If you want to use this, you might want to get gaim now. Click the gaim man icon in my sig.
kryogenix
I guess they found out it's been leaked. I can't log on now. Oh well. Tommorow it's going to be officially announced.
coconutter
how do you get it?
sadolakced acid
ahh well no point in trying with trillian now.

but trillian's supposed to work, and that's good.
uLoVeMikeRoch
Hmm, so this is a new type of chatting network/system, nice... but I think most people who are going to use this are engadget/slashdot/hackaday or anyone else interested in stuff like that. Like me

Not free trillian, trillian pro only.

I'd get it...except I don't have pro...oh well. Wonder how good the sound quality is...

None of my contacts have microphones, so it'd be pretty useless for me.
kryogenix
I already made a topic on this.

[edit]

Topics Merged.

I strongly reccomend gaim over trillian. And I don't want any piracy going on, ok?
sadolakced acid
what's be benifits of gaim over trillian?

besides jabber
DaTru KataLYST
..strange..my friend asked me for my email, and then sent me the link to dl gtalk. And then I dont need trillian/gaim like you all suggest?? Why can I login w/o using gaim/trillian and you all have to??

Wha?!

Audio ain't so great w/ Gtalk..I like MSN better.

Auto-idler. :o It also loads faster, and there are colors in the chatrooms that don't blind you like on AIM. That's why I use GAIM instead of Trillian now.. but direct-connect on GAIM sucks.

It's just more convenient to have all the messengers in one, which is what GAIM and Trillian are - mutli-messengers.
sadolakced acid
ahh...

can gaim merge contacts?

as in... instead of having "alienshards" twice (once for each aim acount), it has it only once?

Er... I think so.. not entirely sure, though.
mzislandpinay
does gaim work for windows xp?
sadolakced acid
yes it does

I got Gtalk, it all seems pointless if you dont know anyone with gmail. Which I dont. So I guess it IS pointless. Doesnt have alot of functions as far as I can see.

Anyone else?

Yeah, I agree. I also don't have a mic so I can't do the voice talk (which is also available on other messanging programs too).

I like it because I don't need Teampspeak now. Meaning one less program running.

Yeah, see for me its just AIM, Mozilla, and occasionally Musicmatch going, and thats it. I dont really need anything combining programs or anything.

And due to my lack of gmail contacts, or anyone wholl remotely want to use gtalk, I find it useless to me. Heh.
queen
it's cute... i like how it minimizes and how it's so simple and clean... i'll wait until they've finished it... aim's still better for now cause i can paste images.
artislife90
pointless. I have Ichat.

It's actually a really interesting idea. The Jabber IM protocol is open, and Google encourages the connection of clients other than their own (unlike *cough* AOL *cough* and *cough* Microsoft *cough*). I'm interested in seeing with Google Talk goes...if anyone has the power to take on AOL Instant Messenger, it's Google.

Funny thing is, Microsoft was complaining how AOL had a closed network, until they released MSN messenger and had a closed network themselves.
Libertie
I downladed Google Talk.. I just don't have many friends that use gmail. Plus I kinda stopped using any IM client a few months ago.

As for the client itself.. It's simple, but a little too simple for me, I think.

You can use any Jabber-compatible client with Google Talk (which includes gaim).
Libertie
Yeah.. I knew about that, but I don't anything like that. I use Trillian, but I didn't really like Trillian Pro 3 so I didn't keep it for long ($25 well spent). *shrug* I guess I don't care for it because I don't IM much anymore.
mipadi
Google's planning to standardize multimedia IM'ing.

Go Google. And kudos for supporting an open IM protocol. _smile.gif

So, they are trying to combine all the protocols, so Aim users can communicate with MSN users and etc? I didn't get the Article that much.

But I know one thing for sure.

They hired Sean Egan!!
WHOngos144
I don't know anyone that uses GoogleTalk.

Not exactly. Google did acquire stock in AOL, and there is talk of allowing AIM users to communicate with Jabber users and vice-versa--but that wouldn't include MSN. The content of the article, however, is about Google and the Jabber Software Foundation's attempts to release an open standard for multimedia IM'ing, meaning any software could include functionality that would make it compatible with that standard.

(Edit)
Actually, another article details the AOL-Google-MSN "alliance":

QUOTE
Microsoft and AOL end partnership discussions

Microsoft and AOL have ended partnership discussions involving compatible messengers (AIM, MSN Messenger) and removing the Google search engine from the AOL site and replacing it with Microsoft's MSN Search. It is expected that a Google-AOL partnership will be announced.

Here's a good article on Google Talk, Jabber, XMPP, and the adoption of any of those three things.
