I'm coding a Chatroom with PHP, Javascript (jQuery), and Ruby.
While i'm sketching and trying to come up with ideas, I can't seem to figure out anything!.
I'm gonna have a chat with no bots. I'm gonna be running my own botnets, etc (Yes i'm a hacker, well a low-skilled one anyways) just to make sure NO bots can get in, and make strict policy's for the damn pervs. I'm planning this Chat room to be more, add on and make it expand. It's 2010 already! let's do something new.
With a slick UI and more stuff. So any ideas?

I wanna create it for experience & those damn chats are full of spam or look ugly as hell.

neither if you know what you're doing. all you have to do hit all the incoming connections with a CTCP VERSION, if they send the wrong reply, G:line them. as for ugly, if you're making the java client yourself it should turn out fine.

You say you're a hacker. Are you trying to hack into the cB chat system to change it?

You know,
IRC can be pretty.
It's just a simple text protocol, so you can make it look like anything you want.

Ever heard of IRC Botnets?
Yeah, but IRC has ways to control that, if a server admin wishes to do so.
The question is, what do you plan to do to prevent that sort of abuse on your chat protocol?

no, but I've heard of IRC bots. I run a few myself, but they generally don't cause any problems. I assume you actually plan on maintaining this, and not pulling a jusun and leaving it to rot, so you can just gline the bots that don't do so well.
fyi, IRC is less likely to have spam than your regular flash/java/php/whatever chat room.
edit:
the point is, why create your own chat protocol when there is already a widely accepted protocol in place?

i once used a flash client, java server chat room, it looks pretty and it's fast. You don't need to download any software or install any addons.
I think the chat room should allow one-to-one chat at least.

I was thinking of having pm's in the middle of the chat, but then if there was a lot of people talking in the chat then they could miss the pm. I just think pop up pm's are annoying.

are you gonna have those annoying action code things? like
"Beenly rolled the two dices. The result was 2 and 6."

No! I might have other types of scripts to have something emphasized or bolded. example, in the chat *this is bold* the * would make it bold. _ this is underline _ would make something underlined. I been playing around with that.
