lawyer:
was it your intention to get young black people to be violent to police?
tupac: no
lawyer: were you trying to provoke anyone to do anything particular?
tupac: yes
lawyer: tell us what
tupac: think.

do you believe music is responsible for young people's actions? not limited to rap, that's just my example. there's lots of music charged with making kids go nuts, metal, junk school shooting kids listen to, etc. whenever young people do something bad they always turn around and ask what music they were listening to.

Posted by: spambot May 21 2010, 02:26 PM

Very very very little if any. I think it is up to the parents and community to raise kids who are not as impressionable. I think it's bull shit how we use movies/music/video game industries as a scape goats for our f*cked up kids.

A lot of music that sound violent does have some kind of reason/message that a lot of the times only the fans of the music will get since they are the only ones willing to look for it.

BUT THEN YOU GET THAT ONE f*ckING CRAZY ASS GROUP OF KIDS WHO HAVE TO RUIN IT FOR EVERYONE

I think music has a tons of influence on people. Whether a person is good or not I don't think is influenced by music, but the way they behave I think is. For instance, you can have a good and a bad person, and that's who they are. Then branching off of that they might be mild mannered, aggressive, subversive, deceptive, etc. The same could be said for a good person. For instance, deceptive bad person might be sneaky with their crimes, a deceptive good person might try to help but can only do it by being sneaky about it.

Put music into the equation and I think it alters the current states of people. If you're a good person and you're listening to hard rock and stuff that sounds violent, I don't think that will turn a good person violent, but it might make them more aggressive in what they do. They might speed a bit more, might rush to get things done, but that doesn't make them bad.

I listen to a lot of trancey stuff, and it tends to have a calming effect. Sometimes when I'm feeling 'manly' I'll listen to some harder stuff, some rock, some 'get you pumped up and punch babies' type of music. I think that's generally the influence music has on people.

In some cases, I think music can change who a person is. There have been stories of "music saving my life." Well I don't think that's how it is in most cases, maybe just the extremities. I will use myself as an example for this, go me! Anyway, since I started listening to trancey stuff, it's had a calming effect on me. I've had a lot less stress lately because a lot of stuff I listen to, well it just relaxes me and makes me feel less worried about a lot of things. I manage to put things into perspective, figure out what I need to do, and get started. Anyway, it could be part of maturing, might not. I've met a lot of [now] close friends because of this music I started listening to. They've had a pretty decent influence on me too, and it's indirectly influenced by the music I chose to listen to.

There's no doubt music can change a person/mood slightly. But can music alone drive someone to be a ruthless killer?

Posted by: serotonin May 21 2010, 03:06 PM

JC asked "do you believe music is responsible for young people's actions?"

I didn't say it could turn someone into a ruthless killer. I think if someone's already a killer, the music can make them ruthless. Music may have that influence over someone that already had that in them, but it won't turn someone good bad (so says me). That being said, in no way or form is the action the fault of the musician.

"there's lots of music charged with making kids go nuts, metal, junk school shooting"

That's what I was concentrating on for the most part.

Posted by: brooklyneast05 May 21 2010, 03:25 PM

i think it can influence people but i don't think it can turn good into bad either. i grew up listening to rap (not that all rap is violent, cause it certainly isn't). i'm not a crazy person who goes out at night to shoot cops. the cops would like to think this is the case maybe, but the reality is i don't need tupac to inform me that there are crooked cops. i don't think anyone does, especially depending on the environment you grew up. tupac acknowledging that there is crooked cops isn't gonna make people go shoot them imo.

it would be f*cked up if artists couldn't acknowledge the shit in the world that already exists. they didn't make this stuff up. guns, crime, messed up cops, bad situations, drugs, inequality, all that stuff existed first before anyone could acknowledge it in a song.

Posted by: serotonin May 21 2010, 03:27 PM

I don't think Tupac was trying to inform people of crooked cops, rather trying to get people to fight the issue. By fight the issue, I'm pretty sure he didn't mean to go shoot them, rather fight it civilly and not with violence.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people didn't know (or at least refused to believe) that there are cops who abuse their authority.

Posted by: brooklyneast05 May 21 2010, 03:40 PM

how can people be this dense? these people must live super sheltered lives. it seems like there is always stories now where cops put a few rounds in an unarmed person or taser them to death when it doesn't appear that anyone's life was actually in danger.

i probably go with the refuse to believe.

I think people think that, while it used to happen, it doesn't anymore and that when rappers or who ever talk about their experiences people think they are exaggerating just because something like that,to them, is really unheard of.

People who do innocently believe that all cops are good most likely did live a sheltered life though.

well i mean sean bell was only a few years ago

QUOTE
The Sean Bell shooting incident took place in the New York City borough of Queens on November 25, 2006, in which one Latino and two African-American men were shot a total of fifty times by a team of both plainclothes and undercover NYPD officers, killing one of the men, Sean Bell, on the morning after his bachelor party, and severely wounding two of his friends.

50!!!

more extreme case, but some cops needlessly harass people allllllllll the time.

Nothing like being shot and shit but the cops in Sugar Land are terrible. The city was named the safest in the nation, so the cops don't have much to do. A lot of people in this city are fairly well off and through that a lot of kids drive a lot of nice cars. A lot of these cops live 20 miles away in slummy neighborhoods and you would be dense to think they don't hold grudges against the people of Sugar Land. I much prefer Houston police.

Well yes, definitely music DOES have an influence on people depending on her personality, likes, dislikes, characer, etc. Everyone likes different and similar kinds of music. There are tons of varieites! Can't stop. Well music has effect on people and people may have the power to simply enjoy the music. There's a difference between "music's influence on people" AND "people's music influence on the industry". The person oneself has responsiblities to take care of their music career. In other words, music is a good thing. People just choose bad decsions. YOU HAVE THE CHOICE TO CHANGE YOUR DECISON.

And another thing, don't blame music for people's bad habits or behavior. Music is not a target for people's bad acts. It's the people themselves that makes the [good or bad] choice, not the music. Music can't make choice. It's sounds that people just enjoy. LOVE MUSIC FOREVER!

ZING

Influential, probable. Responsible, no.

I don't like the idea of profiling based on musical taste. In my experience, the two don't typically add up. Same goes for movies. Some of the nicest people I know are gore whores and love thrash metal. Some of the meanest people I know love chick flicks and Disney music. You are what you are.

i think it also has to do with how they were raised and their surroundings as a young kid, because younger people are quite impressionable and vulnerable. but to answer your question about music? to the impressionable ones, yes. i think the type of music can influence a lot, from what i witnessed with myself (when i was younger) and others.

anyway, appreciate you sharing that vid, never seen it before. glad i clicked this topic.

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

I think it's a cop out to say that kids do stupid shit because of the music they listen to. I think in certain environments that music can be escape of the reality that some people have to live everyday, but I think that if someone does commit an act of violence against someone else that the first thing that person says motivated them to do it isn't going to be music.

i think many listeners look up to their role models who are musicians. i think music somewhat influences people to do things. like many rappers rap about having sex w/ girls and money. many rock/screamo singers sing about drugs and stuff. i think it does influences people a bit, but those people have a choice on to decide whats right for them. many acoustic/indie singers sing about love and breakups which do have an affect on people have some kinda love like the singers talk about.

whoa whoa whoa, ive never heard anyone rap about having sex with money
