Full Version: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I've searched and searched on this. My friend's laptop had this problem....

"we apologize for the inconvience but windows didnt start sucsesfully" then you can pick between start normally and 3 differnet types of safe modes, now when you click any of them, the same blue screen shows up and it says

a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is your first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hard ware or soft ware manufacturer for any windows update you might need.
If problem continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory option such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode

Now, ive done some research on this UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME thing, and i found specific information here

on the other bugs, it tells you how to fix them but this doesnt have any information, which is where we need help. if anyone has had this problem and/or knows how to fix it please tell us. this happened to one of her other computers but they couldnt fix it then, and the had to get rid of the computer. if it helps, the version of windows she has is Windows xp professional.

Did you do anything recently with the computer, such as install any new software?

she hasnt installed anything, the last thing she did was go to a certain website...i cant remember what it is,but shes been there hundreds of times and nothing happened, and the first computer she wasnt on that site went the computer shut down.

maybe her dad did it and it jus didnt mess up til now

I saw your post and immediatly registered. i've had this problem with my xp home. What i did to not loose any data was call the company of your computer (Dell, HP, ETC...) if its still under warranty then they will send you a floppy disk that says something like "Unamoutable boot data." just pop that sucker in, follow the instructions and it will be all set. For future refrence: always turn off your computer the safe way! that means go to the start menu and turn it off, don't just hold downt he power button or unplug it! that's what causes the error. If it's not under warranty then just caugh up the dough or if ur xp home is built in (Meaning it came with ur computer originally) try pressing F10 repeatedly at the start-up and reformat the hard drive. PS: To bad she got rid of the other computer, she threw away a perfectly good computer!

i`ve had that many times...

- boot up the windows xp cd
- when u get to welcome to setup, press r
- type "chkdsk /p" when u get the dos prompt & enter
- when done, type "fixboot" & enter
- type "y" & enter at the prompt
- then type "exit" & enter
... she system should reboot into windows.

that usually works for me.

it didn`t the last time, though, so i had to completely reformat.

Yea I've had the same problem... turned out that my hard drive died.... I lost every thing man cry.gif , all the memories of my ex-girlfriend cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif ..so what I did is reinstall windows.... good thing about dell is that u can find the drivers at dell support if u lost the disc....

my laptop is having that same problem. well it has for like the past month, but i haven't really cared about it. I've mainly ignored it since I kept getting pissed at it, and had taken almost all of my docs off of it a while ago. I got this laptop in march from dell... but I can find nothing on dell's website about this.... google brought me here and to other sites... but i just want the simple fix... i don't have time for the whole schemel... maybe i should take some of the advice and turn it off the right way... just most of the time that doesn't work because i have too many firewalls/av/spyware programs running in the background.

I know right. I called Dell too and they we like laughing at me mad.gif . Man I was so mad. But I got it fixed though. I learned my lesson. whistling.gif lol j/k
