Hello All, Thanks for reading this.
I've been a visitor of CreateBlog for almost a year now, {And I will say, exellent myspace layouts :)} and I was thinking, I cannot make proper Myspace, Blog, ect. Layouts..BUT I am wonderfully good at NEOPET layouts..So, would it be possible if I made those kind of layouts? If not, I'll just go back to being a visitor :) whistling.gif

Welcome to cB! My name is Shelby.
You know, thats actually a very good idea. I don't use neopets anymore, but I can make layouts. You should suggest it to a Mod!

I think this is a great IDEA... getting the Neopets community to come to CB. :]
slammin shelby
I used to <3 Neopets. :D

Well, I'm not really into Neopets or anything, but I don't think that having a Neopets layout section is a bad idea. I'm always looking for new ways to bring new members to this site. There are millions of users on Neopets, and having a Neopets layout section would open the door to hoards of new people joining the site.

I got this idea here:

Are there enough 13+ members on Neopets??

Yes, there are. Check out these statistics:

QUOTE
Growth Rate
Neopets' membership has grown at an astounding rate - from approximately 90,000 in April 2000 to more than 30 million in June 2005. Approximately thirty-nine percent of Neopets' members are age twelve and under; forty percent are between the ages of thirteen and seventeen, and twenty-one percent are age eighteen and older. Significantly, Neopets' explosive growth rate has been "viral" - meaning that the impetus for this dynamic growth has been word-of-mouth from user to user, not commercial advertising.

Memberships:
  • 30 million
Demographics:
  • Under 13 years old - 39%
  • 13-17 years old - 40%
  • 18 and older - 21%
  • Female: 60%
  • Male: 40%

60% of Neopet's 1,000,000+ members are over 13 years of age. Please stop shilling BS and start stating facts. Yes, Neopets does allow younger children to join the site, but the majority of those members are 13+. Also, I doubt the majority of members who are younger than 13 years of age will be surfing the web for information regarding HTML for their Neopets layouts.

Are they (members 13+) active?

QUOTE

The average user spends 5 hours and 24 minutes per month. It seems as if members on the site are pretty active. I see your point, and I'm going through the youth studies that Neopets has offered it's members... hopefully they will provided some data as to what demo graphics took the study. At the moment I have come up with this:

In 2002 80% of the people who participated in the survey were 18 years old and under (roughly 12,000).
QUOTE
15,902 US resident NeoPets members (12,512 aged 18 or under) provided data across the four survey instruments used in this report.

This means that about 3000 of them were over 18 years of age. These people are all active users (active enough to take the youth survey). With such a large number of responses the margin of error is very low. This is a fairly accurate representation of what the demographic for the active user over age of 18 would be.

This also corresponds with the percentage of users over 18 being 21% (2006). Yes, I know that this was in 2004, but Neopets has only grown since then. The demographic probably hasn't changed. I can only imagine that the active members who are 13+ would still hold about 60% of the websites active population.

That's about 18,000,000 people... even if you cut that by 75% to get a guesstimate of how many active members their are it's still 4,500,000 people. There aren't many Neopets layout sites, and I think that it would boost traffic to the site like crazy.
multifaceted
Actually I think it is a good idea as well. There are many users on Neopets who area always looking for layouts to set up their user look up page. Even though Neopets is not a blog, it will bring a lot more people to here.

That, and the age thing are my biggest worries. I've seen Neopets profiles with coding, but I've never seen anything like a template or a possible tutorial on how to code such a thing.

Other than that, it seems like a great idea. :]

Eh well the neopet layouts, its not hard to code at all, its really basic..

Although a lot of them look really crappy from what I've just seen pinch.gif

Yea I have to admit I do like neopets, I always go on there and try to get a poogle but I'm furious because I can't ever get one and then I quit for a while. laugh.gif

I never really found why their layouts where ever really important though..
iDecay
I never really saw why they were so important, either.. mellow.gif I'm not for it. They're so easy to make, I don't see a big need in them. Basically anyone can acquire a stylesheet and enter in a couple of hex codes. And the whole idea of having little kids (even though some people may consider me one) here doesen't really appeal to me..
Intercourse.
^exactly, and if you guys look at the code above, I'm pretty positive people can see its not that hard.

