Forums _ Debate _ Best State to Live In

Posted by: tungmyBANANA Dec 7 2007, 07:47 PM

What's your opinion on the "best" state to live in the United States? The answer is no doubt California. Why? We have a diverse climate and geography. We have the most diversity in ethnicity from 58 different countries. We have better beaches than any other coast. We also have one of the most productive agriculture areas in the world and the largest in any of the U.S. We also have great aerospace, petroleum, and computer and information technology. Our economy ranks in the top ten in the world. Oh yeah, it doesn't hurt that the majority of people in California are far more better looking. We got Los Angeles, and the sandy San Diego beaches, and the ever clear warm temperature in the Bay Area.

Why not New York?

i've never been to any, so.

Are you kidding me... New Jersey is where it's at. I must admit though, I think I am a Californian trapped in A Jersey Boys body.

How so?

If you are going to claim a state, at least give your reasons.

Climate diversity - Texas has it
Ethnic Diversity? Have you been to Houston?
Beaches, we lose.
We have tons of agriculture too, and we have NASA and the MD Anderson Cancer Research which is a world renowned cancer treatment center (in Houston).
From what I've heard y'alls weather rivals ours for warmth.
We're bigger than y'all.
We use y'all.
We use the death penalty. If someone kills a Texan, we kill them back.
We're more affordable to live at.
We're not smug.

I'm sorry but New Jersey's New York's armpit.

I like that, I vote for Texas.

I would say my own state but I personally don't like it. We have a few cities that are the top 10 list of safest cities to live in. We have some pretty decent schools for sports and medical... yea its not that great.

NEW YORK CITY is where it's at. But that's not a state.

ph34r.gif

No but seriously. New York as a state is pretty cool. We got quiet suburbs, small towns/cities, and the best city in the world. Transportation is really easy to and from the far reaches of the state to the hub. We get all four seasons. The best water.

Posted by: deplorable Dec 8 2007, 02:57 PM

Posted by: MissHygienic Dec 8 2007, 03:00 PM

I vote for California, not Southern California and not Oakland. Nice scenery; I don't hear them say, "car" like "cah"; great shopping; great schools; the environment in California is much nicer than places in the East coast.

I hope Cali gets decimated in an earthquake and separates from continental U.S.

Just playin'. I love California (I was born there).

Why do most immigrants go to California as their top choice when moving to the U.S?

Posted by: MissHygienic Dec 9 2007, 01:49 AM

Because they arrive by boats, and they have to land somewhere on the coast. Angel or Ellis Island.

Posted by: tungmyBANANA Dec 9 2007, 01:53 AM

Fair enough.

I think California and Texas right now are very close to a tie.

If you'd like tremendous variety of geography (deserts to redwood forests, mountains, beaches and lakes), great weather, interesting variety of people, good economy, and a mostly left-learning philosophy, come to California.

If you like the geography of prairies, plains, piney woods and gulf beaches, really hot/cold weather, cowboy consciousness coupled with a few cultural centers, and a mostly right-learning philosophy (its death penalty executions are four times as high as any other state), visit Texas.

Posted by: Steven Dec 9 2007, 01:56 AM

People land in California because it takes up the bulk of the western coast. Also there's a lot of work for immigrants. Texas has the same issue. We get all the walk-overs and the certified lawn mowers.

Legal in what way?

I vote not Georgia. Georgia sucks pretty much every way.
Having never been to Texas or California, I'm not sure my vote for either one would be particularly valid, but I'd be way more interested in going to California than I would Texas. Beaches, better climate (though really I hate the heat, so I might lose either way), I'm very liberal (so the whole high death penalty thing is not a selling point for me), and other more important things I'm sure.

Texas weather is either too hot, or too cold. In California the weather is neither. It's usually warm. If it's winter, the temperature won't be too cold, and during summer, it won't be too hot. That's what makes California wonderful.

I say North Carolina when it comes to weather. It's been years since we had a tornado or a earthquake or any bad weather in Winston-Salem. Now other cities gets bad weather so I guess you can't escape that right?

I agree with California being the best state when it comes to diversity but it's the weather in some places that bothers me. North Carolina is a great place to retire. Georgia is a great place for education and finding good jobs

So I have to say Georgia is the best place if I had to pick one but I think a lot of places are great.

