So, have you ever attempted to select an object away from it's background; but have been lost in all the confusion?
There are many different ways to do so but I will list only the basic ones.
Listed below:

Lasso Tool
Marquee Tool
Quick Mask Mode

1.Lasso Tool- When you select the laso tool, choose your desired kind(polygonal, magnetic, free-form). Then just start by clicking at the start of your object, and clicking around to insure the object's edges.
2.Marquee Tool- You can choose to use whichever you would like(rectangular, elliptical, etc.) Then you can just click and drag to make your selection.
3.Quick Mask Mode- Okay, this is my favorite! Select the brush tool, choose an appropriate size. The hit "d" on your keyboard for the default colors. It should have black as foreground and white as background. Now, hit "q" on your keyboard to enter quick mask mode, start brushing over your object(it's supposed to look red!) Use black to select and use white to erase your mistakes. When you're done hit "q" again to exit quick mask mode. Then go to Selection>>Inverse. And it is the most effective way to successfully select an object.
Congratulations! You have selected your object.
