Laptops are pretty difficult to build from scratch, as a lot of laptop parts and designs are highly specialized.

and laptop parts are built per system in some comptuers

http://tigerdirect.com - good quality, cheap price overstock computer parts, and other odds'n'ends. I've bought several parts from there, when I helped a friend build his own [desktop] computer.

Honestly, I've never even seen anyone build a laptop, let alone someone who doesn't even know what to do...

it's not worth it to build your own laptop. i doubt you're going to save any money buy building rather than buying.

and aren't the motherboards custom per setup too?

i think the easiest is just to buy a laptop and mod it...

all you can do is change out the optical drive, put in more memory, and upgrade the hard-drive.

maybe add wireless, or something like that.

not much...

alienwares rock.

Ok your first mistake, A desktop Processor is a no no in a laptop. They will burn the he** out of you, that is a mistake Dell makes. Now they make Intel P4 Mobile Processor that can reach up to 3.6 ghz, but the problem is that they are made to fit one kind of case. Your best bet is to just buy a laptop. I mean grate that you want to try it, but bad is the way its gunna turn out.

I have a Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 laptop with 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz a Intel® Pentium® M Processor 770 (2.13 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB) [Which is supose to be "top of the line, still dont understand the whole Centreno deal] XP PRO, 4years CompleteCare Accidental Damage, 100GB Hard Drive, 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability, 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 6800 Ultra, and well then the price kicks in and I wish I never would have gotten it. The grand total was $4,132. I compared to Alienware and Compaq and a iBook and well it was about $1,000 to $2,000 cheaper. As in like desktops, I could of saved thousands by building one, but its too much of a head ake, if you drop it you have no warranty, if you spill something on it your screwed. If you have a problem you have to find someone that knows that much and has built one to help fix it. Or take it to Geek Squad and pay about as much for a new one so they can drive it to best buy in there little bug.
