange and I'm taking my camera with, even though I'm scared someone will steal it.
^ Ha ha, yeah well, I've never really used Canon so I can't say I recommend them. Even though I know Nikon and Canon are perhaps one of best camera manufactures around.
You want to add the SD500 to the list?
Digital: $200-300 (Usually.)
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=11774 (Really small and cute and comes in 4 colors. Great beginner camera. Battery lasts a really long time too.)
Added it. Thanks for making it really easy to put in too.
I'm planning to buy the black http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25552.
I love how Nikon's have the spinning wheel thing to scroll through pictures.
The one I saw had a discount and it was $299.99
VERYYY helpful! was looking for something like this.
thanks!
^ Good to hear that this thread is actually helping.
oh i have one:
Digital: $300-$400
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1223 -- 8.0 megapixel, I love this camera, it has many modes for the type of picture you want to take (if you want to get fancy)
ex. 'candle' for taking pictures mainly with candles & 'Cuisine' for taking photos mainly associated with food, etc.
plus, the modes are really easy to access, it has its own 'button' for all the modes
hope this help (you dont have to put all the info)
Oh wow. I've been thinking about purchasing a new camera. Thank you so much -- this is so helpful!
I'd like to contribute a website that I find useful a lot.
http://www.dpreview.com/
It's all about digital photography as far as I know, and it keeps a frequently updated list of up-and-coming cameras as well as newly-released cameras. It also has in-depth reviews from pros and reviews from people who actually bought the camera, timelines, forums, a buying guide, glossaries... and just loads of stuff. :)
It's also not just about cameras. It has some information on lenses (but since I'm not yet an experienced dSLR user, I can't really say too much about their information on it)... and just news for digital photographers in general.
By the way, the point-and-shoot Canon SD1000 looks sexy.
I'd also like to express my surprise that the Canon Digital Rebel XT (EOS 350D) and the Canon Digital Rebel XTi (EOS 400D) aren't up there...
They're both super-nice cameras, though for me the XT is plenty sufficient as it is. The XT's screen is smaller and it also has this mini-screen above the LCD screen that shows the stats of the picture that you're about to take. For the XTi, it's only got one giant LCD screen, which = slight battery burning so it's best to have an extra battery around.
They're both also extremely lightweight, and though the XTi has two more MP than the XT, ... I don't think it makes that big of a difference. I'm not doing anything professionally. However, I have a friend who's a big Nikon user (she has freaking like six cameras, which aren't all dSLRs, but anyway... they're all Nikon), and after lengthy conversation and testing out cameras with people, we've decided her Nikon dSLRs are more hardy than the two Canon dSLRs I've used.
Nice, thanks a lot Ruth. Got that all added.
This is an awesome thread; I love photography, and this listing is quite helpful. Thank you very much!
Pointless thread.
www.dpreview.com is all you need anyways.
It is my firm belief that almost all the Canon digital cameras (that are >3.2 mp) are AMAZING quality cameras for people who are looking for great-quality snapshots, self-portraits, and digital photography practice.
Thank you!:)
I'm going to have to save up like HELL..
Canon SD1000 Powershot Digital Camera <--
olympus e series is great.
Unless you have legacy lenses or special needs, i'd suggest the e series for entering the DSLR catagory.
e500s are pretty classic with a penta-mirror, and they go pretty cheap now.
e410s have a more consumer spin, and are more compact. also has live view. I'd suggest this one for a good "point and shoot" DSLR.
e510s are e410 + image stab, and a few other differences that make it more pro-style oriented (although it's not really a "pro" camera, as far as those classifications go)
the e330 is pretty cool if you want something different, because of it's porro mirror; but the e410s and 510s have live view now, and have a more traditional look.
e-1s are more pro, and are going cheap, but they're only 5 MP. new new e-3 (or p-3, whatever they decide to call it) should drop soon. depending on what sort of pro work you want to do, it may be for you.
all of the e series uses the 4/3rds system, which i favor. you can really see size savings in the new 410 and kit lenses, and image quality is pretty good.
if you're looking into DSLRs and don't have legacy lenses (and don't plan on using above ISO 400 that much), then the 4/3rds system is what i recommend
^ I agree. I have an e-500 and LOVE IT. And I was able to get it at a great value online. I have a 50mm lens and 14-45 mm. Looking in to getting 35mm soon. The quality of the pictures I'm able to get are amazing as well as the colors. The only issue I've come across is with noise. I rarely shot at a high ISO so it's no problem for me. But if you're one of the ones who do going with Nikon or Canon may be a better choice. The Pentax K100D performs pretty well at high ISOs too and it's great dsrl.
yea, i got an e500 too. it cost a fortune compared to cheap P+S cams, but is a pretty good bargain for the dSLR range.
still shooting with the kit lenses; might look to upgrade later.
how's that 50 mm working out for you?