What?!? Have you looked at the national rankings lately? So no, they're not second to last anymore, but that hardly makes it great. I haven't checked our unemployment rate lately, but good god Georgia isn't the "best place" next to much of anywhere.

NY is okay.

High taxes.

Hot and humid summers.

Cold and dry winters.

Awesome during the Fall, though.

No beaches really, except on Long Island, but not much to see there.

If I'm not mistaken, Colonie, NY was voted the 6th safest city in the US. Kudos.

We are very industrial.

We're a bunch of assholes.

We have one of the greatest cities in the world. NYC, bitches.

We have the Adirondacks.

Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, even though I hate baseball, it's still pretty cool that we got it.

The show Law and Order takes place in NY.

As does King of Queens.

A gallon of gas costs 3.20 roughly.

James Brown started out his career playing in Albany.

Overall, I'd say NY is a pretty good place to be. If you can get past some of the bullshit.

California is the best state to live at. Not because I live here, but because there are tons of way to enjoy yourself. There are shopping malls, great restaurants as well as sight seeing and etcetera, and it never gets extremely cold nor extremely hot. There are tons of stars (mostly in Hollywood, but I heard Vanessa Carlton lives in San Francisco). There are the mountains and beaches (as said by Joss-eh-lime). There are pretty great schools that educate you well. So, Californa is where it's at! XD.gif Every states has its flaws, though.

Houston can have some nasty weather, but it's also loads cheaper to live here. Also, we have less strict laws on our every day lives. We have a set amount for tickets (not $197.50 at one light and $174.33 at a light a block away).

Is that true? I would figure places in California and cities such as Seattle to have a lot of restaurants (we have blocks of Starbucks and McDonald's) and to be the "fattest," then, but they were actually both on the "fittest" list. I never really knew how they got these statistics.

Is that true? I would figure places in California and cities such as Seattle to have a lot of restaurants (we have blocks of Starbucks and McDonald's) and to be the "fattest," then, but they were actually both on the "fittest" list. I never really knew how they got these statistics.

It is. I know a lot of people in Sugar Land are actually thin. There are a lot of thin people in Houston too, just a lot of fatties to go with the thinnies.

Posted by: Relentless Jan 1 2008, 04:28 PM

You know, I think they mean by fat people like overweight than the average person.

If you guys seen Supersize Me, they mentioned Texas isn't one of the overweight state anymore. Texas ended up being on #2 or #3. The #1 state was somewhere south east, like Pennsylvania or something. Somewhere around there, forgot.

CALIFORNIA FTW. xD

Posted by: MissHygienic Jan 1 2008, 04:31 PM

Well, that's something I never knew before. I never took their statistics to heart; I was just curious, but I found out more than I had thought.

But screw it, America is the fatty country.

But some people may not want all that stuff, Some people may want to live in like an area with nothing but farms and land, And that maybe considered the best to them :]

On that note, did you know that Americans are the only nationality that have their own dietary guidelines? Simply, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Explaining the guidelines would take forever, they have multiple .PDF files that are uber long. But as an overview, they just explain the importance of nutrition, background information on what you eat, how to read a food label, the food guide pyramid, and they have a separate section which stresses physical activity.

Oh, those. I thought it was something else, strangely.

Try telling that to the South or families who love microwavable, instant food. They fry everything there.

People in Iowa are so freakin' nice. It's not natural. Dubuque is really, really pretty. Whenever I go to Iowa I always drive through Dubuque.

You want to know why WI isn't a good state to live in? Besides the fact that there's a lot of country, and not a whole lot to do. And that the city is a really dangerous place to be (some parts of Madison and Milwaukee). Our unemployment rate is around 5%. We have lots of people on welfare. I haven't travelled a whole lot, but most places I've been are better than here. I understand why most people who move away, stay away. If you like the outdoors you might like it here, but usually the crappy weather ruins it.

All five have large, accessible, cultural, intellectual cities that generate large amounts of money for the entire state, all have sufficient amounts of greenery, all have seasonal changes that vary the weather and keep it enjoyable for all sorts of people for some of the year (yay accessibility), and all have large amounts of lakes and rivers for beach communities and water transport of goods. Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania have some of the top schools in the country (University of Chicago, Northwestern, University of Michigan, UPenn). The only natural disasters that regularly occur in these areas are tornadoes and they are still pretty rare. These states have both rural, quiet communities and towns with greater than 100,000 people. Though in most of these states the northern parts are covered in snow in the winter, one can still enjoy all that these states have to offer in the southern parts of them. Accessibility, money, schooling, variety, ethnic diversity, etc. All the good things a state has to offer. _smile.gif

Yup. Texas is a big state. I woke up this morning and it was in the 30s O.o A few days ago it was in the 20's. Keeping in mind we're in one of the warmer spots of Texas, too. It was colder further in the state.

