What types of softwares are able to make/create DVD's on the computer, so that it'll be playable on your DVD player as well.

iDVD for Mac OS X is great.
On the Windows side, I think there's something called DVD Creator that is pretty good. I have it at home--I'm not at home right now, but I'll check on the title when I go home for lunch.

No, DVD players generally use MPEG-2 and a variety of audio formats.

Dvd Studio Pro is so awesome. That's what my mom uses to make DVDs in her post production studio, and I use it too. It's a little complicated- but you can figure it out and there is always the manual. A lot of stuff on it is self explanatory though.
It also I think has the ability to convert certain kinds of movie files into mpeg-2...so that it can be burned onto a DVD.

Isn't DVD Studio Pro Mac-only though? I could be wrong, but I think JAMx33 is looking for a Windows program.
