Several of you have asked me how I did the torn edge effect from my Grungy Pixel Effect tutorial. You may also recognize it from my skin: Kill Our Kittens Plz. So here I will show you how it's done.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

1) We're going to use the following image of Alicia Keys, recycled from my Grungy Pixel Effect tutorial. Right click on the image and choose "Copy".

2) Open up Photoshop and go to: File >> New. The settings should be preset to the dimensions of the image you just copied. To be sure, check to make sure your settings are as follows:
(Thumb'd)

3) Create a new layer: Layer >> New >> Layer. Hit OK. Press CTRL + V or Edit >> Paste to paste our image into the document.
(Thumb'd)

4) Add a 1 pixel border: Layer >> Layer Style >> Stroke. Copy the settings shown below:
(Thumb'd)

5) Now select the lasso tool. Turn off Anti-aliasing and drag the lasso around the areas you want the torn border effect on.

8) Save your image as a .gif: File >> Save For Web. Use the following settings:

This allows for your image background to retain its transparency. Hit Save.

9) Your final product should look similar to the following:

That's all there is to this effect. Try this with your favorite images and get lasso happy if you wish. =]
