Does anybody take music theory for instruments that they plan? For example.. Rudiments, Harmony, History, Counterpoint, Analysis etc;? Maybe its different in other countries {Im from Canada..} but some of these are mandatory for some instrument grade certificates.
Im currently in grade 8 piano and I just passed rudiments II and Im taking harmony 3 & history 3..

Uh, I took piano theory for years, but it wasn't separated into categories like that. For the CM (certificate of merit) test, I got up to level eight (out of ten) and then I quit piano. If I had kept with it, I would've taken level ten (advanced) last year. Too bad I didn't. Eh.

I took music theory, but it wasn't for a specific instrument--it was just general music theory. At my school, so few people took it, that it was an independent study course.

I'm envious. My high school doesn't offer AP music theory. It'll be considerably easier if you have trained perfect pitch. Mine is undeveloped. D:

I took AP Music Theory. The class itself isn't hard, but I hear the AP test is really difficult. I didn't take the AP test.

Since all classes are taught differently by different people, it's inaccurate to really guage APs by the actual class rather than the AP exam.

I had to take music theory for like 6 years, then I stopped since i fulfilled the requirement. Now, I have to take it again since I switched schools.

such a bummer. I am thinking about taking the Music Theory AP (when i reach the appropriate age) , the exam..since well, I have studied it for a huge fraction of my entire liiifeeee.

I took the RCM History 3 exam just recently...care to know how I studied for it?
- My exam was about 2 o clock, which meant I still had to attend 3 classes before that. I skipped those 3 classes and studied like crazy the day of the exam in the cafeteria.
- I only studied/memorized the life and musical style of Bach and Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz during the caf cram session, and to my great surprise (and even greater luck), those were the two that were the essay topics.
- I got 81 in the end, which is above-ish average, all by pure luck.
...and a little procrastination.

Honestly, I never understood the concept of harmony, but I went in and took the exam anyway and passed it with Honours. Basically it's easier because there are so many possible answers and as long as you remember a few basic rules, you can't go wrong.
