Having been born in England and sharing Korean, Chinese, Japanese and French nationalities.
Recently I figured that I can't stand Americanised anime anymore, or let's call it "dubbed". In fact I couldn't stand it when Dragonball Z first started on Cartoon Network, and the immense theme song "Chala head chala" which lived in every child's heart in Asia became, "Dragon....Dragon..Rock the Dragon...Dragonball z...dewdewdewdew(annoying guitaring)". The companies that dub the animes normally have poor transalations as well, but worst of all, are the names. Initial D's Takumi became Tak and Itsuki became Iggy!!!!!! Although somehow I do realise they are starting to get slightly better, eg Witch Hunter Robin, if they'd left out the theme song, I'd hate dubbed anime forever. Don't you feel though that, these dubbing companies are ruining the impact and potential the anime has on a cultured civilisation?
Anyone feel the same?

Well my obsession for Sailor Moon has been going on for many years. Most of the episodes for that series I've watched it in Cantonese. Well, now that I've heard it over and over again I actually think it sounds better that way. But for other Anime, I guess it would sound better in Japanese.

If you actually take time to search for good anime... Then, dubs are great. The only things I don't like is ho they simplify all the... How do I put this? Hm... Well, basically they simplify the Japanese culture, to a point. As in, the levels of politeness are not the same and a lot of the honor stuff and inside jokes get cut. It annoys me to no end, but often... I forgive them, because some of the lines are often a lot funnier in English! Actually, I usually watch anime in Japanese out of the fact that that's mostly what we have and sometimes I understand it better than if it's in English. -shrug- English is a weird language.
But mostly, I like dubbed anime simply because I don't have to really listen to the words that the people are saying to dechiper it (no subtitles). I just listen. I suppose subbed anime might be better tho...

i hate how they change the names. and the songs. and sometimes the voices. but fma and inuyasha's dubs are ok.

Some characters' voices shouldn't be changed, IMO. Thats why I hate dubbing.
Naruto's going to sound extremely stupid. I'm gonna cry when I see it air on CN.

dubbed anime usually isn't good. the original with subs r better. a lot of the times the voices don't match at all. i agree with Solipsist. naruto is going to sound really gay. lol. i mean, the guy who plays vash is going to b naruto i think. and the guy who plays spike from cowboy bebop is going to b kakashi. >< if im correct, then thats going to sound really wrong. but when i don't feel like reading subs, i'll listen to the dubbed version.

I LOVE watching anime in Japanese. It's wayyyy better. Watching Sailormoon here in Canada kinda sucks sometimes because it's edited and dubbed and it's just sooo freakin' cheesy now. Cardcaptors isn't too bad but still ... I watched the second movie in Japanese and it was so much better. Kero is actually a lot funnier in Japanese ahah

Well I watch it in Japanese with the English subtitles. Just as long as I hear the Japanese even though it has subtitles it's okay

ya i did that too.. it didnt seem the same in another language. In my opinion cardcaptor sakura in cantonese makes her sound reallly squeaky so I kinda like the english americanized one.

I took japanese so I learned to watch anime in its original japanese because my teacher wouldnt play the subtitles for us. That way we would learn and all that jazz anyway, now I buy it in its original japanese with subtitles...Even tho I wish I knew enough to not have to. Dubbed it bad, except everyonce in a while, they will americanise one, and the scoring is really really good. Like Mononoke Hime, the new version has better music, but its still not the same as the original. Yeah.

Ahahahaha! I started out with everything in Cantonese and I thought it was good! I also thought it would be good as that, but yeah....I like the Japanese version better.
They should just sub the anime for America. Then, it'll be better because you're learning another language and you're reading. Multi-tasking is fun!

i HATE dubbing. gosh. they freakin kill the anime. i mean its so awesome in the subbed format then they have to ruin the voices and make the anime seem so cool to little kids.
and btw, if you are too lazy to read subtitles, you are not an anime fan.

When watching anime, I always wish I could understand Japanese.
And go to Japan and watch the anime there.
With the original names.
And way better voices.
Dubbing screws all.
Makes me not want to watch that show anymore.
Even if I loved the manga.
One Example.
Tokyo Mew Mew.
KILLS.
