1)First you must open up the image you want to use.You must almost have 2 premade patterns.Im going to use this one of the lovely Marilyn Monroe-->

2)Create a new layer.Go to edit>>fill>>use:pattern.Choose one of your patterns and click "ok." You should now have something like this-->

3)Now go to your layer pallette on the bottom right and click the add layer mask button-->

4)Press D and X at the same time to reset your foreground and background colors to white and black.Now, using your liner gradient tool

drag a line from the bottom left corner to the top right corner of your image.It should now look something like this-->

5)Then Create another new layer and fill it with a different pattern.-->

6)Now repeat steps 3 and 4 only this time, drag your gradient line in the opposite direction (top right to bottom left)This is what you should have--->

7)Play with the opacity in your pattern layers.

I lowered my first pattern to 50% and my second to 20% and heres what i got--->

hey, to the person below me...an easy, quick way to outline font is Stroke. I'm going to try and explain this...on your font layer...select your font using the Magic Selection Tool. select until all is included (pressing Shift when you click a new section will keep it together). Then go to Edit>Stroke (Outline). A new window will open w/ all the settings for colour and thickness. I hope this helps you.
