Access to Social Networking in High School is Justified. Agree or Disagree?
disagree. there is no point to me. they're at school to be in class learning shit. isn't that what we are paying taxes for surely they can go a whole 7 hours without checking their social networking site.
I agree with JC. While it can be frustrating for the student, there is absolutely no reason for a student to have to go on during school time. Students should spend their time on the school computers doing more productive things.
there really isn't a bright road ahead if schools allow social networking at schools. besides, most people with common sense would go on their phones to blog/status update/upload pics/ or whatever related to social networking
i mean it's more easier to use your phone as a source of social networking compared to going through hundreds of proxies just to make it show.
Just to spice things up a bit, what about the educataional gains that can be made through social networking? For example, in my spanish class, the teacher created a project where students had to create a myspace page completely in spanish. How else would the project have been done without access to the social network?
Correct me if I'm wrong (I've never created a MySpace page before), but that just involves writing out your personal information, right? That Spanish teacher could have simply assigned a form for each student to fill out, where students state their hobbies, interests, mood, relationship status, etc. Or if it's blog entries the teacher wants his/her students to write, ask them to write a normal journal entry!
Sure this MySpace assignment may be a little bit more interesting for the students than the conventional Spanish homework because omgz it requires the use of the internet!, but I'm sure teachers can find other ways to make their assignments more fun and exciting without the use of these social networking websites. =\
It could always be a home project too
Students can live without a facebook and all that for 6 hours
OH here's a funny thing.
My teacher was saying how Michigan is requiring students to make their own blog. Like part of the curriculum. She was also saying how there would be a "School facebook" where we would make separate facebook accounts, apart from our main social ones, and have it be strictly for school.
Just thought id bring that up. Thought it was interesting. If i can find a article i will post it.
Hm, I'd probably lean more on the disagree side. I mean, school is for learning and gaining knowledge and having a better education; not to read what your friends ate or where they're about to go or how bored they are sitting next to you. I guess I could agree if social networking had relevant information of what you're learning in class, but eh, doesn't really seem that way.
The way I see it is school is for education, and social networking is for socializing on a network.
I Think I'm Pretty much nuetral on this.
I'm a student and i love social networks but there's really no reason for schools to allow access to them.
But then again i know alot of schools that use several social networks for school-wide projects.
So they should really just block them all or allow them all.
It's kinda nazi-ish to pick and choose.
LOL
...
I will never agree that there is any credence to allowing socnet access while in school (particularly high school, college might be iffy if computers in dorm rooms aren't allowed access due to blocks and such).