I mean I'm sure theres stylesheets on the internet that we can give links too and more than likely they can google for one and find it..

I think this is the first or maybe second time I've ever heard anything about neopets so I don't find it to be to big of thing.

Ziggy - How old are you exactly? Welcome to createblog, please remember to read over the community guidlines and not to double post wink.gif theres a edit button on each of your posts if you would like to add anything..

Also you've only been on neopets for a month? Thats odd, since a lot of people after a couple of months lose a lot of interest in neopets..from what I've seen

I agree with this possibly being too directed towards children of younger age than you would usually find here in createBlog.

The age of people around here is usually 13+, and "PG-13" content would definitely be expected here. Neopets, I believe, attracts more people in the 12 and under age range.

Attracting people at the age of 12 and under to createBlog isn't really a good idea, especially when it says "you must be 13 or older" right in the registration form.

Actually,
You'd be surprised at how many people are there that are older than 13, and 12.
In the "Roleplay" Section of Neopets, there's alot of Mature people, raging from ages 13-19.

I Shot JFK
To be honest, while this may increase traffic, I'm not entirely sure what it will do for CB's reputation as a design site, given that the layouts are so basic... And again, the age range of the members who may be attracted to the site would be a concern, although I WOULD point out that if people sign the thing saying that they are 13, then it ceases to be Cb's responsibility.

And if it would bring in new members, then why not. I don't object to the idea in principle, I just don't really think that the amount of hassle which would be caused would really be balanced by the benefits. On balance, I would abstain from a vote, but those are my two-cents
Gypsy Eyes
I don't think it should be offered, as James said it would bring down CB's reputation as a design site.

Besides if we did neopets then we would have to go GJ and all of the other sites that have been proposed. It's not worth the hassle.

Alright, I know that the majority of the people on this site are 13+, but there are definitely people who lie.

By the way, you're all wrong about the average age of people on the neopets website:

Well, I guess I completely overlooked that fact. Just can't judge a book by its cover, eh.

Besides the age then, the layout designs for Neopets appear very simple (or maybe I'm overlooking that too wink.gif). Just designs I wouldn't usually see featured on createBlog. Perhaps a thread describing how to go about making a Neopets layout, but a whole gallery of layouts, not really; but maybe that's just me.

Though, I can see how Neopets could bring plenty of traffic here.

May be simple, but just like myspace... can become extremely complicated. Yes I'm sure that many of the layouts you have seen may be sub par, but you also have to take into consideration that 30,000,000+ members belong to the site. Each one of those members has their own layout that. Most of those members don't care enough to actually make a complicated layout. Maybe, the members that actually do care will join CB. There has to be at least a couple million of them.

Well, I understand that the facts support you're statement that it's not such a risk with the age thing, but do those stats take into account the age of the active members? I know that the highest percentage is the 13-17 block, but that may be just a result of members playing it when they were younger and abandoning it later on.

Well Josh wanted me to post the types of layouts you can make that I suppose look like divs.

These are the best ones I found, the others are really crappy so if you don't know what your doing its not going to look right, I've coded with neopets before when I was like 12 and played it constantly. Its not that hard I tell you and if we do get this idea I'll make a tutorial and what ever needs to be done..

- make it cute

- could look a ton better with better graphics but the coding is simple for this one, its on my own thing.

Neopet has updated their coding and stuff so you can't use some style tags and other things, but the use of regular divs is really simple to get around the problem

I don't think that the copyright laws would be violated. Neopets.com isn't going press charges on a website that encourages people to use their website. There are plenty of Neopets layout websites on the web containing hoards of copyrighted character usage within them.

I emailed the neopets legal department, and they should be getting back to me soon.

Right, and same thing with the users browsing Myspace.com and Xanga. Seriously, there are at least a million little kids browsing both of those sires. There is no way to prove the quality of the users that will join the site. I think that the current CB environment (which, in my opinion, isn't very open minded) will definitely filter out the "quality" members, whatever your definition of "quality" may be.

We would also be using neopets layouts to encourage people to visit Createblog.com, and here's where the problem could be seen. It'd be interesting to check that with the Admin team, if anything just because intellectual property laws can be tricky like that.

My other concern is Createblog being swallowed by a landslide of the average unoriginal internet thinking present in all of the huge internet communities out there, in all of their forms.