Very, very well. It's a real nice glass. The pictures I have been able to take with it are stunning. Well worth the 400 bucks I paid for it.
I just got a Canon Powershot SD550. I'm in love.
yea, i heard that 50 mm was a real sweet piece of glass.
i like doing macro work a lot; so a macro lens will probably be my first non-kit lens, but the 400 bucks for the 50 is making me think the 35 might be for me.
i've been using my 40-150, which is pretty sharp for a kit lens, for my marco stuff right now. get an alright mag, but nothing compared to what a real marco lens should deliver.
if you do get that 35, drop me a line and tell me how it compares to the 50, could you?
you should add to the DSLR
the Panasonic DMC-L1K and the Panasonic DMC-L10K
both on this page:
http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Cameras-Camcorders/Digital-Cameras/Lumix-Digital-SLR-Cameras.list.75048_11002_7000000000000005702
I want the L1 so badly.
Mmm... Any of you new mods wanna fill the new (and future) entries for me, please?
it is my favorite digital camera
http://www.canonsx100.com
the Canon S3 IS is already on the list, but what about the S5?
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=15207
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006I5JL?ie=UTF8&tag=dpreviewbuybox-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00006I5JL is my God. Very, very pricey, but damn, it can take some amazing pictures. It's about $1,300, depending on where you get it.

KRYO PICKS CAMERAS WORK IN f**kING PROGRESS
CHEAP AND SMALL SHIT
This section applies to you if:
Price: $<200-~$400
lol i actually don't want to buy a new camera .. but I was just passing
by and had a thought of posting something here .. so I have a Fuji Film
Fine pix ... but I'm not really into Fujifilm .. you cant always get
what you want .. I recently saw the Sony OX series i think .. u know ..
the orange OX logo ... seems a nice serie .. well after all its Sony .
Canon is also a very competitive challenger .. Pentax is the kind of
brand for the old camera's that are still used now .. the manual
ones ... I don't really like digital cameras .. I feel they are made
for the people that "aren't into photographing" .. they just want to
keep a picture of nice memories .. I don't know what do they call the
big cameras .. the ones that are usually manuals ... i dunno ... the
ones where u can adjust the zoom by just turning the lens .. a long
lens. So Canon Sony Pentax own the market ... all the Pentax series are
very rare to be found .
me gott webcamm but dunnoo wth webcamm at rite now..
wat realli cheapp WEBCAM..?
webbcamm eazy 2 hookk upp orr wat..?
kryo/iwanthugs's post was a masterpiece. hahaha don't forget to add the new addition to the nikon family: NIKON D60. I have it :D it's got the same body as the D40 and is identical to the D40x but has a built in stop-motion program. totally useless if you have sony vegas or any other video editing program..or even imageready.
This is very helpful!
Although I would also recommend my Nikon Coolpix 8700

f**k f**k WHY IS THIS TOPIC KEEP GETTING BUMPED. >_____>
edit: wtf. his post dissapeared again.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/583987-REG/Canon_2764B004_EOS_5D_Mark_II.html is out next month people! Talk about "PURE sex". Also, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/580464-REG/Canon__EOS_50D_SLR_Digital.html, which I still don't know anything about LOL.
I personally just bought a http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484813-REG/Canon_1888B002_EOS_1D_Mark_III_Digital.html and played with a display version of the 5D Mark II. Let me tell you all, if you have that kind of money and don't need a large FPS, get the Mark II. It's such an amazing camera, and the one I played with didn't even have the newest firmware or anything, it was a "beta" model.
I got the Canon Rebel XSi a couple months ago and I love it :)
I've played around with other DSLRs (like Nikon d70s, canon rebel xt and xti), and
the canon xsi is amazing.
i hate the XSi; it's a complete turn-off for those using any other canon DSLR. the switch from compact flash to SD was just a marketing trend to grab people from cheap point-and-shoots.
and this thread really needs to be updated. those are some old cameras on the list.
just bought :3
^ Is it as good as it seems?
wow, nikon is really going after the hipsters who want to look PROFESHUNUL with a DSLR market with the Dx000 series
Also, I've discovered what I'll be buying next
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=19356
HAY! Does anyone have any suggestions for a point-and-shoot that does well in low-light conditions? I've read reviews and whatnot...Canon S90, Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR, and other CNET reviews :x. But! Other than the Canon S90, I haven't held or used any of these cameras myself.
So, I was hoping ya'll have. (: I'm not too camera-savvy, but I can learn the basics. Have you guys tried anything that seems to fit well? Not just the two listed above...anything, really. :D
hipsters don't shoot nikon. it's too mainstream.
holgas and polaroids.