I think that California is the best state to live in because the weather is pretty great. It doesn't get too hot and it also doesn't get too cold.

Michigan is no doubt the most beautiful place to live that has climate changes

but i must say cali for that exact reason

Posted by: whoahitznikki Sep 14 2008, 02:54 PM

CALIFORNIAAA. like, seriously.. i cant imagine living anywhere else.

Posted by: Tungster Sep 14 2008, 04:22 PM

California. It's actually never too hot or too cold. Because of the breeze coming from the coast. I would say the Bay Area is the best weather in all of California. It never gets under 50 degrees, or over 95 degrees. Hence never too hot or too cold.

Posted by: karmakiller Sep 14 2008, 04:31 PM

The closest to California I've been is Oregon, haha. But I might go visit my brother in San Diego, we'll see.

Posted by: paolabear20 Sep 14 2008, 05:52 PM

california beats all of your sucker states!
the only one that comes close in New York.

But other wise CALIFORNIA IS WHERE IT'S AT!

Posted by: technicolour Sep 14 2008, 11:11 PM

But one day California will separate from the USofA and go floating in the ocean. In Texas, of course, we know that this will never happen because Oklahoma sucks.

:D

I like Texas. Sure it's hot, but still. It's pretty cool.

I haven't lived in any other states to judge them but..
I think California is the best.
Great weather
Famous people
Good schools/College system/UC Berkeley/Stanford
Very diverse
Beaches/mountains/etc
Two of the well known cities in the world- San Francisco and Los Angeles
Big state
A lot of olympians grew up here and/or trained here (I think)
Very high Minimum wage-8 bucks (But the cost of living is high also)

California is in debt right now.. Enron *ahem* Texas. hahaha stubborn.gif

I live in NM, which is by far not the best state. I dont know much else cause I havent traveled much. But NM is beautiful, I think everyone should get a chance to see it.

Michigan is prettty awesome, if it wasn't for our crappy economy it would be perfect.

Posted by: RoyalSwagger Jun 11 2009, 03:08 PM

CA is great for it weather blah blah so many other places are too! I live in CA and Im lucky to have everything I want and need... but people come here for opportunity and job placement or to make it in the industry... CA is supposed to be the "golden state" yet housing is ridiculous compared to other states... its so HIGH here! and when the economy fails we get hit the hardest! Our prices are marked up twice as much compared to any where else... CA is in a HUGE debt and always will be. We have the highest rate of homes in foreclosure.

If you want to raise a family you should know: we have the WORST education system in the US. even our colleges are looked at as jokes by other state colleges. Our city's have such high crime rates. WE have so many damn immigrants (nothing against immigrants)... I think it's great if you come here to our country to start a new life (legally). I can go on all day... yes we have a great minimum wage... if you want to live pay check to paycheck!!!

I love ca and Im happy with the life I have... I just want people to be aware it isn't some fantasy state...

I think any other state is great to live in... in suburban area and work in the city... hmmmmm

Texas, because you can get the most house for your money, and the it is one of the only places that the economy has barely effected it, it can support itself so well that it has thought about becoming a seperate country. And guys, put balls on the back of their trucks. lol

mellow.gif explain?

Posted by: jcp Jun 20 2009, 05:25 PM

Which part?

edit: ill explain them both.

I am not sure why, but the best part of texas in my opinion is Dallas, and we live 40 minutes away from dallas, and 20 from southlake where my parents jobs are. We have the grapevine like, and it is a great place to live, and the houses have the lowest dollar per square foot rate then anywhere else. That is a good thing.

And we are currently moving, an the price of our house barely moved at all during the economy crisis. It didnt appreciate but it didnt go down, and no other houses near us have either.

Recently the governor or soemthign of texas announce that texas was thinking about secceding from the us. Everyone knows we wont but we just wanted to show off and say that we could if we wanted to to.

^truck balls. Only texans use them. biggrin.gif
