Pros:
They can't see anything you don't want "them" too.
Cons:
Stifles creativity and "freedom" of speech (not all that free anymore)

Your Ideas?

Ummm, if I was a parent I would want this. And they are parents, they have to right to watch there kids and see what they are like online rather then off. And I believe in internet censorship. But I just use, Pro Con Latte. I only use the word filter though. I dont want to block any pages.

i think [personally] its cutting people off from the real world.
no opinion on parental control.

Censorship is just dumb and should be reserved for banana republic governments. Once you cut off information [Audial, Visual, Or Textual] you limit the person's capacity to learn new information [i.e. a new language, memorize a line of a poem, ect.]

Parental Control would me much easier if the kids knew why, it was bad and [hopefully] they won't do it often.

I believe that censorship in any form is wrong.

Younger generations these days are actually becoming more smart and social. If I was a parent,

1. No computer in their bedroom.
2. They must tell me when they want to use the computer, and I monitor them from time to time.
3. When they're done, I just check their history ( if they do delete it, I'm sure there are ways of viewing it back)

I' don't really mind if it's social networking, but if it's Porn then no. My kids could come to me about Sex education or anything they need to know.

I thought you were only talking about adult content and inappropriate words. Why would you sensor wikipedia? I hope my kids dont know how to clear history. But I would want them to have their own computers.

I don't think that ISPs should have the right to censor what their customers look at or download, but I do that it's up to the parent if he or she wants to censor their child. Parents censor what their children listen to, see, and read because they don't think their child can handle it or should even see it, period... so telling the child what's censored and why would probably be something the parents who censor stuff wouldn't want their kids to know about either. They'd censor them from the reasoning behind why they're censored, haha.

So far I've never heard a good enough reason to justify kids seeing pornography, graphic images or graphic language (c'mon, what kid needs to read neo-nazi webpages?). When they are older they can make their own decisions, but if a child is looking at something or downloading something illegal it's the parent who gets in trouble... so even if the parent doesn't have an issue with their kid accessing it they still have a way to cover themselves.

OMG YOU'RE HORRIBLE! Strict Asian parent D:

My kids can use the internet as much as they want as long as it's not interfering with school.. and as long as they're not doing anything illegal (.... they can look at porn as long as they don't distribute it).

Like all things kids do, they will eventually tire of it and leave it for something else.

I can understand a little censorship (no porn, nothing illegal, etc.), but most parents go overboard. My best friend had her laptop taken away for five months because her mom got into her email and saw some "inappropriate" emails between her and my other friend. She even went as far as emailing the other friend. It's insane.

Kids find a way to do things behind their backs anyway. I don't see how that makes them better, safer people. I think it's stupid that parents have so little trust in their children. I never feel the need to do anything illegal or harmful, and I think it's because I don't have that extra thrill of doing it on the sneak.
FizzyMilk
It's one thing to censor but I have had many friends that have their parents looking over their shoulders every time they get online.
Just block the porn and walk away. :)

Adults should remember what it was like being a child..mom says no...you do it anyway..at least..that's what most kids would do.

Kids need Some type of privacy. A parent standing over their shoulder watching every thing that they do on the internet is sending a message to that kid saying "my parents don' trust me."

and with porn, most kids are naturally curious. I would think that a kid would look porn up because his/her parents never talked to them about sex and they learned from a friend instead.

Anyways, my point it, censorship to a point is okay..but too much is not okay.

and what's next to censor?
Are parents going to go to school with their kids and make sure they behave there too?
emberfly
I don't understand what's so bad about porn.............

I turned out just fine. devil.gif

government shouldn't censor anything, ever. If parents don't want their kids looking at something, they should take time out of their day to put blocks on your computer (or TV), if they're not technologically advanced enough to do so, they can google how.
brooklyneast05
parents go overboard. but that being said it's almost always a computer the parents bought, internet they pay for, in the house they own, so...
Annabean
Parents do go overboard. I hate when my mom
goes through my stuff and then
accuses me of things when she only seen like a
portion of sometihng and assumed it meant
something else.

I hate it. But, i must say
Sometimes parental control is needed.
I mean i got into a lot of stuff because
of over exposure. My friends and some media
used to influence me. Stupid, i know, but true.

Kids must be protected from certain things. They can
experience the real world when they hit the teen years.
There's not too much parents can do about it then. When
there's a will, there's a way. biggrin.gif

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin

I think that sums up my whole argument. Parents should control their kids. Not the government.
dustbunny
yes. my children can wait until middle school or older to know what buttsex is.

I don't think the majority of what parents wish to censor will interfere with creativity, it's usually just along the lines of what they regard as appropriate or not for their children's age. This is discounting the overprotective and unrealistic parents who wish to conceal their children from the rest of the world until they grow to be 50.

I just don't think 2 or 3 fewer years of AIM and Xanga would have been detrimental to my life growing up. All it really did anyways was help decrease my productivity and make me more prone to procrastination.
